History

Mario is Missing!

London one of the many cities Luigi has to visit in the game Mario is Missing!. In the NES version, it is in the fifth pair of levels alongside Buenos Aires - in all other versions, it is in the final level set. Like all cities in the game, Koopa Troopas stole famous artifacts from its landmarks to fund their scheme to melt Antarctica. These are: the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London, a Bust of Shakespeare from Westminster Abbey, and Big Ben's minute hand. In the PC version, they also stole the bearskin hat of a Buckingham Palace guard and the Door to 10 Downing Street. Luigi has to find and return them to the respective landmarks.

In Mario's Time Machine, Mario travels back in time to London circa 1595 to return the stolen Crown of the then-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth I. However, Mario only enters the queen's palace, and does not explore any of London. While there, he also talks to one of the queen's servants, one of the queen's handmaidens, and Francis Drake. Mario later travels back in time to 1831 to return a Magnet to Michael Faraday, talking to Sarah Barnard, Charles-Gaspard de la Rive, and a boy who claims to be an heir to the throne of England while there. Later still, Mario travels back in time to 1843, visiting one of London's streets to return Charles Dickens' Inkwell. There, he talks to a grumpy banker, a poor orphan, and Charles's wife, Catherine Dickens. In all three time periods, he leaves the city after returning the important item to its respective owner.

In Mario Kart Tour, there is a course based on London called London Loop, which debuted in and served as the signature course of the London Tour. A second route for the course named London Loop 2 debuted in the Baby Rosalina Tour, and a third called London Loop 3 was later introduced in the 2021 Halloween Tour. London Loop returns in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as part of the Booster Course Pass DLC.

Some of the landmarks in London can be seen, including the Admiralty Arch, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Charing Cross, The Gherkin, Leadenhall Market, London City Hall, London Eye, Nelson's Column, River Thames, The Shard, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, St Paul's Cathedral, Victoria Memorial, and The Walkie Talkie. Also scattered across the course are multiple pillar boxes, seen across the United Kingdom, alongside many red telephone boxes.

A picture of London can be seen on a page of the Flybrary Book glider.

DIC cartoons

London was also referenced in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. During the events of "Reptiles in the Rose Garden", it was mentioned by Luigi as one of the cities that Bowser was planning to attack after he succeeded in taking over the United States of America. However, Mario and Luigi stopped the Koopa Troop before this could happen.

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, the city of Victoria appears to be based on London.
