Fortress Tatanga is a stronghold constructed by Pionpi and his army on an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean, appearing in the Game Boy comic Team Play. The fortress's design draws inspiration from the Birabuto and Chai Kingdoms, featuring a pyramid as the main building and two traditional Chinese-inspired towers flanking the sides.

HistoryEdit

When Herman Smirch and Tatanga's army fly to where they believe to be China in order to enslave a large population of people, Pionpi orders the construction of Fortress Tatanga before asking Herman where all of the humans are, to which he pretends that the lack of inhabitants is due to there being a monsoon season.

Later, once Fortress Tatanga is finished, Mario flies to the island in his Sky Pop to check out the dark cloud hanging over it. Sensing something is wrong when he heads to the base, Mario is ambushed by Pionpi's forces, who are using real ammunition. The Sky Pop is heavily damaged and Mario crash lands onto the deck of the USS Nimitz, as Pionpi and his minions celebrate his defeat in the fortress.

Later, Mario, having been granted access to the ship's ordinances and heavily armed with M61 Vulcan cannons, various types of missiles, and laser-guided bombs, flies back to Fortress Tatanga again and makes quick work of its defenders. As Pionpi's minions detect one of the F/A-18 Hornets approaching the island, Pionpi orders the gunners to fire on it, giving Mario the opening he needs to land. He then makes his way into the fortress, finding Pionpi to be running it. He then jumps into the command center and grabs him, but the main screen of the command console shows that the F/A-18 has been heavily damaged and is about to crash. Mario flies to the F/A-18 and holds its wing, ensuring a safe landing.

Meanwhile, Fortress Tatanga is in flames, and Pionpi, with Mario having escaped and various aircraft approaching, declares the base as lost. Herman offers to allow it and his minions to escape in his convertible, but Pionpi tells him that they need to activate the base's self-destruct mechanism, explaining that they must not let the base fall into "giant hands." However, he tells Herman that he must leave, as his safety is of great importance. Herman says that he does not want them to be destroyed, calling them his "pals," though Pionpi explains that they will have entered the Game Boy long before the fortress is destroyed, though adds that Herman will have to obtain a new Game Boy, as the current Game Boy will be destroyed in the fortress's explosion. Saluting Pionpi and his army, Herman drives away from the fortress, with it exploding as several fighter jets fly over the island.
