“Isn't this a cool old-fashioned train?! I could stare at it all day long... Us train fanatics are called "railfans." I'll wait for hours just catch a glimpse of a passing train!”
Railfan, Paper Mario: Color Splash

The railfan is a Toad that appears in Paper Mario: Color Splash. He is a train enthusiast who follows the Sunset Express throughout the game. The railfan first appears in Marmalade Valley, where he admires the Sunset Express, and says that he will wait for hours just to see a passing train. He tells Mario that the train is heading to Kiwano Temple, and that he will follow it, but wants to cry about his life first.

The railfan leaves Marmalade Valley and reappears outside Toad Trainworks, excited over seeing a train again. He says that even though it was in bad shape, it "still helped him forget how sad his life is for a split-second." He disappears after the level is finished, and cannot be seen for the rest of the game.

Every instance of the railfan's dialogue is internally referred to with FanKinopio, confirming he is the same character in both locations. In all translations, he has the same trait of obsessing over trains, but the overt cynicism in his dialogue is only consistent in English, with it briefly appearing in the European Spanish and Russian translations. In the Portuguese translation, he is specifically sad over the train leaving, instead of the state of his life.

A similar train enthusiast admires the Excess Express in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
