Stu is the third boss in the game Donkey Kong Country Returns and its Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch ports. He is the boss of the Ruins area, appearing in the level Ruined Roost. Initially, Stu is inside a large egg before he is hypnotized by Gong Oh. Stu is a giant red bird with blue and yellow-tipped feathers and blue talons. He has a big yellow beak, blue eyes, and purple eyelids. Stu wears a golden crown with a jewel in its center and hides inside a large golden cauldron decorated with a stylized bird's face and filled with bombs. His wings and feet stick out from holes in the cauldron.

For his boss fight, Stu's most basic attack is throwing three bombs, which explode after a short time. In order to damage Stu, the player must throw the bombs back at the boss, similar to the Bowser boss battle in Super Mario World. However, after being hit once, Stu starts throwing bombs that explode faster. After the second hit, Stu begins throwing gold tinged bombs with a yellow skull face. This bomb explodes quickly, and creates flames that move through the whole arena if it explodes while touching the ground. After throwing a few bombs of either type, he will remain idle in the air for a few seconds and then swoop down over the arena. After Stu is hit three times, he throws a huge missile in the middle of the arena, which releases a shock wave upon exploding that destroys the bottom part of the pillars. He also throws multiple bombs over the entire arena and swoops twice. Occasionally, Stu sends Tiki Pops to go after Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.

Stu is defeated after he is hit six times. After being defeated, Stu's cauldron falls apart, revealing his naked belly and Gong Oh.

Stu's battle theme, "Savory Stu", is only one of the three boss themes which can be unlocked in the game's music gallery, the others being Mangoruby's theme, and Tiki Tong's themne.

In the Ruins area, Gong Tiki puts a mysterious egg into a golden cauldron and then jumps in after it. Five seconds later, the newly hatched chick breaks holes for its wings and legs and takes to the air. When Stu chucks bombs from his cauldron, pick them up and return the explosives to him. It's only fair, right? (American English)
Deep within ancient ruins, Tiki shaman Gong Oh drops an egg into a golden cauldron, and magically causes it to hatch. Out of the egg pops Stu, his wings and talons busting through the cauldron. He's got bombs in there, and he loves to throw them. Chuck them back at him before they explode! (British English)

Naming[edit]

Stu's name is a pun on "stew", as he has a cauldron as his armor. This is supported by the fact that his music track is called "Savory Stu".
