Bonehead Jeds are skeletal dinosaur enemies with long necks riding wooden carts full of tar. They appear in Donkey Kong Country Returns, its Nintendo 3DS port and its Nintendo Switch port. In the original release, they are found in three levels of the Cliff world - Sticky Situation, Prehistoric Path, and Boulder Roller. In the ports, Bonehead Jeds also appear in Tar Ball Fall, a level of Cloud that is based on Cliff.
Bonehead Jeds normally keep their necks short in their carts. They move forward by pushing their hands along the ground, but they reverse direction at edges and walls. When either Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are both near a Bonehead Jed and in the air, the Bonehead Jed quickly extends its long neck upward, which makes the enemy more difficult to bypass. After some amount of time, it slowly retracts its neck to the standard size. If the player touches a Bonehead Jed, it bites them and they lose a heart.
Bonehead Jeds are immune or resistant to a number of attacks. The shockwaves of the Ground Pound and Popgun Pound fail to stun them. The Barrel Roll, Cartwheel Attack, and Kong Roll fail to inflict damage, instead the moves are cancelled and the player is pushed backward. Jumping onto a Bonehead Jed only temporarily stuns it, by causing their head to bounce away and land upside down next to the cart. If their neck was extended when it was it, the Bonehead Jed immediately reverts to normal before entering this stunned state. In this state, the hands shift around to find the head, and the state ends when the hands pick up the head and put it back onto the body. As with all stunned enemies in Donkey Kong Country Returns, a stunned Bonehead Jed is unable to inflict contact damage; instead the player is pushed backward on contact. To defeat a Bonehead Jed, the player has to either stun it by jumping on it then follow up while it is stunned with a second jump or a Barrel Roll (or equivalent), or throw a barrel at the Bonehead Jed.
Hothead Jed is a variation that can shoot fireballs. They appear in every level with Bonehead Jed except for Tar Ball Fall.
