Super Mario Bros. Gameworld, known as Super Mario Gameworld on the gameboard and cutout sheet, is a board game published in 1992 by BYGGIS in Europe. It is part of BYGGIS' series of Super Mario–franchise sets. Two players can play the game by using Mario and Luigi cutout pieces.
GameplayEdit
The goal of the game is to be the first to rescue Princess Toadstool ("Princess Mushroom" in the rules) from Bowser ("King Koopa" in the rules), who took her to his castle while scattering traps and enemies across the path. Before starting the game, players have to build the gameboard with the included blocks, which is divided into six "worlds": The Red Staircase, Bashing Castle, Waterland, The Grey Mountain, King Koopa's Castle, and The Green Staircase. Each player has four character pieces (Mario/Luigi, Raccoon Mario/Luigi, Frog Mario/Luigi, and Mario/Luigi with the Princess) and moves on the gameboard by throwing the small dice. If a player lands on the same square as the other player, the other player moves back to the first empty square. On some squares, the player can use the Super-dice and try to get the Super face. If the Super face comes up, the player replaces their Mario/Luigi figure with the Raccoon Mario/Luigi figure (or the Frog Mario/Luigi figure in Waterland), which allows them to jump over squares. If the player lands on a trap or does not get the Super face on a Super-dice square, they revert their figure back to the normal form.
In The Red Staircase, players have to avoid two obstacles: the chasm and the ice-floc (the white square), which take them back to the start if landed on. If a player lands on the square at the top of the staircase just before the chasm, they have to throw the Super-dice once. If they get the Super face, they can use Raccoon Mario/Luigi to jump to the square after the ice-floc, at the beginning of Bashing Castle. Otherwise, they continue throwing the small dice. The player must land exactly on the first yellow square of Bashing Castle to proceed; if they get a number taking them over the first square, they must try again on the next turn.
In Bashing Castle, players have to avoid landing on the pale green squares. If they do, they will be hit by Boom Boom ("Basher" in the rules) and return to the nearest yellow tower square. On the yellow towers, the player has to use the Super-dice once. If they get a Super face and change into Raccoon Mario/Luigi, they can skip to the next yellow tower square. If the other player is already on the tower, that player has to return to the previous tower.
In Waterland, players are free to stand on any of the first three red squares. Here, they have to use the Super-dice; if they get the Super face, they can change into Frog Mario/Luigi, which allows them to take another path to the first gray square at the beginning of The Grey Mountain. While in this form, they have to still throw the small dice to move until they reach the gray square, where they then have to change their figure back to the normal form. If the player does not get the Super face, they have to proceed on the main path, where they must avoid landing in the sea; if they do, they are sent back to the nearest land square. The player also has to avoid the ice-floe (white square); if they land on it, they will be sent back to the beginning of Waterland.
In The Grey Mountain, the player has to avoid landing on a square next to Roy or Morton. If they do, they can try to throw the Super-dice; if they get the Super face, they can use Raccoon Mario/Luigi to ignore the Koopalings. Otherwise, the player will be sent back to the first gray square at the beginning of The Grey Mountain. If that square is occupied, they will be sent back even more to the red island square in Waterland. At the top of the mountain, both players are allowed to stand on the two squares.
Before proceeding to King Koopa's Castle, players have to throw the Super-dice first to try to get the Super face and become Raccoon Mario/Luigi. They have only one try per turn, and must wait on their square if they do not get the Super face. Once the player gets the Super face, they throw both the small dice and Super-dice. If they get a 1 or another Super face, they enter the castle and get an extra turn. To rescue Princess Mushroom, they must try to get another 1 or Super face again. If they do, they replace their figure with the Mario/Luigi with the Princess figure and move to another corner of the castle. They then must try to get a Super face to move to the first pale green square at beginning of The Green Staircase. If they do not get a Super face, they can try to use the small dice to throw a 1, 3, or 5 (as getting any other number will cause them to land on an obstacle).
In The Green Staircase, players have to avoid landing on the ice-floes. If they land on one of them, they will be sent back to the top of the staircase. If the player lands on a square occupied by the other player, that player has to move back to the top of the staircase. If that is the occupied square, they will have to move back to the corner of the castle. The player has to reach the gray square at the bottom of the staircase to win the game.
