(I appreciate moving away from the Zelda Wiki-infobox thing they do, but is it even necessary to include screenshots from both games in the infobox? The squared screenshot from SMG2 is holistically representative of how they appear throughout the game, because 1.) the SMG hole-designs do appear in SMG2 and 2.) almost every hole in SMG2 looks different from one another in-game, so it's not like the SMG2 screenshot shows a radically different design for them. It's just... one of the new designs.)
(Merged with Star Ball, per proposal.)

Divots,[1] originally known as holes or rings,[2] are indentations in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They appear only in levels that feature the Star Ball. In Super Mario Galaxy, yellow-ringed divots launch the Star Ball from one area to another. The blue-ringed ones are goals that will break the Star Ball, allowing Mario (or Luigi) to grab the Power Star it contains. Divots have inconsistent designs in Super Mario Galaxy 2, with the ones that launch the Star Ball simply being whatever indentation is at a planetoid's apex and the goals being whatever is the last hole of the level.
