Lubba, Super Mario Galaxy 2

Lubba is a large purple Luma who first appears in Super Mario Galaxy 2. She is the leader of the Lumas in the game, and similarly to them, Lubba can also be fed by shooting Star Bits at her. She often makes remarks about the guests on her ship; as an example, she claims to be allergic to honeybees, has an aversion to Gearmos, and considers Whittles to be good friends.

History[edit]

Background[edit]

This section is referring to a subject in an upcoming or recently released game. When the game is released, or more information about this subject is found, this section may need major rewriting.
This notice should be removed after a month has passed since the game was first released.

When she was younger, Lubba (previously going by the name of Lu) once lived on the Comet Observatory with Rosalina and several other Lumas, including her identical twin sister Mari. She and Mari were inseparable until Mari transformed into a star. Heartbroken, Lu went on a journey of her own before reuniting with Rosalina and becoming captain of her own ship of Lumas.

Lubba is first seen after Mario beats Sky Station Galaxy's first mission, "Peewee Piranha's Temper Tantrum." Prior to the events of the game, Bowser destroyed Lubba's first spaceship by firing several meteors at it. This caused most of the Lumas on the ship to fall down to the Mushroom Kingdom. After Mario brings back the "young master Luma," Lubba thanks him and then creates Starship Mario with her fellow Lumas and promptly appoints Mario the captain. Lubba aids and accompanies Mario in his quest to defeat Bowser, making a deal with him that, in return for Mario recovering the Power Stars, she helps Mario rescue Princess Peach. As the captain of the mobile hub of the game and the leader of the Lumas, Lubba more or less replaces Rosalina and Polari of the previous Super Mario Galaxy in this respect.

Throughout the game, Lubba informs Mario of several different things. Most of the time, she stands by Starship Mario's wheel and tells Mario different things to help him out. However, Lubba can also be found in some other places on the ship. Whenever a new item or passenger comes aboard the ship, Lubba appears somewhere else on the ship and tells Mario something about the new object or creature and/or cracks a joke about them. Whenever Mario enters a new world, Lubba flies off Starship Mario and says something about Mario's progress.

Lubba is sleepy.
Lubba's speech bubble when the game is played in the morning

Lubba has various lines in Super Mario Galaxy 2 that can be seen during specific scenarios:

  • When the game is played early in the morning, Lubba's field speech bubble says, "So...sleepy..." When spoken to, she says, "Geez. It's kinda early, isn't it? I feel so sleepy..."
  • When the Wii Remote's batteries are low, Lubba tells Mario to replace them and warns that it will be bad if the batteries die in a dangerous place.
  • When Mario has 77 Power Stars or 777 or 7,777 Star Bits, Lubba says, "Hey, you have (number and object)! How lucky! ♪" Similarly, if the player has exactly 1,000 Star Bits, she says, "You have 1,000 Star Bits! That must feel pretty good!" Additionally, when Mario has 9,999 Star Bits, Lubba says, "What happens when you get 9,999 Star Bits? Something nice, I bet!"

After the player collects the 242nd (and final) Power Star from Grandmaster Galaxy, Rosalina (whom Lubba calls "The Lady of the Shooting Stars") boards Starship Mario, and Lubba thanks Mario for his hard work.

Mario Golf: World Tour[edit]

In Mario Golf: World Tour, Lubba appears in Rosalina's Eagle, Albatross, and Hole-in-One animations.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Lubba makes a background appearance piloting Starship Mario above Mario Galaxy. There is also a trophy of Lubba, unlocked by completing the event match A Situation of some Gravity.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Lubba reappears on Mario Galaxy with the same role as in the previous game. There is also a support spirit of Lubba. The spirit grants the fighter immunity from reversed left-and-right controls when equipped. The Lubba spirit battle pits the player(s) against a giant Kirby who starts the battle holding a Super Launch Star. There is decreased gravity for the duration of the battle (unless a spirit that counters this is equipped), and the battle takes place on the Mario Galaxy stage with the music "The Starship Sails" from Super Mario Galaxy 2 playing.

Mario Sports Superstars[edit]

Due to Mario Sports Superstars reusing Rosalina's golf animations from Mario Golf: World Tour, Lubba reappears in this game in the same capacity.

General information[edit]

Physical appearance[edit]

Lubba is a plump purple Luma with checkered shorts. She has light-blue eyes and a bulb on the tip of her head. As a child, she looked much more like a standard Luma having black eyes and being much smaller with no bulb on her head, only she was blue and had a visible mouth unlike many other Lumas. She became larger and more purple as she aged.

Personality[edit]

Lubba is friendly and cheerful, offering Mario help whenever she can, such as when Bowser kidnapped Peach and offering Mario her starship to help rescue Peach, and even remodeling her ship to look like Mario as thanks for finding a Power Star. Lubba has a habit of cracking jokes, and she enjoys making bad puns. As a child, she was more shy and insecure. She was sad when her sister Mari turned into a star and when she herself was unable to turn into a star, but became more confident and easygoing with age.

Gender[edit]

The English game manual for the Wii version of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U trophy for Lubba refer to her as male, as do Super Mario Galaxy 2's French and Italian localizations. However, the German and Spanish localizations refer to her as female. In the Japanese text, Lubba and the Lumas are generally not referred to with gendered terms, but the Japanese text of her Super Smash Bros. for Wii U trophy contains the line "[Her] straightforward manner of speech gives the impression of an older lady from a working-class neighborhood." (「ざっくばらんな口調は下町のおばさんみたい。」)[1] In a staff interview published in a Japanese Super Mario Galaxy 2 guidebook, Yoshiaki Koizumi briefly referred to Lubba as "aunt-like" before quickly following up that he did not know Lubba's gender.[2] Starting with the Nintendo Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2, she is consistently referred to as female across all regions.
