"Please Select Player"[1] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for the character selection screen in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic / Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic marks the first appearance of "Please Select Player." When that game was later redeveloped as Super Mario Bros. 2, the theme was given slightly more enhanced instrumentation and has been extended by several measures, which is the version subsequent appearances of the theme in the Super Mario franchise are based on. The Super Mario Bros. 2 version is also included in the official albums Game Sound Museum: Mario Bros. / Super Mario USA, Famicom Sound History Series: Mario the Music, and Nintendo Sound Selection Vol.3: B-Side Music.

The SNES remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 in Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World, and Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition, contains its own arrangement of "Please Select Player," which plays in the character select screen like in the original game.

The Game Boy Advance remake of Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Advance, contains its own arrangement of "Please Select Player," which plays in the character select screen like in the original game. This arrangement plays in a slightly higher pitch, aside from the drums and percussion.

Super Mario 3D World[edit]

In Super Mario 3D World and the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, an arrangement of "Please Select Player" plays in the Lucky House slot machine minigames. This arrangement is in the same key as the Super Mario Advance version. It is titled "Slot Machine" in the official Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

In Super Mario Maker 2, the Super Mario 3D World version of "Please Select Player" plays whenever the "Bonus Music" sound effect is triggered in a Super Mario 3D World-style level. The Super Mario Bros. 2 version will play whenever the same thing occurs while the player is in their SMB2 form.

Mario Kart World[edit]

In Mario Kart World, a Dixieland jazz arrangement of "Please Select Player" can play in Free Roam and during routes in Grand Prix or VS Race. In Grand Prix, it is one of three arrangements that can play on the route from Mario Circuit to Peach Stadium in the Special Cup. This arrangement is in the same key as the Super Mario Advance version.
