Baby Wario is the infant form of Wario who first appears in Yoshi's Island DS. Sometimes, such as in the Adventure mode for Mario Tennis Fever, he is simply referred to as Wario. Baby Wario's special move is "magnetism", in which he pulls out a magnet which attracts coins. His magnet is also capable of raising metallic platforms and moving large, metal boxes.
Wario also appears as a baby in a scene of the German Club Nintendo magazine comic Warios Weihnachtsmärchen and in the first chapter of the Super Mario Kodansha manga Super Mario: Wario no Mori, though not as the character Baby Wario.
General information[edit]
Physical description[edit]
- “That's not Baby Mario! He looks decidedly... stouter. And he... smells funny. He must be Baby Wario!”
- —In-game text, Yoshi's Island DS
Baby Wario shares many physical qualities with his adult counterpart, having cyan lines around his eyes, a large, pink nose, and a wide grimace. Similar to Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, his eyes are beady and lack a sclera.
In his first appearance in Yoshi's Island DS, Baby Wario wears nothing but his cap and a diaper. As he reappears in Dr. Mario World, he wears a white shirt, purple pants and green shoes similar to those of his adult counterpart, giving him a closer appearance to the current designs of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi; he also wears a white lab coat and a yellow tie featuring his emblem on top.
In Mario Tennis Fever, he wears outfits that match Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and the newly introduced Baby Waluigi: overalls in Story Mode and a yellow short-sleeved shirt with purple shorts in the others.
Personality[edit]
Baby Wario is the noisiest out of the babies in Yoshi's Island DS, his cry being louder than the others'. Similarly to his adult counterpart, he has a tendency to be greedy. Unlike the other babies, Baby Wario can talk; when getting to World 5, he is seen arguing with Baby Bowser, showing himself as being quite argumentative. He is also shown to be more willing to work together with others than his adult self is.
History[edit]
Yoshi's Island DS[edit]
When Baby Wario was originally kidnapped in Yoshi's Island DS, the Toadies found his crying to be annoying, so they left him alone in World 3-5. Some time after that, Yoshi finds Baby Wario after being washed away by a large wave and separated from the Stork and the other babies. Baby Wario assisted Yoshi throughout the rest of World 3, but leaves him after World 3-8, joining up with a group of Bandits in hope of even more riches. Yoshi and the rest of the babies meet up with Baby Wario one last time in Bowser's Castle. He helps the Yoshis by defeating Bowser on the back of Purple Yoshi. After the castle is destroyed and the team finds the babies, Baby Wario lands on a very large Treasure Chest filled with treasure. However, Baby Bowser also lands in the treasure, initiating an argument over it.
At the end of the game, it is revealed that Baby Wario, like Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Bowser, Baby DK, Baby Peach, and Baby Yoshi, is one of the seven star children.
Dr. Mario World[edit]
Baby Wario returns in the June 26, 2020 update for Dr. Mario World as Dr. Baby Wario, making his first 3D appearance.
Dr. Baby Wario's skill in stage mode is to collect all the coins within a 3x3 targeted area, which include the virus coins in the background, every coin in the Coin Blocks and Muddy Coins no matter how much mud are covered on them. The only coins that cannot be collected this way are barriers that are activated, caged coins with its cages intact or coins within colored cages. The way this skill works is that after it is activated, Dr. Baby Wario will prepare his magnet, and then a target will move around the stage. By tapping the screen, coins within the range will be collected with the magnet. Prior to version 2.3.0, the target moves in a predetermined direction in a cycle, but since that version, the target moves slower and in random directions orthogonally. Since version 2.3.0, using this skill when there are no coins in the stage will instead eliminate one random virus or object, whereas previously this skill will proceed as normal even though there are no coins to be collected. In versus Mode, Dr. Baby Wario's skill sends three, six, nine or twelve purple coins to the opponent's play area at level 1 to 4 respectively. At level 5 this skill also sends 12 coins, but the skill meter is filled a faster rate compared to level 4. Coins sent by Dr. Baby Wario can be eliminated through making a capsule match next to it or eliminating it directly such as using a skill on it.
Mario Tennis Fever[edit]
Baby Wario makes his home console debut and first appearance in the Mario Tennis series in Mario Tennis Fever. He appears as an unlockable playable character alongside the newly introduced Baby Waluigi. Baby Wario can be unlocked by winning the singles Star Cup tournament. Like his adult counterpart, he is a Powerful character; as such, his power is his strongest statistic, though it is the lowest among characters of that play style. His weakest statistic is his spin, rated at 1 out of 5. Also like Wario, his topspin charged shot charges faster than others.
In Adventure mode, Baby Wario is the form of Wario after he is transformed by monsters while attempting to find the golden fruit. He is transformed alongside Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, and Baby Waluigi, and are sent to the Mushroom Tennis Academy. There, Baby Wario and Baby Waluigi refuse to participate in tennis lessons, believing they are already skilled enough, even as babies. Baby Mario and Baby Luigi repeatedly play against the duo throughout their own training at the academy. Baby Wario and Baby Waluigi follow Baby Mario, Baby Luigi and the Toads back to the island in order to return to normal. On board Princess Peach's airship, the duo plays a match against Baby Mario and Baby Luigi using the Flame Rackets, which lights fires around the ship. They then escape via parachute, leaving Baby Mario to stop the flames.
Baby Wario and Baby Waluigi are then revealed to have allied themselves with Bowser, and help with an attack by Bowser's battleship against Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. With help from Bowser's forces, the two arrive at the island before the others. Baby Wario and Baby Waluigi face off against Baby Mario one last time after the defeat of Petey Piranha, this time with Daisy playing as Baby Mario's partner. After their final defeat, they are not seen again until the credits sequence, which shows Wario and Waluigi returning to their adult forms after King Scuttlebug's defeat.
Baby Wario appears as the player's character in the trial "Best of Both Worlds" of the Tower of Trickery, wielding the Swerve Racket.

Notes[edit]
- Despite his artwork from Yoshi's Island DS having him on Light Blue Yoshi, this is impossible in actual gameplay, since he only appears from levels 3-5 to 3-8 (Light Blue Yoshi is the third level of every world) and in 5-8, where he rides Green Yoshi and Purple Yoshi.
- In Mario Super Sluggers, although Baby Wario does not make an appearance, his adult counterpart uses a magnet as his captain ability in Challenge Mode.
- Instead of his actual emblem, Baby Wario's tie in his artwork for Dr. Mario World is shown featuring an emblem that looks like Mario's, but flipped vertically and recolored blue.
