Cannon Ball Z is the secret identity the Mushroom King takes in Super Mario Kart 3 of the Super Mario Kodansha manga to protect his daughter from the perils of the Super Mario Cart Rally. In this role, the king wears a race suit with a helmet that covers his face and a cape. On the helmet it is written "Cannon Ball", while the "Z" is printed on his chest. He is often seen holding a rose and using it as a throwing weapon.

As soon as the King realizes Peach has snuck her way into the race, the King, aided by Toad (later donning the Cannon Boy z costume), enter the race disguised as Mototin and Henshū on a kart that is also disguised depending on which character they are playing.

He first stops Bowser from breaking a pipe that the Mario Team was balancing on by stabbing Bowser's in the hand with the rose. Later, when all the pilots are tricked by Wario to be stranded in the desert, the pilots almost attack Peach to get her water bottle, but Cannon Ball Z reappears, calming everyone down, until Mario and Luigi find an oasis. Lastly, after poisoning Luigi and forcing the Mario Team to go back, Bowser takes the lead, but Cannon Ball Z and Cannon Boy z, dropping their Mototin and Henshū disguises, ram their kart into his, blowing them up. Knocked out by the explosion, the two masked pilots' identities are revealed and Bowser decides to carry his "future fater-in-law" on his back to the finish line while Dr. Mario Nakamatsu (previously captured by the Koopa king) carries Toad.
