The "Desert Theme"[2] is a recurring musical theme that appears in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, playing in the desert courses. This theme replaces the desert theme appearing in New Super Mario Bros., with the first five seconds of the theme being an arrangement of the first five seconds of its predecessor. It would be rearranged throughout the New Super Mario Bros. series.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, cuíca and shaker percussion is added to the instrumentation of the "Desert Theme" whenever a player is riding a Yoshi. This remix is reused for the same purpose in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and Super Mario Maker 2.
New Super Mario Bros. 2Edit
In New Super Mario Bros. 2, a woodblock beat is added to the original "Desert Theme" whenever Mario or Luigi are in their Raccoon/Fox forms, and a bell synth arpeggiator is added while the Gold Ring is active.
New Super Mario Bros. UEdit
New Super Mario Bros. U features a new remix of the "Desert Theme" with minor changes to the oud, santoor, and sitar audio. Vocalizations are also added whenever a player holds onto a Baby Yoshi. Both are reused for the same purposes in New Super Luigi U, New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.
Super Mario RunEdit
In Super Mario Run, a remix of the "Desert Theme" that removes "Paah" vocals from the New Super Mario Bros. U remix plays in the desert levels. Moreover, wind chimes and synthesized scratches are added to the instrumental during a Coin Rush.

Super Mario Maker 2Edit
The New Super Mario Bros. U remix of the "Desert Theme" plays in desert-themed levels in Super Mario Maker 2. An ambient arrangement of the "Desert Theme" using eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix plays while editing New Super Mario Bros. U-style desert-themed courses in the Course Maker. Additionally, a music box arrangement of the "Desert Theme" plays during the nighttime version of desert-themed levels in the New Super Mario Bros. U style.
