Not to be confused with Tiki Tong Tower.

Tiki Tong Terror is the boss level of Volcano in Donkey Kong Country Returns and its Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch ports. In it, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong scale Tiki Tong Tower by Rocket Barrel and fight the final boss, Tiki Tong. Unlike all other boss levels, there is a non-trivial portion of terrain prior to the boss battle, namely a vertically scrolling Rocket Barrel segment.

There are three songs that play during the level: "Burnin' Bop" for the lead up to the Rocket Barrel, "Red Rockin'" for the Rocket Barrel segment, and "Tiki Tong Song" for the boss battle.

In the Time Attack mode, a time of 2:17:00 is needed for a shiny gold medal, a time of 2:23:00 for gold, a time of 2:42:00 for silver, and a time of 3:28:00 for bronze.

Overview[edit]

The player starts on a flat portion of ground with the Tiki Tong Tower very close in the background. Walking forward far enough for the first time after starting the level, and therefore not happening if the player is defeated but uses a Red Balloon to return to the level, starts a cutscene where the Kongs look up at the tower. It cuts between several obstacles on the around the tower on the path: drums, saws on drums, and balloons. Finally, the Tiki Tong Tower's eyes turn red and it opens its mouth. After the area with the cutscene, there is a DK Barrel available, followed by a cliff with the Rocket Barrel.

The Rocket Barrel launches vertically in this level, taking the Kongs up Tiki Tong Tower. First they have to fly between three sets of two drums extending from the left and right sides of the screen. The first and last sets have openings in the center of the screen, the second has an opening on the right side of the screen. Next, two sets of two spiked shafts come from the sides of the screen and collide in the center, requiring the player to speed up to get past before the shafts either hit them or block the path. This is followed by another five sets of two drums, with their openings in the following order: center, left, center, right, center. Last, a pair of sawblades whose support structures extend from the left and right sides of the screen like the drums move from left to right on the screen. The width of the space between the blades is consistent, and passing through is the only way forward.

After this, the player enters an area with an array of bananas and banana bunches. A Red Balloon floats around, but it very quickly floats away. Five balloons piloted by Tiki Goons attack the player in this section. Each one creeps up from the bottom of the screen, then slowly rises upward while trying to match the horizontal position of the Rocket Barrel before leaving off the top of the screen. The balloons appear one at a time, but they do appear even while another balloon is still flying across the screen. The array of bananas and banana bunches thins out as the player rises, such that the center of the screen always has bananas but the left and right sides of the screen lose bananas. The result looks something like blocks stacked to form a rocketship.

With the balloons over with, the player has to fly through two more sets of two drums, both with openings in the center and the first of them having a very wide opening, followed by another pair of spiked shafts. Now, the player has to fly around protruding portions of the Tiki Tong Tower itself. There are seven: the first four come in pairs of two that each take up the middle left and middle right portions of the screen, the fifth is in the center of the screen, and the last two are in the same positions as the first two. Up next is another set of two drums with an opening in the center, then a pair of sawblades moving from right to left on the screen. The Rocket Barrel section ends on two more pairs of spiked shafts and one pair of drums with an usually narrow opening in the center of the screen. Reaching the middle of those drums, not actually needing to go all the way through, initiates a cutscene where the Rocket Barrel reaches the top of Tiki Tong Tower then crash lands inside the mouth.

Another cutscene plays immediately after, the pre-rendered Prebattle cutscene: The mouth closes behind the Kongs just before they recover from the landing and when they recover they notice a large pile of seemingly freely available bananas. They celebrate, but before they can act on this discovery, Krazy Kalimba, The Maraca Gang, Gong Oh, Banjo Bottom, Wacky Pipes, Xylobone, and Cordian all appear from behind the pile. This is followed by Tiki Tong's head floating down from off screen. In an odd ritual of sorts, the Tikis take the bananas and throw them into Tiki Tong's head, who spins to blend them and then spits out the juice onto the other Tikis. The juice covered Tikis form two clumps, one made of four of them and the other of two, and then each transforms into a hand for Tiki Tong. Tiki Tong shouts and both he and the Kongs prepare for battle. Prebattle is an invisible checkpoint, dying during the battle resets the player to the start of this cutscene.

Battle[edit]

Tiki Tong's attack pattern consists of taking its hands, putting them sideways and sliding them left and right, which the Kongs must dodge by ducking under them. It can also take its hands and clap or slam them into the ground. Tiki Tong can grab Diddy and Donkey Kong or raise one of its hands up and bring it down quickly, leaving him vulnerable. Donkey and Diddy Kong must jump on the red spot on Tong's hands when they are down in order to hurt them. Each hand explodes in a plume of bananas when hit twice.

After losing both hands, Tiki Tong gets enraged. The attack pattern goes from a head slam-drop and then to releasing flaming enemies that either target the Kongs or drop slowly. These are usually long, enduring processes and hearts do not come often. Any hearts that are released begin on fire and will hurt the player if touched right away. A larger, more fierce head drop takes the top part of the boss's head off for a short period of time revealing another red, glowing weak spot which must be jumped on three times to finally defeat Tiki Tong.
