Super Mario Galaxy 2 is an enhanced Nintendo Switch port of the Wii game of the same name released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch on October 2, 2025 as part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration.[1] First announced during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, the game can be purchased individually on the Nintendo eShop or together with Super Mario Galaxy in the Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 bundle.[1]

Differences from the Wii version[edit]

Gameplay[edit]

  • An update, when played on the Nintendo Switch 2, allows the game to be played with Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.[13]
  • As with Super Mario Odyssey, the game features an Assist Mode that allows the player to start with six health as if they collected a Life Mushroom, allows them to recover health by remaining stationary, and automatically returns them to solid ground if they fall into the void. Switching between Assist Mode and Normal Mode returns the player to the last checkpoint, resetting collectibles and enemies as if the player had died.[14]
  • A brand new storybook is added that tells the story of how Lubba became a spaceship captain after being separated from her sister Mari.[15]
    • The storybook's first chapter is unlocked after beating a mission in World 4. Each subsequent chapter is then unlocked after beating any missions of World 5, World 6 and World S.[16]
  • The soundtrack can be accessed and listened to from the main menu.[14]
  • amiibo are now supported, and, like in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, scanning them gives the player in-game items. Scanning any Mario or Rosalina amiibo grants a Life Mushroom or 1-Up Mushroom, respectively (or 15 Star Bits if scanned while on Starship Mario). Additionally, amiibo figures from the Super Mario franchise grant coins (or several Star Bits if scanned while on Starship Mario), while all other compatible amiibo grant Star Bits.
  • Banktoad no longer stores the player's Star Bits. He informs the player about amiibo instead.[17]
    • Due to this change, unlocking The Perfect Run instead requires the player to have held 9,999 Star Bits on Starship Mario at any point in the game.[18]
  • Rosalina is now available as an icon at the start. Her icon was unlocked after 120 Power Stars are collected in the original release.
  • When saving, an icon appears at the bottom left corner of the screen. The player can freely move around while the game is saving.
  • In the original, player 2 could make random sounds come from Wii Remote speakers by pressing +Control Pad, Plus Button, Minus Button, One Button and Two Button. These sounds can no longer be played.

Changes taken from Super Mario 3D All-Stars[edit]

  • The title screen now only says to press A Button instead of A Button and B Button. Unlike 3D All-Stars, however, pressing B Button no longer emits a yellow glow effect that appears around the logo.
  • Miis can no longer be selected as a save icon.[19]
  • Due to the lack of speakers in the Joy-Con controllers, any sounds played through the Wii Remote speakers in the original game are instead heard through the game's audio.
  • The animated icon for how to spin by shaking the Wii Remote is changed to a Joy-Con (R). The animated icon for motion control-related tutorials displays guidance for both a Joy-Con (R) and the entire Nintendo Switch console in handheld mode, regardless of which input is being used at the time.
  • The text has been updated to reflect the new controls, and the game features extra tutorial dialogue to accommodate for handheld mode.
  • The player can no longer spin the star cursor by tilting the controller, or pan the camera while in cannons by holding down the crouch button (ZL Button) and moving the controller away from the screen, due to the lack of a Sensor Bar.
  • Due to the lack of a Sensor Bar, the Star Pointer originally brought up by the Wii Remote automatically is instead brought up by pressing R Button on any menu (or clicking the stick in Co-Star Mode), in order to stay faithful to the original Wii's menu controls.
  • Bunnies that need to be chased move slower than in the Wii version.[citation needed]
  • Due to the lack of Nunchuk compatibility, the text boxes that appear when it needs to be connected, when it is connected, and when communications with it have been interrupted no longer appear.
  • The icon and warning sound that appeared when the Wii Remote is low on batteries no longer appear. Lubba does not comment on the player's Joy-Con or Pro Controller being low on batteries.
  • The messages that were sent to the Wii Message Board upon beating the game once and for collecting all 242 Power Stars are now read by the Mailtoad in-game. The photos included on the Wii Message Board are now sent to the Nintendo Switch album.
    • The photo of all 242 Power Stars is now replaced with one depicting Rosalina in the Library with two Lumas resembling Lubba and Mari.

Visuals[edit]

  • As with the version of Super Mario Galaxy included in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the game runs at 1080p in docked mode and 720p in handheld mode.[20]
    • An update, when played on the Nintendo Switch 2, allows the game to run at 4K in docked mode and 1080p in handheld mode.[14]
  • The UI has been updated.[20]
    • The HUD font used for the Life Meter, currencies, race ranks, and the "Welcome to the Galaxy!", "3", "2", "1", "Start!", "Time's up!", "Too bad!", "Goal!", "You lose", "Game Over", "You Got a Star!", "You Got a Grand Star!", and "The End" text has been replaced with the modern Super Mario font introduced in Super Mario 3D Land, and appears less glossy than in the original. In addition, the aforementioned text is now stylized in all caps.[15]
  • Most environmental and character textures have been replaced with higher-resolution versions.[21]
  • Bowser's face transition upon the player losing a life no longer occurs; the screen now simply fades to black.
  • The intro cutscenes for all Green Star missions can now be skipped on the first playthrough.

Text and translations[edit]

  • The game is now localized in Simplified Chinese, Dutch, and Brazilian Portuguese.
    • The game has been re-titled in Korean from Super Mario Wii 2: Galaxy Adventure Together to Super Mario Galaxy 2, making the Korean version consistent with other regions, and simultaneously dropping the Wii branding.
  • Lubba is now referred to as female across all localizations as opposed to some regions having the character as male in their localization.
  • The British English version of the game now uses American spelling, grammar and terms, and its minor text differences from the American English version of the original release have for the most part been removed. However, European date formats, as well as the localized credits from the original European release including the credit for "UK English Adaptation", are still present when playing in all European-region languages including English.
  • In Italian, some titles have been renamed, most of them to give the bosses and enemies their recent names, such as Peewee Piranha and the Cosmic Clones.
  • In the Chinese version, DF Fang Yuan is now used as the body text font instead of DF Pop, making it consistent with the Simplified Chinese version of Super Mario Galaxy.
  • In the Korean version, KoreanNGL is now used as the body text font instead of KoreanSDNR.
