Donkey Kong Country is a board book published in 1997 by Sunflower Publishing, written by Joanne Barkan, and illustrated by Dave Philips.[1] It is one of two books in the My Very First Nintendo Game Boy series, the other being Super Mario's Adventures. The book contains simple puzzles that tie in with a short story. The cover features a "screen" hosting a moving-parts water game with artwork from Donkey Kong Country as the background.

Puzzles[edit]

  1. "I'm hungry!" Donkey Kong roars. "So am I!" Diddy shouts. Big trouble! The monkeys have left their stash of bananas on the other side of the island. The journey there will be long and dangerous. Can you help them arrive safely? As you solve the puzzles, look for ten hidden bananas. Before you start, find the five creatures lurking in the jungle on this page.
  2. Go, Donkey Kong! He's leading the way out of the jungle by swinging from one vine to another. Now he must grab the vine that has no enemy holding on to it. Help Donkey Kong choose the correct one: Follow each vine from the number at its top down to its tip. Then match each enemy with the number of its vine.
  3. Look at the pit Diddy is crossing! It's covered with slimy Slippas! You can help Diddy concentrate and keep his footing by figuring out how many Slippas are in the pit. Which Slippa is biting another Slippa's tail? Which one crosses over itself? Which one has no others on top of it? Which Slippa is touching the largest number of other Slippas?
  4. Uh-oh! Enguarde the swordfish promised to carry Donkey Kong across a deep cove. but they got lost in a watery maze! Help them escape by tracing a path through the blue water. Start at the letter K and end at G. What word did you spell along the way? Before leaving the maze, find five pairs of fish.
  5. Fierce enemies appear out of the blue and surround Donkey Kong and Diddy! Diddy is so frightened he sees double! Help him calm down by finding ten differences between the two pictures. (Look for bananas in just one picture.)
  6. A shortcut through the Lost Mines? What a terrible idea! Our friends really need your help! Find a path along the tracks to the exit. Remember—the monkeys' cart can follow all the curves on the tracks, but it cannot jump from one track to another. Can you spot ten bats in the mines?
  7. Bananas at last! Diddy and Donkey Kong will probably eat dozens while they think back on their adventures. Help them remember what happened by finding each of these pictures on a previous page.
P.S. Did you find ten hidden bananas?
