Hammer Bros. (or Hammer Brothers) are a species of Koopa that stand upright and throw hammers at passers-by. They have been around since Super Mario Bros. They have bigger shells than normal Koopas and wear headgear. They can also use special hammers to shrink their enemies. Hammer Bros. have many times been described as the most elite fighters in Bowser's Koopa army.

Hammer Bros. first appeared in Super Mario Bros. as enemies who are encountered infrequently. Often, they appear in groups of two, and attack by jumping from rows of bricks to the ground. Rarely, a Hammer Brother will appear alone. They will occasionally jump; this when the Player can run below them. On a side note, while normally immobile, if the player waited long enough, the Hammer Bros. would charge towards the player.

In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, Hammer Bros. returned to help King Koopa as he kidnapped Princess Peach once again. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was much like Super Mario Bros. but still slightly different, so Hammer Bros. behaved a little different from Super Mario Bros. in the game. However, this game did introduce a new attack pattern for certain Hammer Bros.: some would gradually home in on Mario and Luigi.

Although absent from Super Mario Bros. 2, Hammer Bros. were given bigger roles in Super Mario Bros. 3. In this game, they essentially did what they did in Super Mario Bros., but were given three new variations: the rare Fire Bros., who spat fire in a manner immensely similar to that of Fire Mario, the Boomerang Bros., whose weapons would return to them, and the Sledge Bros., who were huge and could pound the ground (temporarily immobilizing Mario or Luigi). Also, Hammer Bros. patrolled the map screens, and touching one there would result in a battle with them.

Normal Hammer Bros. were absent from Super Mario World; instead, two variations of them appeared. One of these variations, the Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro., was a stout Hammer Bro. riding a winged platform. The other was the Sumo Bro., which could create thunderbolts that exploded upon impact with the ground.

In New Super Mario Bros., Hammer Brothers appeared once again as infrequent enemies, found only in 2-4 as regular enemies. Also the Sledge Bros., the Fire Bros., and the Boomerang Bros. appear. There, Sledge Bro only appear once in the game on World 8-7 as with the only appearance of the Fire bros in the game. Boomerang Bros appear as somewhat infrequent baddies in the game, found in 2-5, 7-3, and 8-7. Also similar to Super Mario Bros 3 is the Hammer Bro on the map, that when killed drops an item. They started appearing in World 5. Sledge Bros in the game was mistaken as Sumo Bros. which is a different type of Hammer Bro and has nothing to do with Sledge Bros, and are only in 8-7. Like in Super Mario Bros., the Hammer Brothers of New Super Mario Bros. would attack Mario or Luigi by hopping up and down in place and lobbing their hammers.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, There is a new sub-species of Hammer Bro. named Ice Bro. They would throw ice balls at the player.

Although no Hammer Bros. appeared amongst Bowser's invasion force at the beginning of the Mario anime film The Great Mission to Save Princess Peach, an individual one did appear later. This Hammer Bro. (which, depending on the selected scene, was depicted as both rather large and completely to-scale, likely due to mistakes) acted as the guardian of a small cave where a recurring pair of Goombas had trapped Mario, Luigi, and Kibidango. Luigi (who was actually searching for Coins at the time) eventually forged an escape hole out of the cave; with only minor interference from the Hammer Bro., Mario's crew managed to rush out of their horrible trap. However, in a last ditch attempt to retrieve his prisoners, the Hammer Bro. began his hammer-throwing attacks on a cliff that Mario, Luigi, and their canine friend were trekking; despite the enemy's efforts, Mario and his companions managed to get away from the Hammer Brother once and for all. Robed, book-carrying Hammer Bros. were later seen acting as singers during Bowser and Peach's wedding towards the end of the film and another Hammer Bro. applied makeup to Princess Peach for the said event, although Mario and Luigi never encountered these Hammer Bros. and they were therefore rather minor to the movie itself.

Hammer Bros. also appeared in the Super Mario anime series. In Super Mario Momotarō, two elderly Hammer Bros. named Ojiisan and Obaasan played the role as the grandparents of Princess Peach, and the adoptive parents of Mario.

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Hammer Bros. first appeared in the episode "Do You Princess Toadstool Take This Koopa...?" where two of them appear to attack Mario and Luigi when the two escape King Koopa's dungeon, only to accidentally hit each other on the head with their hammers instead. The second and last appearance of Hammer Bros. in the show was in the episode "The Trojan Koopa", where they appear as main antagonists and act as guards of King Koopa's latest fortress.

[edit] The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3

In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, Hammer Bros. made minor appearances in a few episodes and their appearance changed once more, this time to resemble better their in-game appearances. Although Hammer Bros. didn't make many appearances, their larger counterparts, the Sledge Bros., were quite prevalent.

In Nintendo Comics System, several Hammer Bros. appeared in the crowd of monsters chasing Mario in the story "The Fish That Should've Gotten Away". Several Hammer Bros., who didn't wield any hammers, also appeared to pester Toad, who had become a reporter, in the comic "The Kingdom Enquirer"; aside from these two appearances, Hammer Bros. also appeared in several of the false advertisements that were featured in the comics.

In the Super Mario Bros. movie a tattoo shop called "Hammer X Bros.", a reference to Hammer Bros., can be seen through a window of the Boom Boom Bar. Additionally, the uniforms of King Koopa's police force in the Super Mario Bros. movie have a slight resemblance to the armor traditionally worn by Hammer Bros., while the helmet worn by them is largely identical to a Hammer Bros'.

In Yoshi's Safari, Hammer Bros., as well as Boomerang Bros. and Sledge Bros., would occasionally appear as mini-bosses; in this game, Hammer Bros. would attack Mario and Yoshi by quickly throwing hammers at them, which would need to be dodged or knocked away by a blast of Mario's Super Scope. After being blasted repeatedly by Mario's Super Scope, a Hammer Bro. would be defeated.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Hammer Bros. were made completely different. Like their predecessors, these Hammer Bros. had yellow skin, however, instead of green shells with green armor, the Hammer Bros. of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars had black shells with black armor. Also, their hammers became wooden. They are also significantly larger than a normal Hammer Bro. (but presumably not larger than a Sledge Bro.). Additionally, these Hammer Bros. speak fondly of their hammers, as if their wooden weapons were sentient, living beings.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, the Hammer Bros. were the leaders of the Koopa Troop's forces in Mushroom Way. They were ordered to capture any intruders, which they did when the fungus Toad tried to pass through Mushroom Way to the Mushroom Kingdom. However, Mario showed up to rescue his friend. As a result, a battle erupted between the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom and the two Hammer Bros. During the battle, the Hammer Bros. pounded Mario with their hammers, and even used the special move Hammer Time, by throwing multiple hammers at the plumber. When Mario defeated one of the brothers, the remaining brother used the move Valor Up to increase his defense. However, even though his defense was boosted, the second Hammer Bro. was defeated by Mario. After the fight, Toad was freed, Mario earned a Flower Jar, and the hero even picked up his defeated enemies' Hammers to use in battle.

Later in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, a single, green colored Hammer Bro. named Dr. Topper appears in Bowser's Keep, which has been taken over by the Smithy Gang; Dr. Topper is not an enemy, per se, but he will block Mario's progress through Bowser's Keep, unless Mario solves his various puzzles and riddles.

In Super Smash Bros., Hammer Bros. will occasionally appear in the background of the Mushroom Kingdom stage.

In the Nintendo GameCube game Super Smash Bros. Melee, Hammer Bros. have the same role that they had on this game's predecessor, apperaing only in the Mushroom Kingdom stage background.

A Hammer Bro. appears as an Assist Trophy Character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Once it is released from the Assist Trophy, the Hammer Bro. will throw Hammers at the opponents, damaging them. The Hammer Bro. is invincible, like most other Assist Trophy Characters are.

Hammer Bros. also appear as enemies in The Subspace Emissary, Brawl's adventure mode. One appears to have helped steal Donkey Kong's vast horde of bananas and is targeted by DK and Diddy Kong. Hammer Bros. continue to work for Bowser, as stated on the website. Also, unlike the Assist Trophy Hammer Bros., these Hammer Bros. can be damaged and defeated.

In Paper Mario, Hammer Bros., along with Koopatrols and Magikoopas, were the elite of Bowser's forces. In this game, Hammer Bros. would attack Mario by either throwing one hammer at him or several, weak hammers at him. Additionally, Hammer Bros. will occasionally throw a hammer at Mario which can cause him to shrink in size and diminish his attack power.

A Hammer Bro. can be first encountered in Paper Mario in the Shy Guy's Toy Box, if Princess Peach tells Bowser and Kammy Koopa that one of the things that Mario fears most is a Hammer Bro., Kammy Koopa will later warp a Hammer Bro. into the Shy Guy's Toy Box to guard a treasure chest. Hammer Bros. are also encountered throughout Bowser's Castle, where they act as guards in it, attacking Mario if he approaches. Also, a Hammer Bro. by the name of Mr. Hammer ran a quiz called the 64th Trivia Quiz-off, in which Princess Peach participated in. Not only did Peach and Twink end up gaining new information about the whereabouts of the next Star Spirit, but ended up winning prizes, as well. A Jammin' Jelly for winning the competition, and a Sneaky Parasol just for participating.

Hammer Bros. also appear in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In this game they have the same attack pattern as in Paper Mario and are mainly found in Rogueport Sewers. A bunch of Hammer Bros. also appear when Bowser and Kammy summon their army to fight Lord Crump and the X-Nauts in Twilight Town.

There is also a Hammer Bro. named Hamma Jamma in the Glitz Pit. His team is with his two brothers, Bamma, a Boomerang Brother and Flare, a Fire Brother. Hamma Jamma will also also speak of his father and even his grandfather on occasion, the former of which he mentions is a Business Brother, apparently some sort of businessman version of a Hammer Brother.

Hammer Bros. regained their role as item-flinging Koopas in Super Paper Mario, where they appear as a main species. Here most Hammer Bros. are hypnotized by Nastasia into serving Count Bleck, though a few in The Bitlands still serve Bowser. They are found the Pit of 100 Trials as well. Like with many other enemy types in this game, there is also a shadowy version, the Dark Hammer Bro.

[edit] Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Hammer Bros. made minor appearances in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, which (for the most part) took place in the Beanbean Kingdom. On their way to the Beanbean Kingdom, Mario and Luigi encountered the Border Bros., who are beanish versions of Hammer Bros, as they wore armoring almost identical to a Hammer Brother's.

When Mario and Luigi reach Bowser's Castle they encounter traditional Hammer Bros. that (like the rest of the Koopa Troop) had been duped by Bowletta into defending the castle. They attack as usual, by throwing their hammers at Mario and Luigi. By watching the hammer's shadow, the player can tell if the hammer will hit Mario or Luigi, who can knock the hammer away with their own hammers. Also, if the Hammer Bro. waves his hammer before throwing it, he will throw it at Luigi, but if he throws it straight away, he will target Mario. Sometimes, a Hammer Bro. will throw multiple Hammers (up to three). They are healed by fire and have 100 hp.

Boomerang Bros., though drastically different than their Super Mario Bros. 3 versions, appear as enemies in Gwarhar Lagoon in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. This game also introduces Yo Brothers, Limbo Brothers, and Chomp Brothers.

[edit] Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Main article: L33t Hamm3r Broz.

Only one pair of Hammer Bros. appeared in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, and these individuals are known as the L33t Hamm3r Broz. In this game, they were reluctantly brainwashed by the Shroobs and forced to guard the Vim Factory from any intruders (or "pwn teh n00bs", as they put it). They were also notable for using leetspeak in their hypnotized forms, which caused a great phenomenon on the internet. Although the two L33t Hamm3r Broz. successfully "pwned" Mario and Luigi, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were left behind. The L33t Hamm3r Broz. were forced to "continue their pwnership", and went into battle with the babies. They were eventually defeated, though, and proved to be allies. As a reward for saving them from the Shroobs, they gave Baby Mario and Baby Luigi hammers and trained them in hammer use.

In the original Mario Party, Hammer Bro. appeared in Hammer Drop as an obstacle. Players had to avoid getting hit by his hammers while collecting coins.

Mario Party 2 featured Hammer Bro. as an obstacle in the mini-game Deep Sea Salvage, where players, once again, had to dodge the hammers and collect the coins.

In Mario Party 3, Hammer Bros. can found in certain mini-games throwing hammers at Mario and his friends.

Hammer Bros. made their first Gamecube appearance as an orb in Mario Party 5 & as a referee in the mini-game Fight Cards.

In Mario Party 7, the Hammer Bros. had the same role they had had in the fifth game of this series. They can also be found in the mini-game Hammer Spammer as the main obstacles.

Hammer Bro. makes a debut in Mario Party 8, as a playable character. He can be unlocked by beating the Star Battle Arena as Blooper. Like Yoshi, Hammer Bro. cannot speak English, instead, he speaks gibberish which could possibly be the Koopa language. It is unknown if the playable Hammer Bro. in Mario Party 8 is a specific character, or a different one each time, but it is probably the same one every time.

Hammer Bro. has also appeared as a boss in Mario Party DS, acting as the boss of Toadette's Music Room. The player with the most stars battled him in a minigame. In the minigame, the player had to touch the same drums as the Hammer Bro. in limited time. Hammer Bro. apparently speaks English in this Mario Party DS, saying things like, what seems to be, "Yo, yo!" when they landed on the drums before launching them to a random space, and laughing at the player when he's hit by his music notes. His voice is similar to his voice in Mario Strikers Charged Football.

[edit] Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix

During Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix two Hammer Brothers blocked the entrance of Mushroom Park to stop Mario (or Luigi) and Toad from getting the next Music Key from Wario. However, they would only let them pass if Mario danced against them and won. If the Hammer Brothers lost, Mario (or Luigi) was able to get into Mushroom Park.

A Hammer Bro., as well as a Boomerang Bro. and a Fire Bro., appear as teammates of Bowser in Mario Superstar Baseball. Hammer Bro. can be unlocked by beating Mario Superstar Baseball's Adventure Mode as Bowser. The other two types appear as alternate versions, with the Fire Bro being slower but more powerful, and the Boomerang Bro being less powerful but slightly faster and better at defense. Hammer Bro bats with a large hammer. Fire Bro. uses a normal red baseball bat and Boomerang Bro uses a boomerang. Boomerang Bro also puts a noticeable curve on all his hits much like Boo and King Boo.

In Mario Super Sluggers he is a playable character along with Boomerang Bro and Fire Bro. Unlike in Mario Superstar Baseball though, Hammer Bro. and his two variations are available from the get-go, and their fielding abilities are better than before. This is the second game where they can speak clearly.

Hammer Bros. had a large role in Super Princess Peach, where they seem to be Bowser's most trusted minions. In this game, it is they that storm Peach's Castle and kidnap Mario, Luigi, and the Toads. They are major characters, and they are led by the Army Hammer Bro. They also appear as generic enemies towards the middle of the game, and even Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bros., who were absent from games for some time, reappear. Their militant role was distracted, though, by the wild Vibe Scepter, resulting in sub-species such as the Calm Hammer Brother and Calm Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother.

In Mario Smash Football, Hammer Bros. appear as teamates and sidekicks to the game's captains. They are an offensive teammate.

Hammer Bros. also appear as offensive teammates in Mario Strikers Charged Football. Here, they were very good at shooting and passing the ball, but were unable to tackle very well. Hammer Bro. is also very slow in this game, possibly because he carries several hammers strapped to his back. Every time he takes a shot, he pulls one of these hammers out of the sling on his back. Hammer Bro. will also pull out these hammers when hitting, faking, and using his skillshot. His Fake allowed him to pull a giant hammer out of nowhere, and smash it on the ground to blast anyone he hit away. However, surprisingly, this move doesn't have a large range. This move is nonetheless a decent defense, as it will temporarily paralyze players that come in contact with it. His Skillshot is Hammer Throw which, once fully charged, will cause Hammer Bro. to leap into the air, toss hammers at the Kritter, the goalkeeper, nailing him to the ground and thus immobilizing him, which leaves the goal un-guarded for a few seconds. Once the Kritter is stuck to the ground the Hammer Bro. will smack the ball in for an easy shot. However the Hammer Throw has limited range meaning that it must be used very close to the goal to be effective. This shot will occasionally miss if done from the side, but if you're lucky there's a teammate nearby who can score before Kritter gets back up. Hammer Bro. was also given a standard voice in this game, in oppose to his computer voice. This is the first of two games where Hammer Bro. actually speaks. They typically exhibit a very cheery and positive attitude.

  • Chomp Bro. - Extremely muscular Hammer Bros. who utilize Chain Chomps as weapons.
  • Dark Hammer Bro. - Hammer Brothers who are completely black in color and featureless.
  • Fire Bro. - A red Hammer Bro who attacks by spitting out fire.
  • Limbo Bro. - An obese Hammer Brother who limbos and uses a flaming torch as a weapon.
  • Sledge Bro. - Large, green Hammer Brothers who can cause earthquakes and throw sledge hammers.
  • Sumo Bro. - Large, orange and yellow Hammer Brothers who can create waves of fire.
  • Yo Bro. - Hammer Brothers wearing jester outfits who utilize bladed yo-yos as weapons.
  • Ice Bro. - A Hammer Bro. that throws snowballs or ice balls to freeze the players and wears light blue armor.
