Latest appearance Wario Land: Shake It! (2008)

Reactions are unique, slapstick-esque status effects found in the Wario Land series. They are transformations that alter Wario's movement and abilities and are obtained due to being hit by certain special enemies or obstacles. Reactions first appeared in Wario Land II and have reappeared in every subsequent Wario Land game, though they are heavily downplayed in Wario Land: Shake It! with only a few appearing.

Reactions can generally be both helpful and harmful, each depending on the context. Most reactions have a timer before wearing off, these reactions are often used as a punishment for accidentally hitting an obstacle, though they can usually be cured earlier by touching water.

List of reactions[edit]

Reaction Game appearances Description Sources
Ball o' String Wario
Ball o' String Wario
Wario Land 3 Ball o' String Wario tumbles quickly and uncontrollably, only changing direction by bouncing off walls. This form is the only thing capable of breaking through certain blocks. After hitting walls enough times, the string falls off Wario and he stands dizzily for a few moments. Silky (WL3)
Anonster (WL3)
Bouncy Wario from Wario Land II

Wario Land 3
Wario Land 4
Bouncy Wario springs uncontrollably, which can be used to reach new areas, but also can be used to force Wario to backtrack in downward-oriented segments. Depending on the game, holding the jump button may make him jump higher or faster. He is returned to normal after enough bounces. Pogo Guy (WLII)
Hammer-Bot (WL3)
Doll Boy (WL3)
Menhanmā (WL4)
Golden Diva's hammer (WL4)

Wario Land 4
Bubble Wario is found only in underwater sections when touching large bubbles that come out of cracks in walls. He constantly moves slowly upward, with the player only being able to control his left and right movement, and is able to pass through currents unaffected. Like Bouncy Wario, it is helpful when traveling upward, but a hindrance when traveling downward. Touching any surface, including the surface of the water, pops the bubble and returns Wario to normal. Bubble (all games)
Awabō (WLII)
Crazy Wario from Wario Land II
Crazy Wario
Wario Land II
Wario Land 3
Crazy Wario stumbles about in an inebriated manner, occasionally stopping or changing direction. He can jump, but is still difficult to control. In the former game, he can also spew toxic gas that slowly moves across the screen to defeat enemies. In the former game, he stuns enemies on contact, while in the latter, touching enemies reverts him to normal. Falling in water returns him to normal in both games. Penguin (WLII)
Orange bird (WL3)
Electric Wario from Wario Land 3
Electric Wario
Wario Land 3 Electric Wario bounces backwards once while being zapped, then stands in place with a frazzled expression for a few moments before returning to normal. Its only positive is it defeats enemies on contact in its duration. Webber (WL3)
Denki (WL3)
Mr. Moon (WL3)
Fat Wario from Wario Land II
Fat Wario
Wario Land II
Wario Land 3
Wario Land 4
Fat Wario is much heavier, which means he moves slow, jumps low, and cannot perform other basic moves, but enemies are defeated by being flung off-screen if they touch him, landing causes shockwaves that stun all enemies on-screen, certain blocks can only be destroyed by jumping on them in this form, and some elevators can be forced downward. After walking or jumping enough times, he returns to normal. Cook (WLII)

Wario Land: Shake It!
Flaming Wario is a heavily recurring form that generally features two segments. The first involves Wario running around uncontrollably with his suspenders on fire, with the player only able to make him jump and Wario only turning when he touches a surface, with enemies being stunned if they hit him. After several moments, he becomes the second form where his entire body is on fire, where he moves much slower, can no longer jump but can now be steered, defeats enemies on contact, and can destroy certain blocks. After a few moments of this, Wario becomes covered in ash before shouting it off, returning to normal. In both states, falling in water instantly returns him to normal. Flame (WL2)

Wario Land 4
Flat Wario can drift through the air by jumping or falling off ledges, allowing him to cross wide gaps, collect many coins, and reach tight ledges. He can also make it through low areas with small pits that normal Wario would fall in if he attempted to crawl. However, this form moves very slowly on the ground while making a repetitive high-pitched noise. Falling in water, touching a falling drop, taking damage, being grabbed by a D-Bat or Omodonmeka in the first two games, or entering a decompressor in the final game returns him to normal. Wario Land: Shake It!
Frozen Wario quickly slides the opposite direction of whatever caused him to become that form, defeating enemies and even harmlessly crossing spikes, reverting when he hits a wall. The player cannot control him in any way. Yukimaru (WLII)
Brrr Bear (WL3)
Yeti (WL4)
Blue Flimflam (WL:SI!)
Invisible Wario in Wario Land 3
Invisible Wario
Wario Land 3 Invisible Wario can only be seen by the player through dust clouds and occasional flickers, making some platforming segments harder, and is able to pass through seeing-eye doors undetected. Being damaged or touching water reverts him. Mad Scienstein (WL3)

Puffy Wario
Wario Land II
Wario Land 3
Wario Land 4
Puffy Wario constantly moves upward and can be steered left and right, making the form similar to Bubble Wario, but on land. Much like it, it is useful for reaching higher areas, but is undesirable when trying to move downward. It is also a common manner of forcing Wario out of boss fights. When he hits a ceiling, he blows the air out and returns to normal. Bee (WLII)

Wario Land: Shake It!
Snowman Wario can turn into a large snowball whenever he rolls, allowing him to destroy certain blocks. Even while walking, he can defeat enemies by running into them, but cannot jump as high as normal. Hitting a wall while rolling returns him to normal. Snowdrift (all games)
Tiny Wario from Wario Land II
Tiny Wario
Wario Land II Tiny Wario (which in previous games was a Small Mario analogue) can jump higher and stun enemies by walking through them, but cannot perform other basic actions. Touching water reverts him to normal. Magician (WLII)
Vampire Wario (normal form)
Vampire Wario
Wario Land 3 Vampire Wario is able to defeat enemies on contact and has floatier movements, even being able to float across the top of water, as well as turn into Vampire Bat Wario. He is reverted by touching light or water drops. Kobatto (WL3)
Bat Wario
Vampire Bat Wario
Wario Land 3
Wario Land 4
Vampire Bat Wario can fly through the air and defeat enemies on contact, though on the ground he moves with an awkward flapping hop. In the former game, it is an alternate state to Vampire Wario and can be switched between them, but in the latter it is standalone. He is reverted by light, water, and hanging heads of garlic. Kobatto (WL3)
Minicula (WL4)
Zombie Wario from Wario Land II
Zombie Wario
Wario Land II
Wario Land 3
Wario Land 4
Zombie Wario defeats enemies on contact, but cannot jump, walks with a slow shamble, and falls through Semisolid Platforms, the last of which can be helpful or a hindrance. He is reverted by touching light, water, or garlic. Zombie (WLII/WL3)
Ghost (WLII)
Skeleton Bird (WL4)
Cractus (WL4)

In addition to these, there are a few boss-specific reactions that are not treated as equivalent to the above ones by materials such as guides and manuals:

Unnamed egg condition in Wario Land II (Game Boy Color).
Egg Wario
Wario Land II This is a useless reaction only seen if eaten by the giant snake, causing Wario to float upwards out of the battlefield uncontrollably, turning back to normal upon reaching the passage above. Giant snake (WLII)

Wario Land 3
When jumped on by sport-playing rabbit bosses in multiple games, Wario becomes a ball. If touched, he will be used to score a point, which will revert him to normal if he is still in the sport, though the boss getting three goals will evict him. The same effect can be performed on the boss. He can slowly move left or right while bouncing. He can also be reverted by touching a basketball in the former game and being grabbed and thrown by the tortoise goalkeeper in the latter game. Dunk (WLII)
Shoot (WL3)
Cursed Wario Wario Land 3 This form features similar visuals to Bubble Wario, though with whisps of mist replacing the bubble and no manner of controlling Wario's trajectory, thus being similar to the egg form. It occurs if Wario comes in contact with Wolfenboss's spells, wearing off once he reaches the area above. Wolfenboss (WL3)
