Pixel Toad is Toad in 8-bit form. He appears in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, when the player uses their Toad amiibo to play Hide and Seek. When activated, the player must locate Pixel Toad hidden somewhere in a stage. Once caught, a stamp of Pixel Toad is marked on the level that was played.

In the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game, the ability to play Hide and Seek with Pixel Toad is unlocked in a level after beating it once; the Toad amiibo instead grants an Invincibility Mushroom when scanned.

To commemorate Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker's release on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS, four Pixel Toads were hidden on the My Nintendo website, each of which would earn the user Platinum Points when tapped.[1]

Although Pixel Toad himself does not appear in Super Mario Maker, the Toad costume heavily resembles him.
