"Wii Koopa Cape"[1] is a musical theme in Mario Kart Wii, where it plays in the race course of the same name. The theme is mainly lead by synths and brass instruments, most prominently a synth which produces a "Wub" sound. The theme also features accompanying steelpans, as well as cuíca and whistle percussion. The steelpans later take over the lead position during the bridge before the song loops.

"Koopa Cape" is one of 5 course themes in Mario Kart Wii to be adaptive, the others being "Toad's Factory", "Wario's Gold Mine", "Dry Dry Ruins", "Moonview Highway", and "Bowser's Castle". As such, the theme will swap to different variations featuring alternate instrumentation depending on the player's location, specifically when going downstream or underwater. The theme would continue to be adaptive for all it's future appearances as a classic course.

History[edit]

Mario Kart Wii[edit]

Mario Kart Wii marks the first appearance of "Koopa Cape".

The downstream variant adds more prominent percussion, as well as additional backing marimbas and the guitar from Wario's Gold Mine. The guitar becomes especially prominent during the bridge.

The underwater variant, opposite to the downstream variant makes the percussion less strong, removes a number of instruments, including most of the leads, and creates a much more subtle feeling suited for the environment of the underwater section.

In the official Mario Kart Wii Platinum Soundtrack album, all 3 versions of "Koopa Cape" are played in sequence on the same track.

Mario Kart 7[edit]

In Mario Kart 7, an arrangement of "Koopa Cape" plays in Wii Koopa Cape. It is likewise titled "Wii Koopa Cape" in the Nintendo Music app. This arrangement uses higher-quality samples, but it is otherwise near identical to the original. Like with the rest of the courses in Mario Kart 7, a looping drum set beat is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is driving at top speed while in first place.

Notably, this version of Koopa Cape lacks the variant of its theme for going downstream, only having the variant for being underwater.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

In Mario Kart Tour, the original version of "Koopa Cape" plays in Wii Koopa Cape. Despite reusing the original theme, the course follows in the footsteps of Mario Kart 7 and similarly lacks the downstream variant.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Koopa Cape returns as a classic course in the Booster Course Pass. An arrangement of "Koopa Cape", titled "Wii Koopa Cape" in the Nintendo Music app, plays in said course. This arrangement sees the downstream variant from the original return and get it's own arrangement along with the other versions. Like with the rest of the courses in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a looping drum set beat is added over the theme whenever the player is driving at top speed while in first place.
