Bopapodamuses are enemies that appear in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. They are tree-climbing hippopotamus-like species that hang on to poles. The appear in only two levels—the Forest levels Tippin' Totems (where there are six) and Springy Spores (where there are eight). A total of fourteen are found across these levels.

During the levels, the Kongs must jump on the Bopapodamuses to get across large gaps. The Kongs can only jump on a Bopapodamus four times; after that, it falls into the abyss, leaving the Kongs vulnerable to also falling down. If the Kongs do not jump directly on a Bopapodamus's head, it swats them down into the pit, causing them to lose a life.

Naming[edit]

Bopapodamuses' name is a portmanteau of "bop" and "hippopotamus."

Names in other languages[edit]

Language Name Meaning Notes
Japanese ポパポタマス[?]
Popapotamasu
Derivation of「ヒポポタマス」(hipopotamasu, hippopotamus)
Italian Ippotronco[?] Hippo-log
Spanish Hundipótamo[?] From "hundir" (to sink) and "hipopótamo" (hippopotamus)

Notes[edit]

  • Bopapodamuses were planned to reappear in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, but they never made it in the final game. According to concept art, they were supposed to float on water surfaces instead of being on poles.
  • Like with most enemies, Bopapodamuses award coins and eventually balloons if Donkey Kong successfully defeats a chain of them without landing. However, due to a glitch, this was removed from Donkey Kong Country Returns HD.[1]
