Melon-chan was Bowser's childhood friend and first crush in the Super Mario Bros. 2 manga. She is a kind, cheerful sorceress, wearing a dress and a ribbon in her hair. Dress aside, she is identical to Princess Peach. She appears in the last two chapters of the manga.
2000 years ago, during Bowser's youth, Bowser met Melon-chan, who taught him how to use magic. One day, after being beaten up by some bullies, Melon-chan tended to his injuries, and Bowser vowed to train harder than ever and become the strongest Koopa King in history. To incentivize this, Melon-chan promised to marry Bowser once his task was completed. But time passed, and while Bowser eventually kept his promise, Melon-chan (seemingly) passed away. Though this saddened Bowser, he would find another girl to fight for: Princess Peach, whom he considers Melon-chan's reincarnation due to their resemblance.
Melon-chan is still involved in Bowser's life, watching him from the sky, and though she admires his strength, she is sad in knowing that he had to give up his kindness to become a ruler. To save Bowser from this fate, Melon-chan's spirit asks Mario to use her heart, which she stored in the axe, and to give it to Bowser. With Melon-chan's help, Mario and his team are warped to Bowser's Castle, and while he gets his hopes up in hearing that Melon-chan still loves the kind Bowser he was, he is too far gone and ultimately refuses to be reformed.
As Bowser reveals in the tease for the next series, while he still loves Melon-chan, he intends on remaining the feared and evil Koopa King, hinting that she would have played a role in the short-lived sequel.
