Unlike prior Mario Kart games, Mario Kart Arcade GP VR is played through use of a virtual reality headset and in first person. Similar to the prior arcade Mario Kart games, the game is controlled via a steering wheel and acceleration and brake pedals. In addition, items are thrown by making hand movements, which the game registers by an attachment to the player's wrist. For example, to throw a Green Shell, one must make a throwing motion with their open palm. Also, instead of using Item Boxes, the game uses red, yellow, and green balloons to store items. Gliders are also present, and are used similarly to Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.

Mario Kart Arcade GP VR is a Mario Kart game released for virtual reality arcade machines, released in Japan on July 14, 2017. It was later released in the United Kingdom on August 3, 2018, and the United States on October 1, 2018. It is the fourth entry in the Mario Kart Arcade GP series.

Gameplay[edit]

Unlike the prior Mario Kart games, Mario Kart Arcade GP VR is played through use of a virtual reality headset and in first person. Gliders are also present, and are used similarly to Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.[7][8]

There is only one, single-lap course available, but it has different themes, which pulls elements from courses within Mario Kart Arcade GP DX. Its first and second section is a remake of Kingdom Way, only with Big Piranha Plants and Thwomps; the third section is set on a mashup of Aerial Road and Sky Arena, only with many more Bullet Bills and Bob-ombs; the fourth section is based on Bowser's Castle; and the fifth section is based on Peach Castle. Before the race, Bowser and Wario push ahead of the players.[9]

Characters[edit]

Four characters are playable in the game, while two other characters are CPU-only. Unlike previous Mario Kart Arcade GP games, this game does not feature characters from Bandai Namco Entertainment, making Mario Kart Arcade GP VR the only Mario Kart Arcade GP game with this distinction; this is also the first Mario Kart game since Super Mario Kart to not feature Wario and Donkey Kong as playable characters, and the first overall to not feature Bowser and Toad as playable characters (both Donkey Kong and Toad are completely absent).

Playable[edit]

Each arcade cabinet has a different single playable character.
