"Underground BGM"[1] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for Super Mario World, where it plays in the underground levels. It is a slower-paced, more ominous-sounding arrangement of "Ground BGM" from the same game.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario World[edit]

Super Mario World marks the first appearance of "Underground BGM".

Additional bongo percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is riding a Yoshi. This remix is titled "Yoshi Underground BGM" in the Nintendo Music app.

Both "Underground BGM" and "Yoshi Underground BGM" return for the same purposes in the port of the game included in Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World.

"Underground BGM" is also included in the official albums Super Mario World and The 30th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. Music. In the Super Mario World album, the normal and Yoshi versions of "Underground BGM" are played in sequence on the same track.

In the Game Boy Advance remake of Super Mario World, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, an arrangement of "Underground BGM" plays for the same purpose as in the original game. Additional percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player rides a Yoshi.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

In Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, the original version of "Underground BGM" plays in Super Mario World-style underground-themed levels. "Yoshi Underground BGM" from Super Mario World plays whenever the player rides a Yoshi.

An ambient arrangement of "Underground BGM" plays while editing Super Mario World-style underground-themed levels in the Course Maker. This arrangement uses eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix.

Exclusively in Super Mario Maker 2, a music box arrangement of "Underground BGM" plays in the nighttime version of Super Mario World-style underground-themed levels.

Super Mario World television series[edit]

In the Super Mario World television series, an arrangement of "Underground BGM" arranged by Michael Tavera is featured in various episodes of the show. It appears to be arranged using only the original game's right speaker, evident by the arrangement's percussion.

Mario Kart World[edit]

In Mario Kart World, a punk blues arrangement can play in Free Roam during the day, on the route from Dandelion Depths to Boo Cinema in the Leaf Cup, on VS Race routes coming from Boo Cinema during any time of day, and on any VS Race route during nighttime.
