Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games is a sports title for the Nintendo 3DS with a Wii version of the game released as well. Both games make up the third installment of the Mario & Sonic series, which take place in London, home of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games the third installment of the Mario & Sonic series, taking place in London, the host city for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Much like the other games in the series, the game is largely based around the 56 minigame-like Events, the most featured in a single installment in the series' history, with various modes allowing for the events to be played in different formats such as medleys and offering both single and multiple cartridge multiplayer for the mode. In addition to this, the game features a new Story Mode, centered around a plot based on Bowser and Dr. Eggman  trying to stop the Olympic Games taking place using the Phantasmal Fog, in which the player completes various event challenges to progress. The game also has a number of collectibles in the form of badges, and also allows the player to view online leaderboards of records for certain events. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games marks the first installment of the series released on the Nintendo 3DS, and was released roughly three months after its home console counterpart on the Wii.

The game could be played over Nintendo Network; however, the service was terminated on April 8, 2024, making the game no longer playable online.<ref name=Shutdown> {{cite|author=@NintendoAmerica|date=October 4, 2023|title=As of early April 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end service for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software. In the 3DS version of the game, there are a total of 20 playable characters (the character roster being identical to the one featured in the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games). However, only certain characters can play certain events. These characters are identified in five different classes and get their own storyline. Some characters can compete in other events that they would not normally be playable in Story Mode.

Heroes Group
Gameplay
*Mario
Olympic Mode
*Sonic the Hedgehog
Olympic Mode is the main mode within the game, and is based around playing the game's various events. Much like the other games in the series, each event is structured like a short minigame based on an Olympic event, where a winner is determined from the four entrants. Each event has a unique objective and control scheme, menaing that different events have varying lengths and difficulties. The mode can be played in both single player and multiplayer.
*Luigi
Highlight Match
*Miles "Tails" Prower
In this mode, the player plays a single match of an event using the standard rules. For each event, the player an select a COM Level which determines the difficulty of the computer-controlled opponents from Easy, Normal and Hard. A medal can be earned for each COM level in every event, however earning a medal at a higher difficulty level will also earn the medal for lower ones. For example, earning a gold medal at normal COM level will also earn the gold medal for easy if the player does not already have the medal. The player can select their character for each event from the four available for the entry character class, with each event being assigned one of the five character groups. After completing each event, an award ceremony is held, during which the final placements of all of the characters are shown on a podium. If two characters tie for a position in an event, through having the same number of points for example, they will both appear on the podium in their respective position. For events in which the player controls two or four characters as a team, only the players' characters will appear on the podium and will do their victory animation for their placement. The characters will appear on a podium even if they place fourth in the event, whereas only those in the top three stand on the podium for single character events, with the fourth place character off to the side. After the awards ceremony, the player is given the options to replay the event, choose a different event to play or return to the main menu.

Challengers Group
Certain events require the player to select a team of either two or four characters to play the event. For these events, extra teams made up of non-playable characters are added for the event. In two-character team events, the extra teams are a pair of Chao and a pair of Koopa Troopas. The teams never physically appear in the events, and in events where the player is required to directly compete against a COM team rather than using a score to determine the rankings, the player can only place first or second in the event as the Koopa Troopa and Chao teams will always place third and fourth. For the events that require the player to use all of the characters in the class, the COM teams will be made up of green, yellow and blue Shy Guys. The Shy Guys only physically appear in 4x100m Relay, with their times and scores being used for the other events of the type.
*Yoshi
*Shadow the Hedgehog
*Bowser Jr.
*Silver the Hedgehog

Girls Group
Medley Match
*Princess Peach
In Medley Match mode, the player can compete in medleys made up of several different Olympic events to earn points, aiming to score more points than their opponents. For each event, the player will receive a number of points based on their placement in it, winning 10 points for first place, 6 points for second place, 4 points for third place and 2 points for fourth place.
*Amy Rose
*Princess Daisy
*Blaze the Cat

Wild Ones Group
In this mode, certain events are always treated as bonus events, giving them slightly different rules and awarding different point scores at the end of the event, mainly based on the score that the player achieved. The following events are treated as bonus events:
*Bowser
*Marathon- Only a single round of the event is played, with the score being determined by the water bottle that the player grabs. The characters are ordered in the reverse order of their current overall placement, such that fourth place is in the lead while first place is at the back. Collecting the rainbow colored water bottle scores the player 15 points, the blue water bottle scores 10 points, the white water bottles score 5 points each and failing to collect any of the water bottles awards the player 0 points.
*Knuckles the Echidna
*Basketball- The player will have a short practice session with a cursor before being able to make a single shot without the cursor to determine their point score for the event. The color of ball that the player receives depends on their placement in the medley, with higher ranked players receiving worse balls than the higher ranked ones. White and orange balls are worth 5 points, blue balls are worth 10 points, and rainbow colored balls are worth 15 points.
*Donkey Kong
*Handball- The event is played as normal with ten shots thrown by the Egg Pawns, and the type of balls thrown depending on the player's placement, with lower-ranked players receiving more multiple point scoring balls than those in higher positions.
*Vector the Crocodile
*Football- The event is played mostly as normal with only five shots thrown by the Shy Guys, and different types of balls thrown depending on the players' placement, with players in low positions receiving more multiple point scoring balls than those in high positions.
*Keirin- The characters start the event with advantages based on their placement, with the fourth placed character starting further ahead than the third place character and so on. The event plays as normal, but scores are awarded so that first places gets 15 points, second place gets 10 points, third place gets 5 points, and fourth place does not receive any.
Upon creating a new file, the player completes the Warm-Up Medley consisting of three events, 100m, 100m Freestyle and Judo. Any records set during this medley do not count, and the player cannot see the results of the events. This medley is not available in the game afterwards.

Tricksters Group
There are two ways to play Medley Match, standard mode and quick mode. Standard allows players to choose a character from each of the groups, as well as allowing them to set and select a group of favorite characters. When playing two-person medleys, the second character will be randomly picked, and when playing team medleys the player's selected character will be the lead character. Each event shows the player the instructions screen before playing, and also provides intermittent screens between events showing each player's current position, point increases and position changes and often features commentary from Toad, Wenlock and a Chao about recent occurrences. In the quick mode, all of these things are absent, with the player receiving a random selection of characters and their current position in the medley and number of points being displayed in the bottom right of the Touch Screen during the events. The quick mode is the only mode in the game where the main instructions screen of an event can be fully skipped.
*Wario
London Games
*Dr. Eggman
London Games mainly consists of medleys based on a selection of events from a specific class, but also features some medleys that are a combination of classes or based on the team size instead.

Party Mix
Opening
Party Mix medleys function differently to other medley types, as while there are three different individual medleys, all of them use a randomized selection of single character events. All three Party Mix medleys are available at the start of the game, with the only differences being the number of events in each and the amount of points awarded for the Party Mix Awards event. The main difference to Party Mix medleys is the addition of Party News events, which are various randomly occurring events in the form of a news broadcast hosted by Omochao that appear at various times in the medley and often award players bonus points. The Party News events that can occur are:
Bowser and Dr. Eggman watch over London from the inside of Elizabeth Tower, but the doctor tells Bowser they're already starting the 2012 Olympics and they haven't got their invitations yet. They believe the other athletes were intimidated and tried to keep them excluded. Bowser suggests that he could use his new machine. Dr. Eggman agrees and puts a mysterious pot in side of it and presses the start button. Then, colorful fog covers all over London.
*Event Selection: A randomly selected human player chooses between four event types, including Timing games, Microphone games, Judgment games, Finesse games, Rhythm games, Flexibility games, Do-or-Die games, Wrist workout games, Repetition games, Balance games, and Intelligence games. An event is selected from the player's chosen category and played as the next event. During this Party News event, a picture is taken of the player choosing the event and is used to announce the chosen Olympic event.
*Captain Drake's lost treasure: The lost treasure of Francis Drake is found, and players take it in turn to select a random chest that includes a number of bonus points. The number of points varies between players to even the scores such that players in lower positions will receive more points than those in higher positions, and the other players will be able to see how many points are in the choosing player's chests.
*Bonus Update!: Announces all of the player's current ranks and the upcoming bonus events before they are played.
*Party Mix Awards!: Handed out at the end of each medley, awarding players points for the most and least points earned in a certain event class, 10 and 15 points respectively for Party Mix 10 Medley in one class, 15 and 20 for Party Mix 15 Medley in two classes and 20 and 25 for Party Mix 20 Medley in two classes. This Party News event also makes use of the camera when revealing players that won awards and before announcing the final results, with computers receiving one of a number of images to represent them.

As the referees are prepping everything, a colored fog rolls in. Toad and Omochao end up separated. Toad runs into and is attacked by what appears to be Mario and Sonic while Bowser and Dr. Eggman laugh in victory.
Custom
Custom Medleys consist of medleys that the player has made using the Make an Event Medley mode or traded with another player using the Trade an Event Medley function. The player can create up to twenty medleys, with the options of making medleys with five single character events or three two or four-character team events. The player can store up to twenty medleys across all types, and is also able to name their medley. Custom medleys have a rarity rating, which is rated from 1 to 10 stars, which is based on both the average of each event's Best Event Ranking from 1 to 57, and a "hidden value" that takes the ratio of the average score of the events in the medley to the average score of all 57 events in the game. An event's Best Event Ranking is determined by three attributes:
*Frequency: Determined by how many times the player has played the event. In the Play Data section of the Record Log, the player can check which 5 events the player has played the most.
*Difficulty: The average level of COM opponents that the player competes against in the event. This attribute will change even if the player cannot compete against a COM player or team because of the number of players or the selected event.
*Performance: The average finishing position of the player in the event.
The three attributes determines a score for the event used to determine the Best Event ranking, which is shown to the player while making their medley. By picking events with a lower number ranking (the lower this number, the better the player is at an event), the rarity rating for the event will increase. The ranking does not take into account events being in other classes though, meaning that if a player's top events are distributed over single character, double character and quadruple character events, the maximum rarity rating of ten cannot be obtained unless the player changes their top ranked events by repeatedly playing and winning the events in either Highlight Match, Medley Match, or Story Mode. A "hidden value" is also another factor of determining the rarity rating, which is the ratio of the average score of the events in the medley to the average score of all 57 events in the game. When a player plays an event, this "hidden value" will increase very rapidly for medleys containing the event, and decrease very slowly for medleys not containing the event. This "hidden value" will have an effect on the rarity rating given to a medley containing certain events.

Heroes Story, Part 1
When playing multiplayer, the medleys available in the Custom list are based off medleys in the host's list, and only the host can win badges for winning a medley with a certain rarity rating. The rarity of the medley does not change once a medley is created and the player must recreate the medley to determine if the rarity rating has changed. The COM Level that the player competes against in a custom medley does not affect whether a badge will be won for winning a custom medley with a specific rarity rating.

The night before the games, Sonic and Tails are exploring London when a strange red fog rolls in. While in the fog, they are confronted by foggy impostors of Mario and Luigi, who try to impede them from investigating by challenging them to an event. Sonic and Tails win and the clones disappear. They later follow Boo and meet King Boo, who challenges them to a Badminton-Doubles event. They defeat them in the event and King Boo and Boo escape while Sonic destroys the machine. Sonic and Tails go off to rest for the night.

The next day, Mario and Luigi find Toad, who is apprehensive towards Mario after what he went through with the foggy impostors at the Stadium and find out that the fog is colored blue. They then encounter clones of Sonic and Tails. The latter challenges the former to an event and disappear after their loss. The Mario Bros. rush through the fog. Toad and Omochao find Dry Bowser and Dry Bones and mistake them for the brothers. Fortunately the duo arrive to be challenged to a Sailing 470: Pair event. They then defeat them and the skeletal villains escape the Stadium while the winners destroy the fog machine. Noticing fog in Hyde Park, Toad and bros go to find Princess Peach.
Multiplayer
The Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games offers both local and download play multiplayer for up to four players. Download play gives the players the option to compete in both highlight match and event medleys, controlled by the host. During this mode, after completing an event, the usual option to quit is replaced with the option to disconnect the other players.

Girls Story
In Local Play, both Highlight Match and Medley Match are played as normal, although with only the host being able to make selections. All records, including those set by a team, can be saved in Local Play.
At Hyde Park, Daisy and Amy are wandering around and find the impostors of Peach and Blaze. They are challenged to an event where they defeat them. More impostors come and knockout the confused Daisy and Amy.

Later on, Peach and Blaze defeat the impostors that attacked Amy and Daisy and save them. When a purple Toad recalls seeing a white bat in an area nearby, they find the figure to be Rouge. In a strange manner, Rouge challenges Peach to a 100m Backstroke event where the princess defeats her. After her loss, Rouge comes to her senses and has no recollection of what happened. Rouge leads the girls out to the fog machine. Afterwards, Toad, Mario, and Luigi arrive to see they are okay. Rouge recalls breathing in the fog and that someone told her to trap them in it. She recalls it was at the British Museum and the being was Eggman. The five females stay behind while Mario and Luigi go with Toad to the museum.
In Download Play, the player can play Highlight Match, in which only the host player can select the events, or Medley Match, in which only a "Party Mix Demo DL Medley" is available, in which all players play all of the events as different colors of Yoshi. Download play also features some technical restrictions, including character sound effects being removed and some music being changed, certain features being removed, the top screen becoming inactive at some points, and data such as records not being saved.

Challengers Story
The way that teams are set up in multiplayer also changes depending on the number of characters playing, taking advantage of the number of players to allow events to be played in different ways. To accommodate for this, certain events make use of control changes to allow for more of the players to be playing simultaneously. When two players are using the mode, they will automatically be taken to the final in tournament based events, and will always be paired up against COM characters in 2-character events. For three or more players, the host sets the teams, with a COM being used to fill in an extra member if required. For events that make use of a four character team, the set up of the players will also vary. If four players are connected, then each selects a character and the team order runs with the player numbers. For some events, if there is an incomplete team of human players, COMs can be used to fill the remaining team slots. However in events where this is not possible, certain players will take multiple characters. With two players, each player selects two characters each and alternates control throughout the event, and with three characters, player 1 will also take control of the fourth character.
After last night, Sonic and Tails discover more fog at the London Bridge. They encounter Yoshi and try to help him out. Then, Shadow and Silver impostors appear. Agitated  by their behavior, Yoshi challenges them to an event. After Yoshi defeats them, they disappear and the real Shadow and Silver appear. Then, somebody comes speeding past with the three hedgehogs in pursuit. The speedster turns out to be Jet the Hawk. After rudely declining to help them and attempting to take the hidden machine, Shadow challenges him to a 3,000m Steeplechase match. After being defeated, Jet promises to help out when they discover the machine. He tries to break it until they hear Bowser's voice. Bowser Jr. reveals himself next to the machine and that he was the one doing his father's voice by taking a breath of the fog. After he's downgraded for habit of living in his father's shadow, Junior challenges the other three Challengers to an event, promising to tell them where Bowser is when they win. After he's beaten and Shadow destroys the machine, Bowser Jr. breaks his word and leaves after slipping out Bowser and Eggman's alliance. While Yoshi chases him down, Shadow suggests they split up to comb different areas; with Sonic and Tails taking the British Museum.

Heroes Story, Part 2
Story Mode
In the Story Mode, players play through a story split into several episodes. Each episode consists of an opening and closing cutscene, with a number of challenges that must be completed in between them to unlock the next part of the story. The cutscenes can be skipped using the start button, and also feature dialogue which the player can page through by pressing the A Button. The first cutscene usually sets up the challenges, occasionally mentioning specific events that the player will play. Each episode can have up to seven challenges, which are either single events or medleys of three or five events. The events featured will often be adjusted for the mode, sometimes featuring fewer specific and occasionally exclusive opponents, with medley challenges working the same way as in medley mode, though occasionally with adjusted point values based on the number of opponents. Not every challenge is required to be completed for every episode, as episodes with multiple challenges will sometimes specify a smaller number of challenges that need to be completed in order to progress, and the player can complete any of the available challenges to fill this quota. The difficulty of the opponents gradually increase throughout the Story Mode, with the opponents being easy difficulty up to A Rainbow In Fog, where the first set of normal opponents appear. Normal opponents appear up until the end of the main story, and hard opponents then appear in all of the bonus episodes.
At the British Museum, Mario, Luigi, Toad, Sonic, and Tails meet up. The heroes then find returning impostors of themselves and beat them in an event. After more searching, they discover Dr. Eggman Nega after Toad bumps into him and challenge him and his Shy Guys to a 4x100m Relay where he is defeated. He then disappears while Mario and Sonic destroy the machine he was guarding. They then search the museum for sources about the fog where they discover that it's called the Phantasmal Fog and was stolen by the legendary pirate, William Kidd 300 years ago. Espio the Chameleon appears and tells them Bowser and Eggman are still causing trouble at different venues. Charmy Bee directs them all in different directions. Sonic goes solo while the other heroes pair up with the referees.

Wild Ones Story
When first starting the mode, The Night Before cutscene is the first episode unlocked, and must be watched to unlock the first pair of episodes with challenges, Stadium Blues and Sonic Arrives. Completing each episode unlocks another initially, with the Mario episodes leading into the Girls ones, and the Sonic ones leading into Challengers. Once both The Mysterious Thief and Enter Bowser?! are completed, Mario and Sonic is unlocked, and completing this episode then unlocks The Secret of the Fog. After completing the Secret of the Fog, Waluigi's Ambition, Wario's Scheme, The Banana Incident and Corner the Koopa King! are all unlocked. Waluigi's Ambition and Wario's Scheme must both be completed to unlock Stop Dr. Eggman!, and completing it along with The Banana Incident and Corner the Koopa King! unlocks the Clear Skies Again cutscene. After watching this, each episode is unlocked sequentially until the completion of Junior Triumphant!, which unlocks both Bowser's Blues and Dr. Eggman's Robots. Both the Wild Ones Bonus Story and Tricksters Bonus story must be completed in their entirety to unlock the Girls Bonus episodes, with Mario's Defeat?! and The Fog Returns' completion unlocking An Innocent Request. The final two episodes are then unlocked sequentially.
At the Wrestling Stadium, Donkey Kong has finished a workout and was about to enjoy a banana, when Espio and Tails meet him to warn about the rampage of E-123 Omega. The robot arrives and crashes into him. Shaking this off, Donkey Kong is uninterested in Omega's challenge at first, but reconsiders when he realizes Omega had ruined his banana. They do a Wrestling-Freestyle Match where DK wins. Tails discovers that Eggman had put a chip in him that caused him to go rampant. Omega reactivates and forgets everything that happened, but apologizes to DK. He promises to help out and he goes with Espio and Tails.

Later on, Sonic arrives at the Volleyball court and narrowly dodges an ambush by Bowser. Knuckles and Vector arrive and explain Amy asked them to check out the area. They challenges the Koopa King to an event. They defeat and corner him and Knuckles crushes his machine. Sonic moves on while his powerhouse friends interrogate Bowser.
The mode also offers players a Clear Assist option, which allows them to complete a challenge in the episode after failing it enough times. This allows the player to progress through the story, but will mark the episodes cleared in this way with a gray banner until challenges that the player used Clear Assist on are properly completed by the player. Even if the player completes the required number of episodes for the challenge without Clear Assist, if one or more challenges is finished with the Clear Assist the episode will be marked with a gray banner. Episodes that have optional challenges will marked as cleared with a white banner if not all of the challenges have been completed, and episodes where every challenge has been completed regardless of whether it was compulsory will be marked as clear with a gold banner.

Record Log
Play Data
In this mode, the player can view data based on their gameplay.
View Play Data
In the View Play Data option, the player can see their records for the forty events in the game that allow for records to be recorded, as well as the characters used to obtain the records. If both files have play data the, player is able to compare the records of the first and second file in this mode.

Waluigi and Wario meet up and confront the scientist and his creation while Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Charmy sneak up on them and see what they are doing. Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic challenge Wario and Waluigi to a match where Wario and Waluigi win. Wario destroys the real and final machine as Eggman and Metal Sonic collapse in defeat. Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Charmy congratulate them as they move on while the Wario and Waluigi volunteer to keep an eye on the villains, intending to resolve their unfinished business.
Play Data Top 5's
In the Play Data Top 5'ssic, the player can view the top 5 for Best Event, Best Controls, Most Played and Best Genre for the file. The Best Event shows the events that have the highest in-game ranking as used to calculate the rarity of event medleys, the Best Controls details the control scheme in which the player performs the best, the Most Played lists the events that the player has competed in the most frequently, and the Best Genre is the type of game that the player performs the best in. The mode also displays the player's current play time for the file.

Clear Skies Again
Collection
The heroes get together again at the main stadium, and tell each other that all the fog machines were destroyed, with help from members of the Tricksters and Wild Ones. Everyone rejoices because the opening ceremony can continue.
In the Collection, the player can earn and view several types of the game's collectibles.
Medal Collection
The player can view their medal collection, which shows an overview of the medals achieved for each event based on their best medal earned on the highest game level. For example, if the player has earned a bronze medal for the normal difficulty, but a gold medal for the easy difficulty, then the bronze medal will be displayed rather than the gold one. However, if no medals have been earned for the higher difficulty rating, then the best medal for the difficulty below is displayed instead- so if a silver medal has been earned on the normal difficulty, but no medal has been earned for the hard difficulty, then the silver medal will be displayed. If no medals have been earned for an event yet, then the medal case for that event appears empty. Each medal is accompanied by an image for the type of sport for which it was obtained, and can be selected to view the medals earned at all game levels in the event.

Back at the wrestling stadium, Knuckles backs Bowser into a corner and punches him, only to reveal it is a fake, much to his and Vector's confusion. The same situation happens when Wario and Waluigi corner Dr. Eggman, who suddenly disappears as well, much to their dismay.
Badge Machine
In this mode, the player can use tickets earned in-game for competing in events and playing various events to spin the badge machine and collect various badges in the game. The number of tickets that the player has earned is only shown when viewing the machine and are given no indication that they are earned when playing in other modes. A maximum of 999 tickets can be held at once. A badge can be earned by using the stylus to spin the handle onscreen, or by pressing the A Button. 160 different badges can be obtained from the machine, distributed across three different rarities- there are 100 common badges of various objects that come in blue capsules, 40 uncommon badges that come in yellow capsules of minor Mario and Sonic characters, plus six of the London 2012 Olympic mascot Wenlock, and then 20 rare badges of the athlete characters that come in pink capsules. Badges with higher rarities have a higher background, with the rare badges appearing with an exclusive square shape. Each badge can be collected multiple times, with the number obtained also recorded. The player can also press the Y Button as a shortcut to their badge collection.

In Big Ben, Dr. Eggman and Bowser are happy that they have everyone fooled. The doctor then goes to his machine and resolves to cover London in fog again, but with ten times the strength. Bowser agrees with this plan. After pressing the button, fog spreads very quickly throughout the room. The top of the machine breaks and more fog spews out rapidly. It surrounds Bowser and Dr. Eggman, who feel power welling up within them. The two evil doers laugh as lots of rainbow fog spews from the Big Ben.
View Badges
In this mode, the player can view the badges that they have collected from the badge machine, as well as another forty that can only be unlocked for completing in-game criteria. Of this forty, 20 are treated as the rare square badges, and the other 20 are uncommon. Each of these badges can only be earned once. The badges are grouped into pages based on their rarity and designs. The player can also set any badge that they have earned to appear on their profile in this mode by either touching the badge or pressing the A button when it is selected. The player can press the Y Button in this mode as a shortcut to the badge machine, as well as being able to view their current number of tickets.

Heroes Story, Part 3
Online Rankings
After the united heroes save Cream the Rabbit from more of their foggy clones, Omega recalls something at Stonehenge. At Stonehenge, they and Toad hear Magikoopa's voice as he challenges Sonic to a BMX match. The blue hedgehog defeats him causing the sneaky wizard to run away after flinging Omega into Big the Cat. Omega recalls that when he was corrupted, he was asked to transport the urn containing the fog to Eggman's lair at Big Ben. After finding the seal, they head over there. After defeating more clones, the heroes advance to the lair while Omega and a weakened Toad head back to the stadium.
In this mode, the player can compare their rankings in the 23 single character events that have non-integer records to other players around the world via the internet. The player can upload and update their own records in the mode. The player will be able to see their own ranking in the global leaderboards, as well as that of the four players directly above them and the five directly below, the overall top ten in the world and their ranking compared to any friends that have the game. For each record, the player can view the player's rank, set flag, profile star rating and title, file name, badge, character used to obtain the record and the record itself. When entering the mode, the player is also given an indication of any events that they have improved their record on since last updating their position in the rankings.

At the Factory, Mario, Luigi, Sonic, and Tails arrive to defeat Bowser and Eggman only to find they are greatly powered by the Phantasmal Fog dwelling in them. Toad then uses the radio communicator to talk to Tails and tells him that everywhere else is cleared up thanks to the other athletes, opponents, and referees and the Olympic Games are up to them. The quartet face the powered-up Bowser and Eggman and defeat them. While Luigi and Tails hold the villains off, Mario and Sonic destroy the machine and seal the fog in the urn. Disappointed, Bowser and Eggman complain how they will never be in the Olympics. Toad says that their names are on the competitor list. While wondering why they have not gotten their invitations yet, Toad explains they can bring their ID. The two villains are exasperated at this misunderstanding and realize they do not have their ID's but Tails says Mario and Sonic can vouch for the sheepish pair.

Shadow and Silver arrive to defeat them, but Junior, flying overhead, accidentally falls off of his Bullet Bill and destroys both robots by landing on them. The two Chao are grateful and the two hedgehogs are impressed. Wanting to see how strong he really is, they challenge Jr. to a 2-on-1 Olympic event, which Jr. wins. Arriving at the stadium, Junior and the Goomba see Dr. Eggman measuring Metal Sonic's time running around the track. Junior challenges Metal Sonic to an event. Thinking this would be perfect practice for the robot, Eggman agrees, on the condition that Junior becomes in debt if he loses. Junior accepts, telling Eggman that if he wins, he has to tell his father of his victory. With that, the child and robot set off. Jr. eventually wins. Eggman tries to examine Junior to see what he needs to do to upgrade Metal Sonic, but Junior angrily stops him, demanding a drink and snack in exchange for Eggman trying to con him. The scientist reluctantly agrees.

Tricksters
Bowser angrily stomps through London, followed by Goomba, Lakitu, and Magikoopa. His minions state wrong facts to him. Magikoopa, believing he's still upset over what happened in Vancouver, offers to use his magic to keep Mario and his friends out of the games, but this just agitates Bowser further. The minions decide to cheer him up by secretly letting him win some Olympic events against the other Wild Ones the next day. Their first target is Donkey Kong. Magikoopa promises a pile of bananas in exchange for taking Bowser on in an event, but when the ape agrees, the wizard summons a Thwomp to fall on DK, making him dizzy and less likely to win. Bowser arrives and wins against DK. Behind his back, however, Magikoopa makes it up to DK by getting him the bananas that were promised.

Later, the Magikoopa, as well as the Lakitu and a Dry Bones, somehow convince Knuckles and Vector to rendezvous. To convince them to fight, the Magikoopa uses his magic to make the Lakitu and Dry Bones to look like Charmy and Espio, respectively. The powerhouse duo notice the two fake members acting funny, but agree to fight Bowser. The Magikoopa then summons giant versions of a Chain Chomp and Piranha Plant to bite Knuckles and Vector, respectively. Similar to DK, this makes the two dazed and less likely to win. After Bowser defeats them, the Goomba (who had led Bowser to the arena) quickly escorts him out before Knuckles and Vector, held back back by the still disguised Lakitu and Dry Bones, ask too many questions.

For Bowser's last false victory, the minions plan to make Mario lose in a tennis game. Unfortunately, Boo failed to trick Mario into coming to the court because Mario was too smart to be tricked and he saw through the plan. After the other minions come, Dry Bones distracts Bowser while the other minions think of a plan. The Magikoopa decides he'll have to transform one of them into Mario. Dry Bones can't do it because he is talking to Bowser and only speaks in "clacks", neither Boo or Lakitu can do it because they float, and they can't bring in a Shy Guy. Goomba is terrified to pretend to be Mario, but agrees when Bowser's patience is wearing thin. Bowser challenges "Mario" to a game of tennis and wins. After the match, Bowser Jr. arrives and is happy that his father won and says he wants to be just like him, while the minions celebrate over the success of their plan. Bowser notices that his minions are finally satisfied that he is back to his old self, as it turned out he had a toothache.
As well as the athlete characters, the game also features a cast of supporting characters and species from the Super Mario and Sonic franchises that perform a variety of roles within the game, including forming parts of the crowd, competing as opponents in or refereeing events and serving as rivals or allies in the Story Mode. The game also introduces one entirely new species in the form of the imposters that are created by Dr. Eggman in the game's Story Mode.

In his secret headquarters inside Big Ben, Eggman defeats Metal Sonic in a match of Taekwondo. He is unsure of what to do to upgrade his creation. His other robot minions, Orbot and Cubot, see Waluigi on the monitors and suggest him for practice. They confront Waluigi and convince him to battle, saying it would make good practice for defeating Luigi in the Olympics. Metal Sonic wins with Eggman deducing that Metal Sonic possesses speed, but not strength.

The robots come across Wario and ask him to challenge Metal Sonic so that the robot may go against Wario's strength. However, defeating Mario isn't good enough for Wario, so he and Eggman settle on a bet: if Wario wins, Orbot and Cubot come work for him; if Metal Sonic wins, Wario has to give Eggman something of his. Metal Sonic emerges victorious, so Wario gives Eggman an old urn he got from an antique shop, claiming that it is magic. Eggman seems to recognize it and accepts it.

Back in his headquarters, Eggman places the urn inside a machine. The machine slightly unseals the lid on the urn and gray fog pours into the room. Some of this fog takes the shape of Sonic and Eggman challenges it to an event. Eggman appears victorious and the Sonic impostor vanishes into thin air. Eggman explains to his minions that this urn contains the legendary Phantasmal Fog, stolen 300 years ago by the legendary pirate William Kidd. The urn eventually ended up in the British Museum, where it was recently stolen. He says the fog shapes into whoever the person in it is thinking about, explaining the impostors in the main story. Eggman resolves to completely unseal the urn after he and Metal Sonic are done training for the Olympics.

At Hyde Park Peach, Amy, Blaze, and three Toads are setting up the invitations for all of the athletes, however Amy suggests she take Sonic's invitation to him personally but the others don't want Amy to go and insist that she stay and help the others work. However, after more begging, Blaze suggests that if Amy can beat her in a competition she will let her go. Then, after Amy beats her, Blaze accidentally scatters the invitations. Amy then decides to stay.

After Peach wins, they all go out for a break. But when they return, the wind had knocked off all of the invitations to the ground. After they pick them all up they realize that they are missing Bowser's and Eggman's invitations, so they make new, detailed better ones.

Later, Peach and Amy meet Bowser and Eggman in the park and end up playing a round of Beach Volleyball. After they win, they go fetch their invitations, but at the same moment the Toads go to deliver them and they drop Eggman and Bowser's next to them. Bowser and Eggman look at how well it's written and think that the pink girls were writing love letters to Sonic and Mario. Confiscating them, Bowser and Eggman go off together looking around London before they do something evil. The girls assume that Bowser and Eggman took their invitations themselves, so they all decide to go out shopping together before the Olympic Games start.

The last part states after sightseeing, Bowser and Eggman forget about the invites. The fourth wall is broken when it says that the player is the only one who fully understands the misunderstanding that led Bowser and Doctor Eggman to fog up London.
Olympic Mode
There are two ways to play the Olympic Mode. Each mode allows up to 4 players.
Highlight Match
This is more like the Single Match mode in the Wii version of the game. 4 players compete or co-operate in an event that is selected by the host. After selecting an event and the difficulty of the computers (COM Level), each player chooses 1 character to use from one predetermined category of the 5 total (Heroes, Girls, Wild Ones, Tricksters & Challengers).
The players play the event according to its rules. After an event, a medal is given to the player as long as the player doesn't get 4th place. If two or more players/teams tie for a position, the same medals are given, unlike the other handheld titles. After an event, the player can choose to play the same event, change the event or quit the game (this is shown as Disconnect in case of multiplayer).
When playing in Free-for-All events that require players to split into pairs
The seeding is determined randomly, and one player plays against the other player in their pair. After the semifinals have ended, the winners play against each other for 1st and 2nd place and the losers play against each other for 3rd and 4th place.
Note that the players will not see who will duel up against until the semifinals have started.
In Case of Team Events
To ensure that there are always 4 teams in an event, extra COM-controlled teams are added based off how many players are on a team.
*With 2 members per team - There are 2 extra COM-controlled teams. The first COM-controlled team are a team of Koopas while the second COM-controlled team are a team of Chao.
**The extra COM-controlled teams do not appear in any event.
**In case of tournament-based matches, the extra COM-controlled teams will always lose the semifinals.
**In the case of Sailing - 470 (Pair), the extra COM-controlled teams will always place 3rd and 4th.
*With 4 members per team - All 4 characters from that group compete against the 3 COM-controlled teams that are all Shy Guys of a specific color relating to their team number.
**The COM-controlled teams of Shy Guy only appear in the 4 x 100m Relay event.
Medley Match
Somewhat similar to the "Multi-Round Match" mode of the previous installment, 4 players play a predetermined number of events to try to get the highest score they can.
Upon creating a new file, the player does the Warm-Up Medley consisting of 3 events (100m > 100m Freestyle > Judo). Records set during this medley do not count, and the player cannot see the results of the events.
There are 2 ways to play Medley Match:
*Standard allows players to specify their preferred characters in each of the 5 groups before the events and offers instructions and results for the events.
*In the Quick type, it skips the instructions, character selection and interim results screen. The player can view only their current position and point total during an event.
Selection
Within a Medley Match, the player can choose medleys from London Games, preset selections of events based on event type; Variety, preset selections of events based on theme; Party Mix, a mode with a set of possibly random events hosted by Omochao, with other random modifier events; and Custom, the player's own selection of events. A Recommended Medley is also offered.
Custom Medleys
The player can create up to 20 custom medleys of 3 events (5 in case of Free-for-All) each in the Make an Event Medley option. Custom medleys have a Rarity Rating which is rated from 1 to 10 stars - this is determined by the average of each event's Best Event Ranking from 1 to 57. An event's Best Event Ranking is usually determined by three attributes:
*Frequency: Determined by how many times the player has played the event. In the Play Data section of the Record Log, the player can check which 5 events the player has played the most.
*Difficulty: The average level of COM opponents of all the player's plays in the event. This attribute will change even if the player cannot compete against a COM player or team because of the number of players and/or the selected event.
*Performance: The average finishing position of all the player's plays in an event.
The three attributes determines the "hidden score" for the event. This is compared to the other 56 events and determines the rank for that event. By picking events where the player is very good at or has been practicing a lot (whose Best Event Ranking is close to or at 1), the rating increases. On the flip side, selecting events where the player is not very good at or has very little practice at (whose Best Event Ranking is close to or at 57) will lower this rating. When each event in the medley are all in the top 3 or top 5 of the player's best events, the rating given will be 10 stars.
When playing multiplayer, the medleys available in the Custom list are based off medleys in the host's list, and only the host can win a badge for winning a custom medley with a certain rarity rating - a win by P2, P3 or P4 does not yield a badge for that player. The Rarity Rating does not change once a medley is created - the player must delete the medley, create another one and select the same 3 or 5 events on that medley to determine if the Rarity Rating has changed. Do note that the COM Level setting does not affect whether a badge will be won for winning a custom medley with a specific rarity rating.
Gameplay
Medley Mania uses a points system to determine the champion. The point structure is usually 10 points for 1st, 6 points for 2nd, 4 points for 3rd and 2 points for 4th, but certain conditions can change the amount of points a player/team can earn. In addition, some events play differently than in Highlight Match mode (e.g. in Keirin, players lower in rank during the medley start further ahead of the pack and the point distribution is 15-10-5-0 from 1st to 4th). After all the events, the player/team with the highest point total is the winner.
A check is given in the Select Medley for the appropriate difficulty level (and easier ones) for each medley that the player finishes in 1st place.
Multiplayer
Local Play and Download Play are both offered for 2 to 4 players. In Local Play, the player can play a single "Highlight Match" with other players or a "Medley Match". Records set during local play (including events that are co-op events) are saved.
Unlike previous Mario & Sonic games on DS, there are some limitations to Download Play. In Download Play, the player can play any event in a Highlight Match with character selection, or a limited version of Medley Match called "Party Mix Demo DL Medley" where everyone plays as colored Yoshis, regardless of the events chosen. In addition, the announcer and the characters don't talk on systems that are playing via Download Play. Some features are also disabled and also, the Top Screen is fully white when selecting an event or a character. Furthermore, players using Download Play cannot save their data, and when playing Download Play, there is different music for certain areas of the game.
Other Differences in Multiplayer Matches
Different things can happen depending on the selected event and the amount of players that are participating.
*When playing in multiplayer, each player may team up for an event depending on which event is selected.
**The controls in an event may be different in co-op than in single player.
*When only 2 players are connected, the human players automatically go to the Finals in case of tournament-based events.
*When selecting an event or medley with 2 members per team, the following will happen depending on the number of players connected:
**2 Player - The players will always pair up against the COM.
**3 Player / 4 Player - Each player selects a character. After that, the host selects the team that each player will be on. If there are 3 players, the character that is not selected by either of the players will join the team of the single player.
*When selecting an event or medley with 4 members per team, the following will happen depending on the number of players connected and if the the COM can control some characters of the user-controlled team:
**If there are 4 players, each player selects a character. The order of the characters is P1 > P2 > P3 > P4.
**If there are less than 4 players and the COM can control some characters of the user-controlled team, each player selects one character. The COM will control the characters that were not selected by the other players in certain events. This also applies in Single Player mode.
**If there are less than 4 players and the COM cannot control some characters of the user-controlled team:
***1 Player - The player will not select a character. Instead, the order of the characters in the Select Character screen will be the order of characters in the event.
***2 Player - Both players each select 2 characters. P1 will control the first and third characters while P2 controls the the second and fourth characters.
***3 Player - P2 and P3 both select a character, with P1 selecting 2 characters. P1 will control the first and fourth characters, P2 controls the second and P3 controls the third.
Events
Events
There are 57 events in the game, split into 11 sports. The selected event determines which character group will be used:
The Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games features a total of 57 events, the most of any installment in the series. The events are split across 11 different classes, and make use of most of the features of the Nintendo 3DS as inputs for them. Each event has a specific character group that is used for it, and the player can only choose from characters in that group to play the event- for example, 100m is a Heroes event, and hence the player can only use Mario, Luigi, Sonic or Tails to play it. Each event has three difficulty settings which alter the performance of the COM characters in the events, as well as being given a game level rating which estimates the complexity of the event, going from one to three stars. Different events also require different numbers of characters, and as such may require the player to select multiple characters to compete in the event, or to pick one out to specifically control in the team. Some of the events also record records, which will have a starting record when the game is first played, but if the player manages to beat the record, their record will be stored as the top one for the event instead.

However, while Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games is technically no worse than its forebears, its events are too much of a mixture when it comes to quality and after four years the blemishes and inconsistencies are beginning to wear thin. It's by no means a train wreck and a valiant first effort for the series in its jump to 3DS, but with the next inevitable release due in two years it's imperative that Nintendo and SEGA use that time to iron out the wrinkles and make this the all-star collaboration it truly deserves to be."

All the playable characters were originally going to have swimwear for the aquatic events rather than just the female characters. However, the idea was rejected by Sega because Sonic cannot have his shoes removed.

The game could be played over Nintendo Network; however, the service was terminated on April 8, 2024, making the game no longer playable online.[1][2]

Gameplay[edit]

Olympic Mode[edit]

Olympic Mode is the main mode within the game, and is based around playing the game's various events. Much like the other games in the series, each event is structured like a short minigame based on an Olympic event, where a winner is determined from the four entrants. Each event has a unique objective and control scheme, menaing that different events have varying lengths and difficulties. The mode can be played in both single player and multiplayer.

Highlight Match[edit]

Medley Match[edit]

In Medley Match mode, the player can compete in medleys made up of several different Olympic events to earn points, aiming to score more points than their opponents. For each event, the player will receive a number of points based on their placement in it, winning 10 points for first place, 6 points for second place, 4 points for third place and 2 points for fourth place.

In this mode, certain events are always treated as bonus events, giving them slightly different rules and awarding different point scores at the end of the event, mainly based on the score that the player achieved. The following events are treated as bonus events:

 • Marathon- Only a single round of the event is played, with the score being determined by the water bottle that the player grabs.
 • Basketball- The player will have a short practice session with a cursor before being able to make a single shot without the cursor to determine their point score for the event. The color of ball that the player receives depends on their placement in the medley, with higher ranked players receiving worse balls than the higher ranked ones. White and orange balls are worth 5 points, blue balls are worth 10 points, and rainbow colored balls are worth 15 points.
 • Handball- The event is played as normal with ten shots thrown by the Egg Pawns, and the type of balls thrown depending on the player's placement, with lower-ranked players receiving more multiple point scoring balls than those in higher positions.
 • Football- The event is played mostly as normal with only five shots thrown by the Shy Guys, and different types of balls thrown depending on the players' placement, with players in low positions receiving more multiple point scoring balls than those in high positions.
 • Keirin- The characters start the event with advantages based on their placement, with the fourth placed character starting further ahead than the third place character and so on.

Party Mix[edit]

It has been requested that more images be uploaded for this section. Remove this notice only after the additional image(s) have been added. Reason: A screenshot of a Party News event

 • Event Selection: A randomly selected human player chooses between four event types, including Timing games, Microphone games, Judgment games, Finesse games, Rhythm games, Flexibility games, Do-or-Die games, Wrist workout games, Repetition games, Balance games, and Intelligence games. An event is selected from the player's chosen category and played as the next event. During this Party News event, a picture is taken of the player choosing the event and is used to announce the chosen Olympic event.
 • Captain Drake's lost treasure: The lost treasure of Captain Drake is found, and players take it in turn to select a random chest that includes a number of bonus points. The number of points varies between players to even the scores such that players in lower positions will receive more points than those in higher positions, and the other players will be able to see how many points are in the choosing player's chests.
 • Bonus Update!: Announces all of the player's current ranks and the upcoming bonus events before they are played.
 • Party Mix Awards!: Handed out at the end of each medley, awarding players points for the most and least points earned in a certain event class, 10 and 15 points respectively for Party Mix 10 Medley in one class, 15 and 20 for Party Mix 15 Medley in two classes and 20 and 25 for Party Mix 20 Medley in two classes. This Party News event also makes use of the camera when revealing players that won awards and before announcing the final results, with computers receiving one of a number of images to represent them.
Custom[edit]

 • Frequency: Determined by how many times the player has played the event. In the Play Data section of the Record Log, the player can check which 5 events the player has played the most.
 • Difficulty: The average level of COM opponents that the player competes against in the event. This attribute will change even if the player cannot compete against a COM player or team because of the number of players or the selected event.
 • Performance: The average finishing position of the player in the event.

Multiplayer[edit]

The Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games offers both local and download play multiplayer for up to four players. Download play gives the players the option to compete in both highlight match and event medleys, controlled by the host. During this mode, after completing an event, the usual option to quit is replaced with the option to disconnect the other players.

In Local Play, both Highlight Match and Medley Match are played as normal, although with only the host being able to make selections. All records, including those set by a team, can be saved in Local Play.

Story Mode[edit]

Record Log[edit]

Play Data[edit]

In this mode, the player can view data based on their gameplay.

View Play Data[edit]

In the View Play Data option, the player can see their records for the forty events in the game that allow for records to be recorded, as well as the characters used to obtain the records. If both files have play data the, player is able to compare the records of the first and second file in this mode.

Play Data Top 5's[edit]

In the Play Data Top 5's[sic], the player can view the top 5 for Best Event, Best Controls, Most Played and Best Genre for the file.

Collection[edit]

In the Collection, the player can earn and view several types of the game's collectibles.

Medal Collection[edit]

Badge Machine[edit]

View Badges[edit]
Main article: List of badges in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)

Online Rankings[edit]

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games features a ranking system for each of the profiles in the game, based on the completion of the save file. Progress for various modes in the game, including medals earned, badges collected, and Story Mode episodes completed, which give the player a star ranking from 0 to 5. Characters[edit]

Playable characters[edit]

A total of 20 different characters are playable in the various events of the game, using the same roster as the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. However, unlike prior entries in the series, not every character can be played as in every event; the characters are split into five groups of four members each, and each event can only be competed in by members of a specific group.

Miles "Tails" Prower
After Mario's many adventures, he is now taking his all-round skills to the London Olympic Games, where his running and jumping experience should come in handy in events like the 100m Sprint and Pole Vault. The fastest hedgehog in the world, this little blue speed demon often gets going so fast, he appears to be just a whirling blur. He'll usually be found out front of any of the Speed-based events in these Olympic Games, and will be very difficult to catch in any of the short-distance sprints. Luigi is Mario's twin brother and the family resemblance is obvious. Like Mario, Luigi is an all-round type of guy, not excelling in any one area but showing solid ability in many events in the London Olympic Games. Sonic's buddy Miles Tails Prower is a fox that can fly, thanks to his bushy tails, he possesses a wide range of Skill-based abilities that will make him formidable in a wide range of events. He can jump and accelerate well, so he will be tough to beat in many races.

Like Sonic, Shadow is an extremely fast hedgehog that can give his more famous blue rival a run for his money in most Speed events. Additionally, his accuracy will help give him a leg up in events like Pistol Shooting and Fencing. Bowser Jr. is the son of Bowser, but don't let that fool you. with good balancing and the inherited hidden strength from his father, he's aiming for first place in these Olympic Games. Coming from the distant future with telekinetic abilities, expect the unexpected from Silver when this time-travelling hedgehog takes on the London Olympic Games!

The Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach has been kidnapped several times over by the wicked Bowser, but has always recovered with the help of Mario and Luigi. Her excellence in the Skill-based competitions means that she'll perform well in events like Ribbon and Showjumping. Sonic's wanna-be girlfriend presents an all-round set of skills that allow her to achieve success in many different events. She's not the most powerful athlete out there, but she can still surprise most of the competition in a variety of ways. Like Peach, Daisy is a princess and she comes from Sarasaland. Daisy is exceptionally fast and will perform well in all the Speed-based events, but her solid technique also will help her excel in some aquatics and gymnastics competitions. Blaze the Cat, another of Sonic's friends, is an all-round competitor. As her name indicates, she also possesses no small amount of speed and will be a formidable contender in events like the 4x100m Relay.

One of Mario's biggest rivals, Bowser is an extremely strong competitor and will dominate the Power events with his big muscles. His size makes him a formidable opponent in any event that he enters, especially the Hammer Throw and Javelin Throw. Knuckles is an echidna that shows exceptional versatility despite his overall strength in Power events. He'll perform best at events like throwing and rowing, but can also provide solid competition in many other competitions that aren't as power-based. With both strength and agility, Donkey Kong, a truly powerful competitor, cannot wait to try his unique skills in the London Olympic Games. Rough-and-tumble Vector is a crocodile that loves money, which means he wants that Gold Medal more than anything. With incredible Power skills, he'll perform well in the throwing events, and given his unique swimming stroke, can excel in the pool as well.

The burly opposite of Mario, Wario is a Power-based athlete, able to hurl objects incredible distances, and his awesome stamina gives him a boost in any long-distance events. He is driven by greed and will undoubtedly love to get his hands on a Gold Medal! Although Dr. Eggman has great Skill-based abilities, he also is quite powerful. His huge, lumbering frame doesn't give the impression that he would be good at Gymnastics, but believe it or not, he can handle the Trampoline and Rings quite well. Waluigi,[sic] loves to compete against Luigi and is known to be a bit of a cheat and leads the rivals around the nose. His Skill-based abilities will translate well to events like Shooting. Modelled with extreme accuracy to Sonic by Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic is one of our blue hero's earliest foes. He's out to get the better of Sonic and makes sure all of the Gold Medals are his.

Supporting characters[edit]

It has been requested that more images be uploaded for this section. Remove this notice only after the additional image(s) have been added. Reason: Screenshots of all of the characters missing one, and perhaps some better ones of some of the existing ones too

Events[edit]

Reception[edit]

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games received mainly mixed reviews from critics with some positive ones, scoring an average of 66 on Metacritic based on 28 reviews and 67.30% on GameRankings. Critics praised the gameplay of many of the game's events and the large amount of content, though criticized the limited multiplayer modes, control schemes for certain events and the similarity to previous installments in the series.

Richard George of IGN gave the game a 6.5 out of 10, praising the majority of the events, as well as the collectibles and use of medals and records, but criticized some of the simpler events and the restriction of certain characters to specific events. George also criticized the game's Story Mode and lack of Dream Events, frequently comparing the title to earlier ones in the series. Mark Reece of Nintendo Life gave the game a 6/10, similarly criticizing some of the control schemes, the Story Mode and overall weaker quality in comparison to earlier instalments, but praised the game's graphics and variety of collectibles and events. Shane Jury of Cubed3 gave the game an overall more positive review with a score of 8 out of 10, also praising on the game's graphics and event gameplay, as well as the advantages of simplified nature of the game, use of all of the input types of the Nintendo 3DS and the Story Mode, unlike the other reviewers. Jury also praised the game's soundtrack, but also criticized the game's poorly implemented multiplayer modes and unrealised potential.

Reviews
Release Reviewer, Publication Score Comment
Nintendo 3DS Richard George, IGN 6.5/10 "Perhaps that's what makes Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games on the 3DS so frustrating. While it has some great mini-games, it forcefully limits itself and discards many of the ideas that made its predecessors so good. There are some good elements here though. Acquiring medals, ranking your best scores globally and earning medals can be very addicting. But only half of these games are worth playing. Most are simply shallow attempts at their counterparts, which is more or less what this version of the London Olympic Games ends up being."
Nintendo 3DS Shane Jury, Cubed3 8/10 "Mario and Sonic's sporting antics make for an enjoyable 3DS debut that radiates character and graphical prowess, together with a wide array of varying competitive events and versatile methods of play, though a weaker multiplayer offering ensures a Silver Medal for Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games' long-range appeal."
Nintendo 3DS Mark Reece, Nintendo Life 6/10 "The Mario & Sonic games were once a shining example of how minigame collections should be developed.

Similarly to many of the other games in the series, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games was developed by Sega and Group 4 of Nintendo Software Planning & Development, with Sega also handling the publishing in most regions, and Nintendo publishing the game in Japan and South Korea. The game shares many of the key staff with the Wii version of the game, with both featuring Nobuya Ohasis as producer and Okitane Usui as executive producer. Osamu Ohashi as chief producer from Sega, and Tomoyoshi Hamane, Emi Watanabe, Toyokazu Nonaka, Hiroshi Sato, Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata in various production roles for Nintendo. The Nintendo 3DS version does have some specific staff, with Koji Shindo as director and Shinya Takahashi as a general producer for Nintendo. Many of the staff for this game have returned from working on earlier instalments in the series.

Pre-release and unused content[edit]

All the playable characters were originally going to have swimwear for the aquatic events rather than just the female characters. However, the idea was rejected by Sega because Sonic cannot have his shoes removed. Eventually, some of the male characters were given swimwear in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.[3]
