Gears appear in Super Mario Odyssey in the sub-area with the Power Moon Stepping Over the Gears in the Luncheon Kingdom. They are horizontal platforms with four blades that rotate counterclockwise at the same time, though they stop for a brief moment at regular intervals. Gears appear with other gears above them, connected by a pole, which extends to lava below. Two sets of gears appear in this sub-area: one with two gears and another one with three gears.

Cogs (also known as gears) are obstacles in some Mario platformers. They have the ability to push the player off if one tries to climb one.

History

Yoshi franchise

Yoshi's Story

Sprockets[1] appear in Yoshi's Story in the Mecha Castle. They are wooden and can make a Yoshi lose a life only if the player rushes to two sprockets and they are spinning towards each other.

Yoshi's Crafted World

Cogs reappear in Yoshi's Crafted World in Mr. Geary's Factory, behaving as they do in the New Super Mario Bros. games. Additionally, an animate cog known as Mr. Geary is fought at the end of said level.

Donkey Kong franchise

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

In Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, cogs appear in the Clock Tower, where Donkey Kong must maneuver a Helibird around them.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

In Donkey Kong Country Returns, gears appear primarily in Gear Getaway, where they are obstacles to the Rocket Barrel.

Super Mario series

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, cogs can be found in World 1-Castle. If the player remains under one, they are squished and lose a life. The player is required to platform across them to reach the boss door. Additionally, cog-like wheels can be found in World 6-Airship.

New Super Mario Bros. U

New Super Mario Bros. U brings back cogs in Crushing-Cogs Tower. They serve as platforms so the player can reach the top of the tower to fight Boom Boom.

New Super Luigi U

Cogs reappear in the New Super Mario Bros. U expansion, New Super Luigi U, in Crushing-Cogs Tower's equivalent, which is Flame-Gear Tower, and Hot Cogs.
