"Power Up"

Composed by:
Koji Kondo
First appearance Super Mario Bros. (1985)
Latest appearance The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

"Power Up"[1] is a brief musical fanfare composed for Super Mario Bros. by Koji Kondo. It plays whenever the player collects a power-up.

Starting with Super Mario World, some power-ups are associated with distinct arrangements of the sound effect.

Composition[edit]

"Power Up" is an extremely sped up arrangement of "Course Clear," the theme that plays after the player completes a level. This sound effect uses a much faster harmonic rhythm and does not resolve to the tonic chord, making it sound energetic and open-ended.

Reuses[edit]

The following list does not include ports and remakes of Super Mario Bros.

In Super Mario World, an arrangement of "Power Up" plays when collecting a Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, or Super Star or when collecting a Cape Feather without transforming. This arrangement is titled 「大マリオ・ファイアマリオに変身」 (Dai Mario faiamario ni henshin) in the game's official soundtrack album.

When collecting a Cape Feather and turning into Caped Mario, an arrangement titled 「マントマリオに変身」 (Mantomario ni henshin) in the soundtrack album plays instead.

When an power-up is released from the Item Stock, a loose arrangement titled 「上の枠からアイテムがおちる時」 (-Jō no waku kara aitemu ga ochiru toki) in the soundtrack album plays.
