An ON/OFF Switch (alternatively ON/OFF switch[1] or On/Off Switch[2]), also known as an ON Block,[3] an ON/OFF Block,[4] or simply a Switch,[5] is a stationary object that first appears in Super Mario World.
History
Super Mario World / Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2
In Super Mario World and its reissue, an ON/OFF Switch can be used by Mario or Luigi either to change the path that a Pulley Lift is traveling on or, in #4 Ludwig's Castle, to toggle the direction in which the falling ceiling is moving. The switches can be turned on or off by either jumping against them from below, whirling Caped Mario's cape next to them, or throwing an object, such as a Koopa Shell, at them. Since the player can use the cape to activate a block by hitting it multiple times in succession, toggling an ON/OFF Switch that way does not guarantee that it will end up in the state intended by the player. Apart from #4 Ludwig's Castle, ON/OFF Switches are mostly found in the levels Donut Plains 3 (where they first appear) and Way Cool, where the switches are abundant. They are sometimes guarded by a Fuzzy.
Super Mario Maker 2
In Super Mario Maker 2, ON/OFF Switches appear as a usable course element. Compared to their original appearance in Super Mario World, they have a more saturated red and blue color scheme in all game styles, and the "ON" and "OFF" now flash. When hit, they can change the direction of Y-shaped track intersections, toggle the visibility of red and blue Dotted-Line Blocks, change the direction of red or blue Conveyor Belts, and change the radius of light around objects in the night Ghost House and night Underwater course styles.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
ON/OFF Switches return in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, where they retain their ability to activate Dotted-Line Blocks, switch the direction of tracks, and lower the radius of light around objects. They can also switch the direction that red and blue Zip Tracks travel in, similarly to how they affected Conveyor Belts in Super Mario Maker 2. All of these attributes are displayed prominently in the level Color-Switch Dungeon.

Two-item combos
When a player hits an ON/OFF Switch, the red and blue blocks will swap. You can use these sneaky switches to set up traps. You can even combine two items in a cool way. For example, you can create two conveyor belts, then connect an ON/OFF Switch to make a puzzling challenge for the player. When the switch is hit, the conveyor belt changes direction. Talk about a trick combo![6]
