- “This circuit starts with an exhilarating jump, and continues with you sliding down the mountain, leaving a graceful trail in your wake. You'll pass through valleys, caves, and slalom through trees before hitting the final ski jump. The music accompanies you through all these different stages.”
- —Liner notes in the Mario Kart 8 Original Soundtrack
"Mount Wario"[1] is a musical theme composed by Ryo Nagamatsu for Mario Kart 8, where it plays in the race course of the same name. The theme is mainly lead by brass and string instruments. The theme also features a piano during the opening, as well as an electric guitar that comes in later in the song to back the leads. It has a point near the end of the final section of the theme where it for a short moment is the solo leading instrument, before the rest of the leads come back in right before the loop.
While most of the music in Mario Kart 8 is adaptive to some extent, "Mount Wario" is one of only 2 course themes in Mario Kart 8 to have separate music tracks for each section instead of playing a sped-up, higher-pitched version of the course's music for the final lap/section, the other being the musical theme for "Big Blue". Additionally, "Mount Wario" is the only theme in the entire Mario Kart series to have a single section feature two separate music tracks, that being the second section; with the first version playing in the cave and dam sections and the second version beginning when racers enter the forest. In all official releases of the theme, every variant is played in sequence on the same track.
History[edit]
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]
Mario Kart 8 marks the first appearance of "Mount Wario", as well as its 3 other variants. Like with the rest of the courses in Mario Kart 8, a looping drum set beat is added over the theme whenever the player is driving at top speed while in first place. This stipulation applies to all 4 versions of the theme.
All 8 variants of the track would go on to return in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the same purpose.
In the Mario Kart 8 Original Soundtrack version of the theme, all 4 versions of "Mount Wario" are played in sequence on the same track.
