History

Yoshi series

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Fly Guys as they appeared in Yoshi's Island.

Fly Guys first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. In the game they carried Red Coins, 1-Ups, Coins, ? Clouds or even bombs. In some levels one of them would swoop down carrying a ? Cloud or a Red Coin, and if Yoshi didn't get them in time the Fly Guy would float back up and laugh mockingly. There was also flashing Fly Guys that flew around flashing like they were invincible and if you didn't pop a balloon after a while, it turns into a Green Fly Guy and fly away and laugh mockingly.

Yoshi's Story

Fly Guys make an appearance in Yoshi's Story. They would come in a line of four. If the Yoshi could defeat all four with one egg, he would be awarded with a melon. They appear in Stage 3-3: Poochy and Nippy, Stage 3-4: Frustration, and Stage 5-3: Shy Guy Limbo.

Yoshi's Island DS

Fly Guys behaved similarly in Yoshi's Island DS as they did in the original, except they did not carry bombs and their laugh is much, much higher pitched. 5 of them, one carrying a Red Coin, 2 with 1-ups, and 2 with Coins, appeared in the Island Museum. It may seem like they were in the aerial exhibit, but they were actually in the Shy Guy exhibit.

Super Mario series

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS

Fly Guys as they appeared in Super Mario 64.

In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, Fly Guys appear in Shifting Sand Land. Here, they are called Fire Guys. These ones spit fireballs at him trying to make the plumber fall onto the quicksand. They also appear in Tiny-Huge Island and Snowman's Land. They can also dive in to try and hit the plumber. A single Fly Guy appears on Tall Tall Mountain next to Ukiki. A single one also appears in Rainbow Cruise. These are the only games where they have the ability to produce flames. If Mario stomps a Fly Guy in Super Mario 64, he will Spin Jump high up into the air. This allows him to reach high places. The Fly Guys share this effect with the Spindrifts.

Mario Party series

Fly Guys have been noted for some important roles in the Mario Party series; for example, Fly Guy is responsible for Duel mini-games in Mario Party 5. A secret technique with the mic causes Fly guys to fly across the menu screen in Mario Party 6. However, they only appear through cameos. Two Fly Guys also appear on the game cover's boxart of Mario Party 8 (as seen at the top of the page). They also appear in the mini-game King of the Thrill, where they carry the losing team as seen in the background. Additionally, in the same mini-game, if two characters fall off at the same time during a fight, a Fly Guy will carry the character who falls off just after the other falls off up to the top platform for the next part of the fight (or for the victory if the character falls off during the last part of the mini-game). Two Fly Guys are also seen holding the 8000 points sign in Test for the Best.Fly Guy are also seen holding balls in Mario Party 8.

Mario Tennis series

Fly Guy debuted in the Mario Tennis series with Mario Power Tennis, as a secret character known for his trickiness. He could be unlocked by beating the Mushroom Cup, the Flower Cup and Star Cup in singles. His Offensive Power Shot is the Tornado Twist, which envelopes the returning player in a whirlwind while messing up controls, and his Defensive Power Shot is the Tornado Return, which he uses a whirlwind to return the ball from anywhere.

Mario & Luigi series

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Template:Pitenemy Fly Guys had minor roles in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, appearing as enemies in Star Hill. They carried time bombs and every attack of theirs uses it. The number on the bomb varies 3, 2, 1, and 0 where it explodes and hurts the victim even more. The first attack the evil menace flies into the air over a bro. and drops it. Halfway in the top screen means Luigi, all the way top means Mario. It can be countered with the hammer. Every counter or hit makes the bomb lose one number. If it hits zero it will explode in the Fly Guy's hand and damage it. If the Fly Guy survives, it'll get a new bomb. The other attack is rocking back and forth and then throw it. The number of times it rocks depends on who gets hit. If it rocks an odd number of times or immediately throws it, it will roll towards Luigi, and if it rocks an even number of times, it will roll towards Mario. This can only be dodged by jumping.

They also appeared if the player caused a Boom Guy to lose its launcher. A pair of red Fly Guys will drop a new one on its head. The same thing applies for Elite Boom Guys except the Fly Guys are blue. Fly Guys also appear when a Handfake uses a Bowser cut-out attack, where it carries a flame cut-out and flies towards Luigi to attempt to damage him (Boo is used to attack Mario).

Fly Guy appeared in Mario Hoops 3-on-3 as a playable tricky character. Its special shot is the Thunder Shot, which can be used if the player taps an "S" shape (in other words, a reflected "Z" shape).

Super Smash Bros. series

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Fly Guys were featured in the Yoshi's Island stage. They are usually holding some kind of food. If they are attacked, they will drop the food they are holding and fly away. A Fly Guy also appeared as a Sticker, depicting its artwork from Mario Power Tennis.
