The "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme,"[1] also known as "Theme of SMG2,"[2] is a musical theme composed by Mahito Yokota as Super Mario Galaxy 2's main theme, with several arrangements of it being heard throughout the game. The original theme itself is not heard in-game, but was rather used in the game's trailer at the Nintendo Media Summit in 2010.[3] Prior to that, a version with synthesized instruments was used in the game's reveal trailer at E3 2009.[4] The theme incorporates an arrangement of "Gusty Garden Galaxy" from Super Mario Galaxy.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

While the "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme" is not heard in Super Mario Galaxy 2 itself, it is included in the official Super Mario Galaxy 2 Original Soundtrack album under the name "Theme of SMG2" and in the Super Mario History 1985-2010 soundtrack CD under the name "Main Theme (Trailer Arrangement)."

Super Mario Galaxy 2 features six additional arrangements of the "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme," all of which are also included in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 Original Soundtrack album.

An arrangement very close to the original theme titled "Sky Station Galaxy"[1] plays in the galaxy of the same name during its first mission. It is later heard during Grandmaster Galaxy's first mission when Mario/Luigi is at the third, fourth, and fifth sections. This arrangement features a different opening and omits the "Gusty Garden Galaxy" portion.

An arrangement of "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme" is incorporated in the game's title theme, "Overture."[1]

Another arrangement, "Pipe Room,"[1] plays in bonus rooms accessed via Warp Pipes.

Another arrangement, "Wild Glide Galaxy,"[1] plays in the galaxy of the same name when Mario/Luigi glides with Fluzzard.

A winter/Christmas arrangement, "Freezy Flake Galaxy,"[1] plays in the Freezy Flake Galaxy.

The last arrangement plays in the game's credits theme, "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Credits,"[1] which also incorporates "The Starship's Journey."

Mario Kart 8[edit]

Main article: Cloudtop Cruise (theme)

In Mario Kart 8, brief arrangements of the "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme" and "Gusty Garden Galaxy" are incorporated into the theme "Cloudtop Cruise," which plays in the course of the same name. This arrangement was composed by Atsuko Asahi.

Mario Kart World[edit]

In Mario Kart World, an arrangement of "Sky Station Galaxy" can play during the route from Mario Bros. Circuit to Crown City in Grand Prix, in any VS Race route, and Free Roam during the day.

An arrangement of "Wild Glide Galaxy" based on its arrangement from the "Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary Live" concert series can play exclusively in Free Roam.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, both the original versions of the "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme" and "Sky Station Galaxy" can play in the Mario Galaxy stage. They are titled "Theme of SMG2" and "Sky Station" respectively in the game's Sound Test.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, both the original versions of the "Super Mario Galaxy 2 Trailer Theme" and "Sky Station Galaxy" can play in any Super Smash Bros.-series and Super Mario-series stage, once again going by the names "Theme of SMG2" and "Sky Station" respectively in the game's Sound Test.
