The Chisel is an item in the SNES and PC releases of Mario's Time Machine. It is used for carving marble, and belongs to famed sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti. It also features his initials. As Michelangelo is working on David, the Chisel is stolen by a time-travelling Bowser, who wants to feature it in his museum filled with stolen artifacts. Mario later takes the Chisel himself and travels back in time to Florence in the year 1503 in an attempt to return it to its rightful owner. As he does not know that it belongs to Michelangelo, he talks to various people within Florence, including Raphael Sanzio. Raphael mentions that Michelangelo has begun working on a new sculpting project, and an apprentice sculptor points out the initials on it and that the Chisel is of high quality. Eventually, Mario realizes who it belongs to and brings it to Michelangelo, who had been previously shouting about how he was missing his chisel. Michelangelo thanks Mario and begins to carve once more.
