Bars are obstacles in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They completely block hallways, and are only penetrable if the player character is in their Boo form. Equivalent walls called crystal[1] appear in the first Super Mario Galaxy as well. They function the same way.

History

Super Mario Galaxy

Squared screenshot of crystal from Super Mario Galaxy.

Bars appear in the Ghostly Galaxy of Super Mario Galaxy, where Luigi is being imprisoned during "Luigi and the Haunted Mansion". They are introduced alongside Boo Mushrooms, which transform Mario into Boo Mario. Shaking Wii Remote makes Boo Mario turn intangible for five seconds, enabling him to phase through the bars and ultimately reach Luigi. Bars are otherwise impenetrable to Mario.

During "Racing the Spooky Speedster", Boo Mario races the Spooky Speedster in the cavernous Boo's Boneyard Galaxy. The entire raceway is on a 2D plane. The caverns are blocked by translucent, ghostly walls called crystal that function identically to bars.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Bars only appear in the Howling Tower of Boo Moon Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy 2, the only part of the game to include Boo Mushrooms. It more closely resembles a chain-link cage, but behaves as it did in the prior game. This area is only accessible during "Haunting the Howling Tower". The layout of the Howling Tower is comparable to Boo's Boneyard Galaxy.
