The Cave People are native humans of Dinosaur World that appear in most episodes of the Super Mario World television series, resembling the prehistoric peoples of Earth. The most notable Cave Person is Oogtar, a mischief-making cave boy who often pulls practical jokes in the show. Other notable Cave People include Ooga and Ugga, who first appear in the episode "The Wheel Thing" and later appear in several other episodes of the show as cameos. The Cave People are rather naive, and are often taken advantage of by King Koopa and his minions in the show, who take advantage of their naivety to carry out their plans. Mario and Luigi also try to introduce modern concepts to the Cave People in the show, though they are rarely successful.

The Cave People are analogous to present-day humans, and are often used as a means to help teach viewers a lesson in the show.

General information[edit]

The Cave People are depicted as traditional cavemen, wearing hide clothing and often having long hair. They are generally short in appearance, analogous to Toads. Following common tropes, most Cave People speak stereotypical caveman gibberish are portrayed as somewhat unintelligent, such as a caveman swinging on a vine in into a tree. The Cave People are usually slow to understand new concepts, such as Ooga and Ugga initially not understanding the purpose of the wheels Mario and Luigi introduce to them, using the wheels as more items to carry, as hats, and as a flyswatter. The Cave People also rather naive, often not realizing when they have been tricked until it is too late, such as the Cave People attending the Koopaling Bros. Circus, unaware that it is a trap by King Koopa and his Koopalings to feed them to his dinosaur minions. In the episode "Party Line", the Cave People are said to be illiterate.

Despite this, there are few Cave People that are able to speak in a simplified language, most notably Oogtar. This simplified language is very similar to that of English, but with the absence of articles, copulas, and verb conjugation, with most verbs being unconjugated. This simplified language is also spoken by Yoshi, whose role similar to that of Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and accompanies the Mario Bros. and the Princess during their stay in Dinosaur World. In the episode "The Wheel Thing", it is revealed that the Princess is able to understand the gibberish spoken by the Cave People, such as when Ugga tells the Princess that they threw the Mario Bros. into the Lava Pits.

All Cave People live in Dome City, a city in Dinosaur World consisting of buildings shaped like domes that appear to be based off the spotted stacks seen in the background of several levels of Super Mario World. Mama Fireplant lives in one of the domes, and is the source of the Cave People's fire. The Mario Bros., the Princess, and Yoshi also reside in the Cave People in the Dome Castle, which serves as the de jure head of state of Dome City that also doubles as their home.
