Hello readers! Welcome to Pipe Plaza, and thank you for taking the time out of your busy days to read this section. I hope you're all enjoying Easter, at least those who celebrate the holiday, I know I celebrate the chocolate I get. And maybe get from you? You know, if you wanted to send me some chocolate it'd be nice.

Not a lot to talk about Pipe Plaza wise. Paper Yoshi (talk) is busy studying for some very important exams, so he won't be here this month, or next month. I wish him the best of luck, and I'm sure he'll do fine.

We had a grand total of 22 votes last month, which is an astonishing total! Especially as we draw closer to our anniversary awards. I sincerely hope you continue to read, and enjoy Pipe Plaza. I'll see you here next month.

Featured

Written by: Yoshi876 (talk)

Hello 'Shroom readers and welcome back to another edition of Featured, the only place this side of the Mario Wiki where you'll get news about the Mario Wiki Featured Articles. And we start with some actual news. Recently some FA nominations have had their issues fixed last minute, but because of the cut-off time they were unable to become unfeatured. Whilst this is going through a case-by-case basis, it can be possible to renominate an article immediately after it's failed. But that will only be the case if the issues were fixed, so if a nomination fails, and the opposing reasons were still valid at the end of the nomination, it will have to wait the standard two months.

Featured Articles

No new articles have been featured in the past month.

Re-Featured Articles

No new articles have become re-featured.

FA Nominations

There is one ongoing Featured Article Nomination.

Failed FA Nominations

One new article has failed the featuring process.

  • Luigi failed on 7 April, 2017. It failed the featuring process because the page had some organization issues.

Unfeatured Articles

One new article has been unfeatured in the past month.

  • Mario Kart Wii was unfeatured on 15 February, 2017. It was unfeatured due to being disorganized, and mot measuring up to the quality of other similar featured articles.

Unfeaturing Nominations

There are no ongoing Unfeature nominations.

Failed Unfeaturing Nominations

No new articles have failed the unfeaturing process in the past month.

Tip of the Month

Written by: FunkyK38 (talk)

When writing an article, it sometimes becomes necessary to provide some other form of reference for your readers so they know what you're talking about. I'm speaking of, of course, linking to Wikipedia. But when should you do it? If you link to everything, your article will be a mess of black, blue, and purple, which is unsightly indeed. Try to stick to the fewest links possible, unless it's a "Trivia" section where you might need more to explain your point. If you find yourself using too many, perhaps maybe you should consider rewriting it so you don't have to use so many.

Supermariofan67 (talk) Create {{editneeded}} template.

A proposal to create a editneeded template. The purpose of this template would be to allow users to flag articles or sections in need of a specific edit. The proposer argues that there are some articles or sections that need improvements that are not covered by existing templates.

Mr Squid (talk) Allow users to make a user subpage for 'Shroom sections.

A proposal to allow users to make a user supbage for their 'Shroom sections. The proposer argues that this sub page would make it easier for users who want to read all sections made by a particular user, or to simply find a certain section to read. The proposer also argues that this new sub page would also make it easier for 'Shroom writers and other users to count how many sections they've written, without having to look through every issue of The 'Shroom.

Niiue (talk) Merge Redundant Paper Mario Items.

A proposal to merge several Paper Mario items. The proposer argues that there are several items from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door which are clearly intended to return in Super Paper Mario, but have different pages due to having different English names. The proposer also argues that considering that they look identical and usually have the same name in every country except the US, they should probably be merged.

Lord Bowser (talk) Repurpose {{userspace}}.

A proposal to repurpose the Userspace template. The proposer argues that the main concerns are that it seems redundant to hand out when a user overly edits in their userspace, and that the template itself is too wordy and takes too long to get to the point. Also, many users with high userspace edits often have it due to experimentation with wiki coding, which is a productive use of editing if it is meant to go onto official articles.

A proposal to move Power Suit to Varia Suit or delete it and move the info to Zero Laser's page. The proposer argues that the information is actually incorrect. What this page calls the Power Suit is actually Samus's Varia Suit. The proposer also argues that it doesn't seem to have any purpose for either the Mario series or the Super Smash Bros. series and the only time the Power/Varia Suit needs to be mentioned is during Zero Laser's Brawl's information about how it falls apart.

Greetings! I am Alex95, here to tell you more about an upcoming game and my thoughts about it.

It's been an exciting time to be a Fire Emblem fan as the series has been gaining popularity ever since the release of Fire Emblem Awakening in 2012. Fire Emblem Heroes was just released and there are two new Fire Emblem games coming out for the Nintendo Switch! However, little is currently known about those last two, but one Fire Emblem game has been getting a ton of new information since its reveal: Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia!

For those of you that don't know, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a remake of the game Fire Emblem Gaiden, which was originally released for the Famicom in 1991. Gaiden introduced many new aspects that weren't in the first game, many of which have since become staples in the series, like a traversable overworld, and others haven't been seen since, like spell casting. Like with Super Mario Bros. 2 in the west, Gaiden almost completely ignored the gameplay of its predecessor and went on to create something new.

Classic Fire Emblem with a …Portal cube?

Shadows of Valentia is set to bring back everything Gaiden introduced and more! The game is split between two armies, Rigel and Zofia, as they go to war on the continent of Valentia. The player gains control of two childhood friends, Alm and Celica, as they build their own army to bring peace to the land. The game's engine appears to be based on Awakening's and Fate's, but restructures it to make use of Gaiden's unique gameplay. Spells are split between helping and hurting magics, called White Magic and Black Magic respectively, similar to Final Fantasy. The cost of not having an equipable tome to use? Your life! Spells cost a certain amount of health to use, so you gotta make sure you plan well enough ahead in battle to avoid losing your teammates. While Gaiden had its own unique set of weapons, Shadows of Valentia appears to be bringing in those that were in other titles, such as Iron Swords. However, it appears the Weapon Triangle will not be used, as Gaiden didn't have one. Another unique aspect that hasn't been seen since (until Fire Emblem Fates to an extent with My Castle) was the ability to freely roam towns and dungeons, though Shadows of Valentia has expanded upon that. Players can attack barrels to receive items, dash to move faster, strike enemies to gain an advantage, and examining the area around towns and buildings. However, it appears the towns have a more visual novel feel to them, as the player can select a villager to talk to while examining their surroundings, a la Phoenix Wright.

Conversations are also changed to show one character at a time rather than two or four.

Of course, the core of just about any role-playing game lies in its characters, and Fire Emblem never disappoints. The characters are beautifully remastered and have gained a new personality. The characters are split into teams of two: one led by Alm and another led by Celica. A majority of Gaiden's characters are unique, like with most other Fire Emblem's, though there were a few from Shadow Dragon that appeared. The characters will also be fully voiced! Awakening and Fates had grunts and random lines of dialogue playing at certain times, but Shadows of Valentia will have a cast of fully voiced over characters; a first in the series! Like with other Fire Emblem games, if a character falls, they are gone for good, though Shadows of Valentia will also add the "Casual Mode", which has been a series staple since Heroes of Light and Shadow, where a fallen comrade will return to fight again after the current battle has been completed. There also appears to be a "rewind" mechanic that allows you to turn back the clock to the previous turn. A couple of new characters have also been created for this remake, which is something Fire Emblem did with its other two remakes as well, so it's not as surprising. As characters battle, they will level up and their stats will become stronger, and they can change to a different class unit if they're a high enough level and visit a Mila Shrine.

The world map (in Japanese).

The game takes place on the continent of Valentia, though Awakening fans may know it as the continent of Valm. The player controls either Alm or Celicia and moves them across the map to fight enemies and traverse dungeons. The character can also stop at towns to get more information or supplies. Encountering an enemy unit on the map will bring the player to a dungeon they have to navigate and presumably fight a boss at the end. When walking around a dungeon, the player will find some monsters, and touching one will send the player into a grid-based field. Moving one unit at a time, the player has to defeat all the enemies on the field to progress. The character can select from an assortment of weapons and magics to fight, and once the weapon and enemy is selected, the battle will play out and the player has to watch and hope they've made the right choices. Striking the monster on the field will allow the player to start closer to the enemy on the grid, allowing the player to attack initially at a closer range.

Thoughts

That's about all I know on the subject, but it looks like there's still more to come! Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia will release in Japan on April 20th and everywhere else on May 19th, so there can still be additional info revealed between the time the game is released and this article goes up on The 'Shroom. The game looks amazing so far, and I wasn't too impressed with Fates myself, so hopefully this'll rekindle my love of the series. I can't wait to play this game, and I'm sure all you Fire Emblem fans out there can't either! We just have to wait a little longer… If you want to know more, then I recommend checking out the pages on Serenes Forest, a site that will keep you up to date on everything Fire Emblem! Or maybe check out the pages on the Fire Emblem wiki! See you around!

Bold means a new entry. Italics mean inactive for at least a month. Bold and italics mean there's a glitch in the Matrix.

Thread(s) of the Month(s)

December's Thread of the Month goes to GBAToad's it's december 25th here. Runners-up are LN1'S Favorite trigonometric function and Lord Bowser's pokermans.

For January, how close are you by GBAToad won Thread of the Month, while ITT: Banjo and I post X-Files images that are relatable to our relationship by Anton came a close second. NEXandGBX's the first thread of 2017 deserves a special mention, as do tardograd2's vanilla mario sucks and GBAToad's sequel thread vanilla mario has been sucked.

February's Thread of the Month went to GBAToad's daily daily thread thread, an informative and funny take on the idea of daily threads. Puddin's So I've been binge-watching Seinfeld, Moofy's lasagnacat is a national treasure and SiFi's What's this about a new logo for the wiki? came close, though.

...Wait a minute, GBAToad won all three of these. This has to be rigged.

Quotes

  • "Bill Trinen is the hero hyrule needs but not the one it deserves" - GBAToad
  • "I can't wait to check out New Donk City" - Porplemontage
  • "don't start hitting on this person because he reminds you of me" - 2257
  • "I'M YOUR ONLY THREAD I'M NOT YOUR ONLY THREAD BUT I'M A LITTLE GLOWING THREAD BUT REALLY I'M NOT ACTUALLY YOUR THREAD BUT I AM" - Packy

Mafia

Nothing much has been happening in Mafia in the past few months, but sign-ups are open for Awards Mafia 6, hosted by Perch and GBAToad (and a few other games in the Mafia board itself)! Mafia is a really fun game, and whether you're a beginner or veteran this is a fantastic time to get involved!

Thanks for reading.

Analysis

  • Which new character do you want to use the most in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? : If you’ve seen Gold Mario in a trailer, tell yourself it’s only a bad joke from Nintendo. Seriously, is anyone really interested in having a fifth version of Mario in Mario Kart? Anyway, Bowser Jr. is the favorite, followed closely by the Inklings and King Boo. Dry Bones is the last one and the one I’ll use the most.
  • What is the most important aspect of a Mario RPG for you?: For me, in an RPG, the story is the most important aspect, but I can understand why the gameplay got first place in the poll. I don’t think Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door would be so much loved by the fans, if there were no partners, a terrible battle system and full of stickers everywhere. Good gameplay is what makes the game more interesting to play.
  • Time spent on the wiki and/or its community: The majority of people who come here spend very little of their free time here. It is something that does not really surprise me, since the turnout is practically the same as we have seen on some of our previous polls. People come over here to find information about the Mario series, which is pretty much the purpose of the Super Mario Wiki.
  • Which version of Crash should be introduced?: Do you want to know the story behind this poll? So, here it is: We had received a suggestion for a poll on March 31st from the developers of the next Crash Bandicoot game, regarding a new character that was going to appear in the next Crash Bandicoot game, and as the next day the Super Mario Wiki would became the Crash Bandicoot Wiki, we thought it was the good time to offer to the visitors, the choice of the new character. The choice was received by the developers and Baby Metal Pink Gold Dry Para Shadow Blue Wacrash will be the new character! Are you happy with the choice? Be aware that if you are reading this, you have been FOOLED by the April Fool's poll!
  • Which of these sports would you most like to see made into a Mario game?: The result is divided between American football, Martial arts and Bowling. I sincerely believe there would be plenty of potential and material to make interesting games with those sports. But if I had to choose one, I would choose the American football. The multiplayer mode would be more adapted to this kind of sport. Using special items and attacks would make the game even more fun to play.

Well, that’s all for this edition of Poll Committee Discussion. Thanks for reading and come again next month for the analysis made by Roy Koopa (talk). Well, I guess I just have to disappear somewhere else.

Hello, readers! I'm your Spotlight manager and Pipe Plaza Director, Yoshi876. Welcome to Retro Feature, a section in which I delve deep into the archives to bring you the best blasts from the past. As you're aware Upcoming Game(s) is back in our paper, so this month I decided to pull an old edition of that section back up, it also happens to have been written by an old sub-team director, Paper Pikachu.

Paper Pikachu joined the wiki on 25 January 2008, originally under the name of P. Trainer. Paper Pikachu joined The 'Shroom in Issue XIII, which was released two months after they joined the wiki. Paper Pikachu's first section was Beta Elements, although this would only be written one more time. Paper Pikachu wrote a vareity of other sections, but their most notable ones were Upcoming Games, which they would write in both the Main Team, and in Pipe Plaza; and Soundtrack of the Month which was featured in Music & Artwork, the sub-team that would later be renamed as Palette Swap. Paper Pikachu would also go on to become the director of this sub-team, but due to technological shortcomings, they eventually resigned this position, and left it in the very capable hands of Super Mario Bros. (talk)

However, you're not here to hear me rattle on about past writers, you're interested in old section, so have this edition of Upcoming Games from Issue XXX.

Anniversary Announcements

Written by: Lakituthequick (talk)

“It's technically not an inconsistency if you decide on a case-by-case basis. Loopholes.”
Turboo (Talk Page · Forum Profile)

Good day ladies and gentlegoombas! Welcome back to Anniversary Announcements. How's the weather at yours? Hopefully not as changeable as it is here, great Sunday, dark Monday. Bah.

Luckily, we are not here to talk about the weather! Let's dive into last month's Awards developments!

The Cheep Chomps

Last month I told you about how the User and 'Shroom Awards have been merged into one Community Awards category.
Since then, the name "Community Awards" and the corresponding letter (C) have been officially confirmed. Also, the total amount of awards will be brought back to 15, with most cuts in the original User awards.
The host for this category will be Meta Knight, who as the director of The 'Shroom, 'owns' about two thirds of the awards.

A small extra point in this is that by omitting five awards, there will be about 25 minutes extra time during the ceremony. This time will be allotted to longer intermissions, and remaining time will be used to end the show earlier.

Next, it was decided upon what to do with the tokens that were left at the end of last year. For everyone that still had tokens, the amount has been divided by 10, and rounded to the nearest integer.

Lastly, the first tournament thread has been posted! It is Awards Mafia 6, hosted by Superchao (Talk Page · Forum Profile) and GBAToad (Talk Page · Forum Profile).
Other tournaments have not been announced yet.

Awards

Then for the awards!

The bigger change is the cutting of various Super Smash Bros.-related awards and nominees. This is because of the concern that, while a big part of it, Smash is not Mario.

Currently under discussion are the addition of Battle Courses to the awards, and equalizing the names of F11 Biggest Missed Opportunity.

I will list the additions, removals and other changes, and then a complete list of the nominees for that award.

Refer to this document for a full list of nominees.
