"Underground BGM",[1] also known as "Underground Theme",[2] is a recurring musical theme composed by Koji Kondo, first appearing in World 1-2 of Super Mario Bros. The theme, often associated with underground levels, has become one of the most recognizable and iconic in the Super Mario franchise.[3] Like "Ground BGM", it has seen many reuses and arrangements in later games and media, sometimes as a medley of the two themes.

The original theme is darker than the rest of the soundtrack in Super Mario Bros., being a short, looping tune played mostly in 3
4
time and lasting about 11 seconds.

Composition[edit]

In composing the theme, Kondo said, "It was really concentrated on the space between the notes, and using a few notes to create that feeling of being underground -- that sort of creepy atmosphere is something I really focused on".[4] Super Mario Bros. designer Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that the theme was an "even more perfect fit" than "Ground BGM".[5]

The theme has a similar melody to the jazz instrumental "Let's Not Talk About It" from Lee Ritenour's ninth studio album, Friendship, released in 1979.[6] This is most evident on the funky bassline of "Underground BGM", resembling the opening beat of the song.[7]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

In Super Mario Bros. 3, an arrangement of "Underground BGM" plays in underground areas and bonus rooms. It also plays in the main levels of Dark Land, with the game's "Ground Theme" being completely absent from that world. This version is the first to play fully in a 4
4
time signature and add a percussion beat at the start of the theme (which carries through the rest of the theme), both traits which would go on to be reused in many of the later arrangements.

"Underground BGM" mainly plays in the following levels:

Super Mario 64[edit]

See also: Hazy Maze Cave (theme)

In Super Mario 64 and its Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, an extended arrangement of "Underground BGM", titled "Hazy Maze Cave" in the Nintendo Music app and "Cave Dungeon" in the official Super Mario 64 Original Soundtrack album, plays in cave areas, including Hazy Maze Cave, Wet-Dry World, Wiggler's cave of Tiny-Huge Island, Behind the Waterfall, the pyramid in Shifting Sand Land, and the igloo in Snowman's Land. New notes were added in this arrangement, and the introduction is a longer, unique melody. The theme's main melody is played on bass guitar. This arrangement also uses a haunting vocal track for certain areas in lieu of the bass guitar, specifically for the Hazy Maze and Underground Lake in Hazy Maze Cave, and for the downtown area in Wet-Dry World. Outside these two courses, the arrangement incorporates both the bass guitar and vocal tracks for the other locations.

Super Mario Advance series[edit]

In the Mario Bros. minigame featured in each game of the Super Mario Advance series, a fast-paced arrangement of "Underground BGM" appears as one of the two regular stage themes, first playing in Phase 5. This arrangement uses the NES bass sound for the main melody.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

In Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch ports, Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, three arrangements of "Underground BGM" were arranged by the game's main composer Mahito Yokota.

The first, titled "Space Athletic", is a slower-paced, techno arrangement that plays on several galaxies and planets, including Flipswitch Galaxy, Sand Spiral Galaxy, and the interiors of Battlerock Galaxy, Dusty Dune Galaxy's pyramid, and Dreadnought Galaxy.

The second, titled "Interlude", is a much slower-paced, eerie arrangement that plays in areas such as the first area of Ghostly Galaxy and Deep Dark Galaxy, as well as before the boss fight with Dino Piranha and Fiery Dino Piranha after breaking their eggs. This version only uses the theme's first four measures.

The third, titled "Cosmic Comet", is a fast-paced techno arrangement done at 140 beats per minute that mixes in "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. and "Shadow Mario" from Super Mario Sunshine. “The music for the underground courses in Super Mario games may sound like it always has the same arrangement, but it actually differs subtly each time. Perhaps next time we'll shake things up with a major reworking... Or perhaps not!”
Liner notes in the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack

In Super Mario 3D World and the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, an arrangement of "Underground BGM titled "Underground Theme" in the game's soundtrack album plays in underground levels. Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, three arrangements that incorporate "Underground BGM"'s main motif appear.

The first arrangement, titled "Underground Theme" in the Nintendo Music app, plays in underground areas. Much like "Delfino Airstrip" from Super Mario Sunshine, the main motif is reduced to three notes.

The other, quieter arrangement, titled "Poison-Swamp Underground Theme" in the Nintendo Music app, plays in darker levels such as Swamp Pipe Crawl, Light-Switch Mansion, and Another Uncharted Area: Swaying Ruins.

A trombone is added to the main melodies of "Underground Theme" and "Poison-Swamp Underground Theme" when the player is in Elephant form. On the Nintendo Music app, these remixes share the same track as the original in a medley. The same themes fade out their percussion when the player is in a standstill or going through a Warp Pipe.

"Doomy-Gloom Wonder", itself an arrangement of "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros., incorporates a repeating arrangement of the last few notes of "Underground BGM". This theme plays during certain Wonder Effects, such as the Flying Battleship ones, or when the player is being chased by Rift Mario.

Super Mario DIC cartoons[edit]

Various arrangements of "Underground BGM" can occasionally be heard in episodes throughout The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, a loose arrangement of "Underground BGM", titled "Peach's Castle - Underground" in the game's sound test, plays while in the dungeon of Peach's Castle.

A more faithful arrangement titled "Graffiti Underground" plays in Graffiti Underground. The theme is dynamic; when Mario is in a fully dark area, only the main melody is heard, more closely resembling the original version of "Underground BGM". When Mario turns on the lights, a bass and drum backing track is added. On repeat visits to the area, the full instrumentation is always heard.

Main section: Super Bell Subway (theme) § Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

In Mario Kart 8 and its Nintendo Switch port, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, as part of the Animal Crossing × Mario Kart 8 DLC, "Underground BGM"'s main motif can be heard on bass guitar in "Super Bell Subway (Underground)", which plays in the underground section of Super Bell Subway. It was arranged by Atsuko Asahi.

The liner notes make a comment that "Super Bell Subway (Underground)" is the first instance of the "Underground BGM" motif being recorded live specifically for a video game. However Pushmo World, which featured the theme performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, was released a year prior to Animal Crossing × Mario Kart 8.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, "Underground BGM" is arranged multiple times in the score, which was composed by Brian Tyler. A slow arrangement at a similar tempo to "Interlude" from Super Mario Galaxy plays in the track "The Warp Pipe" when Mario and Luigi investigate Brooklyn's sewers. The main melody of the theme can be heard in "Press Start", and the descending notes at the end of the theme play in "Welcome to the Mushroom Kingdom" when Mario reaches the Brick Block bridge while on his way with Toad to Peach's Castle. A more direct arrangement of the theme is featured in the credits theme, "Level Complete", alongside other Super Mario themes; this arrangement incorporates the whistle heard in the Toad Brigade's theme from Super Mario Galaxy. All of these tracks are featured on the film's soundtrack.

During a jam session between Bowser and Kamek after the latter interrupts his song, Bowser plays "Underground BGM" on his piano, with Kamek responding with sound effects from Super Mario Bros.. Captions refer to the theme as the "Underground Theme".

A piano arrangement of the first six notes plays when Luigi is shown locked in a cage in the film's final trailer.[8]

On the Super Mario Bros. Plumbing website, one of the reviewers is named "dunnadunnadunna", a vocal interpretation of the main melody of "Underground BGM".[9]

Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo[edit]

"Underground BGM" is played as part of the "Underground" alarm in the Super Mario Bros. theme of Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo.

Other arrangements[edit]

In the Japan-exclusive Just Dance Wii and the Wii version of Just Dance 3 (in which the song is downloadable content), the song "Just Mario" (whose artist is simply credited as "Ubisoft meets Nintendo") is a medley of remixes of "Ground BGM", "Invincibility BGM", and "Underground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. The song returns in the Nintendo Switch version of Just Dance 2018, albeit with the themes fully arranged instead of remixed.

In Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition, a techno arrangement by Taku Inoue[11] of "Underground BGM" plays in Mushroom Battles.

Pushmo World contains a medley consisting of "Ground BGM", "Underground BGM", and "Underwater BGM" from Super Mario Bros.

Taiko no Tatsujin: Nijiiro Version and Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival contain a medley track titled "Super Mario Bros." It includes "Underground BGM" along with "Ground BGM", "Invincibility BGM", "Underwater BGM", "Castle BGM", "World Clear", "Ending", and various sound effects from Super Mario Bros.
