“Crumpled! Can't move!”
Battle text, Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Crumpled is a common status effect found in the Paper Mario series and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. The crumpled status effect prevents Mario or enemies from attacking or defending and causes affected characters to take double damage from attacks.

The crumpled status condition first appears in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. POW Blocks may inflict the crumpled status condition on enemies when used. Enemies such as Pokeys, Tower Power Pokey, and Bowser are able to inflict the crumpled status condition on Mario. In turn, if a spiked enemy is crumpled, Mario can stomp on the crumpled enemy without the need of an Iron Jump or Super Boot sticker.

The crumpled status returns in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, where it only affects the paper characters in the game. It functions the same way as in Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

The crumpled status effect returns in Paper Mario: Color Splash, retaining its effects from its previous appearances. The crumpled status condition can affect Mario, enemies, and the Toad Conductor on the Sunset Express. POW Blocks have a chance of inflicting the status condition on enemies when used.
