Black King Kaliente[1], King Kaliente (Black)[2] or just King Kaliente is a boss in Super Mario Galaxy. It is a more powerful form of King Kaliente that is called upon by Bowser Jr. to fight Mario in Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor. In this form King Kaliente's whole body has a much darker, blacker hue and red eyes.
Battle
In Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor, before fighting Black King Kaliente on the Lava Reactor planet, Mario needs to proceed along some steel platforms while avoiding Blue Lava Bubbles and defeating two Roctos. This prepares the player for the fight, similar to the first fight against King Kaliente. In the same area, Mario can find a Life Mushroom.
Upon reaching the battle area, Bowser Jr. arrives and calls upon his ultimate weapon, Black King Kaliente. Then, Black King Kaliente emerges from the center of the lava to start the fight. Black King Kaliente acts pretty much like in his previous battle, with a few key differences. The arena is much bigger than before, but it consists of a lava area surrounded by sinking metal platforms where the player can stand, which makes moving around harder. There are three coins in the arena that the player can use to recover energy. Additionally, Blue Lava Bubbles will constantly appear from the lava and pursue the player.
Black King Kaliente will start by spitting out three fireballs, followed by a coconut. Mario must use a Spin or a Spin Jump to whack the coconut back at the right time. The king will deflect it back, and Mario must spin in time once more to hit him. After taking damage, Black King Kaliente drops some Star Bits, gets angry, and submerges into the lava, causing a ring of several Blue Lava Bubbles to appear. He then starts shooting fireballs while generating more rings of Blue Lava Bubbles. Mario must once again reflect the coconut twice to hit him.
After being hit a second time, he drops more Star Bits, and his crown falls off, making him furious. He then causes several Meteors to fall periodically into the arena while shooting fireballs and spawning Blue Lava Bubbles much faster. This time, instead of spinning the coconut twice, Mario must do it three times, as Black King Kaliente now deflects the coconut a second time. Upon hitting Black King Kaliente for the third time, he is defeated and sinks into the lava, making the Grand Star appear and causing all enemies and obstacles in the arena to disappear.
