"Metal Mario",[1] also known as "Metallic Mario",[2][3] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for Super Mario 64, where it plays whenever the player obtains a Metal Cap and continues playing throughout the duration of the power-up's effect. It is an arrangement of "Invincibility BGM" from Super Mario Bros. with an added countermelody, much like "Powerful Mario" from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS[edit]

Super Mario 64 marks the first appearance of "Metal Mario", and it returns for the same purpose in the Nintendo DS remake, Super Mario 64 DS, and the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D All-Stars. It is also included in the official albums Super Mario 64 Original Soundtrack, Nintendo 64 Original Soundtrack Greatest Hits, and Happy! Mario 20th - Super Mario Sound Collection.

Exclusively in Super Mario 64 DS, two additional arrangements of "Metal Mario" play while the player character is in Mega form and while Yoshi has Fire Power respectively.

An arrangement of "Metal Mario" plays during the Wonder Effect in High-Voltage Gauntlet as the player takes on a metallic form. It is titled "Zappy-Zone Wonder" in the Nintendo Music app.

An arrangement of the countermelody to "Metal Mario" is incorporated in the theme that plays during the staff credits approximately 3 minutes and 52 seconds in, along with the "Castle Bowser Theme" and between "Flowy-Flight Wonder" and the "Grassland Theme". It is titled "Starry-Staff Wonder" in the Nintendo Music app.
