In battle, a Big Bully will ram into its enemy, attempting to shove him or her into the lava. These attacks do not actually damage the opponent; however, if pushed into the lava, the opponent will receive massive damage and will possibly die.

In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, there are two Big Bullies in Lethal Lava Land. They are fought in the first two missions, Boil the Big Bully and Bully the Bullies, respectively. When battling Mario, Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario, the Big Bully tries to shove him into the lava, but the Big Bully cannot injure him directly. The main difference with Big Bullies from their normal counterparts is that they are capable of knocking the player character back farther. Likewise, the player character cannot directly harm Big Bullies, so to defeat them, the player character has to knock them into the lava by either punching, kicking, or ground-pounding them.

During the events of Super Mario 64, Mario (or Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi, depending on the version) fight two Big Bullies in Lethal Lava Land. Both are keepers of a Power Star. The first one appears on a central platform in the lava level. In battle, the Big Bully's thick hide prevents Mario from damaging the enemy. As such, Mario must give the Bully a taste of his own medicine and push the large monster into the lava. To defeat a Big Bully, Mario should punch, kick, or stomp the Bully backwards, causing the monster to fall into the molten rock. The lava will then cause the Bully to melt, destroying the enemy and releasing a Power Star.
In Boil the Big Bully, the player character must go to a square-shaped platform near the north-center of the course, which is where he encounters a Big Bully. If the player character knocks the Big Bully onto the sinking platform next to its own, it tries to return to its normal place and stops fighting the player character. When the player character defeats the Big Bully, he earns a Power Star.

The second Big Bully is a little bit more difficult to discover. On a different platform, Mario must defeat three regular Bullies in combat. This is harder than it seems, as the three Bullies gang up on Mario, forcing the plumber closer to the lava. After defeating the three baddies, a Big Bully will fall from the sky and immediately attack the heroic plumber. Again, Mario must push the large Bully into the lava, causing the massive monster to melt (and release another Power Star).

Additionally, Big Bully makes an appearance in Mario Kart DS. In this game, Big Bully is the first boss of Mission Mode. Only Yoshi may face the Big Bully. This is interesting since Yoshi can only fight Big Bully in Super Mario 64 DS by wearing a special Mario, Luigi, or Wario cap.
In Bully the Bullies, the player character must go to a stone platform to the right of the platform with the first Big Bully. The player character must first defeat the three regular Bullies for the Big Bully to fall from the sky onto the platform. Like in the first battle, the player character must knock the Big Bully into the lava to get a Power Star.
