Trip is a status effect found in all of the Mario and Luigi series which some enemies can make Mario and Luigi trip. If a Mario Bro. trips, they will make a noise and they will shake until it is their turn or they get hit also whenever a Bro. is touched in the back outside battle, they will trip as soon as the battle starts. This status effect also prevents the player from fleeing and using Bro. attacks and the player will have to attack solo or use an item. This status effect cannot be cured with a Refreshing Herb in the first 3 Mario and Luigi games. ]] In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, some enemies such as Tanoombas and Chuck Guys can make Mario and Luigi trip and outside battle if a Mario Bro. touched a enemy even on the side on the back they will say "Oh no".

In Mario & Luigi Dream Team, the Gold Beanie will trip if the attacks are countered correcty.

In Paper Mario, the last Shy Guy from the Shy Squad trips and falls on his face.

In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, this status does not occur but if a Shy Guy or a Snifit assisted an enemy in battle, they may sometimes trip before reaching their position. Also when a Shy Guy attacks by flailing, it can trip on occasion before reaching Mario which causes the attack to be canceled.
