Flippers[1][2]:25[3]:80, 82, 127[4] (also known as one-way flippers,[2]:16, exit flippers,[3]:72 ground flippers,[4] or one-way gates[5]) are common objects in the Yoshi series. Always found in adjacent pairs, they are pinball flipper-like barriers that act as access points for the player character which, once passed through their slanted side, prevent access to the area before. Once activated, they remain open as long as the player character stays at their threshold. Flippers are encountered both horizontally and vertically.

HistoryEdit

Yoshi franchiseEdit

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its reissue, flippers take the appearance of peach-colored pinball flippers with blue stripes and tips. These open up to any moving entity, including a Yoshi, an enemy, or a thrown egg.

Flippers reappear in Yoshi's Island DS, Yoshi's New Island, Yoshi's Woolly World, and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, serving the same function as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its reissue. The flippers appear in more vibrant colors in Yoshi's New Island, while in Yoshi's Woolly World and its reissue, they are made of wood.

An elongated pair of flippers appear in the beginning of the Yoshi's Crafted World minigame level, Monty-Mole-B-Gone. Much like the rest of the game's aesthetics, these larger flippers are made of cardboard and are held together with extra pieces of cardboard and some rubber bands, but also feature blue stripes and tips, much like its previous incarnations. Once these flippers are passed through, the level's minigame begins as it starts autoscrolling to the right.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3Edit

Flippers appear in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 in the following World-e levels: Slidin' the Slopes, Doors o' Plenty, Swinging Bars of Doom, Sea to Sky, Puzzling Pipe Maze, and Treacherous Halls. In this game, the flippers are colored yellow.
