Skellirexes are animate dinosaur skeleton enemies that appear in Donkey Kong Country Returns and its Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch ports. They have a small body and a large crested skull vaguely reminiscent of Parasaurolophus. They first appear in the level Tumblin' Temple, but they mostly appear in the Cliff world. In Prehistoric Path, there are Skellirexes riding in mine carts.
Like most enemies, Skellirexes walk forward but turn around at the edges of platforms. If Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong collide with a Skellirex without attacking it, it bites them and they lose a heart. Skellirexes are vulnerable to all attacks in the game. Defeating a Skellirex destroys its body, but the head bounces away and becomes a Skullyrex.
Skellirexes riding mine carts simply ride toward or away the player. If they collide with the player, both the player and the Skellirex are defeated. To avoid this, the player has to jump over or onto the Skellirex. Landing on a Skellirex in a mine cart defeats the Skellirex safely, and they can be used to jump to higher places or grab items.
An unlockable piece of concept artwork depicts a Skellirex, but it more closely resembles a Tyrannosaurus and is missing its crest.
