"Battling the Broodals",[2] also known as "Broodals Battle",[3] is a boss theme in Super Mario Odyssey, where it plays when battling Topper, Hariet, Rango, or Spewart of the Broodals. It is a frantic theme played using synthesized instruments, and was composed by Naoto Kubo.

History[edit]

Super Mario Odyssey[edit]

Super Mario Odyssey marks the first appearance of "Battling the Broodals", along with two arrangements composed by Naoto Kubo. They are all included in the official Super Mario Odyssey Original Soundtrack album.

A short variation of the frenetic opening synth, titled "Dey Call Us da Broodals!" in the Nintendo Music app, can be heard when Mario and Cappy encounter the Broodals for the first time in the Cap Kingdom, playing as a flourish when the group says the eponymous line.

An orchestrated version of this theme that makes heavy use of brass and electric guitar plays in boss battles against Madame Broode, titled "Battling Madame Broode" in the Nintendo Music app. This arrangement is dynamic: while Broode's Chain Chomp is captured, Chain Chomp barking is added to the theme.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie[edit]

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, an arrangement of "Battling the Broodals" is incorporated into the track "Taking Care of the Kingdom Isn't Easy", which plays in the montage where Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi take care of the Mushroom Kingdom in Peach's absence.

Naming[edit]

"Dey Call Us da Broodals!" is written to match Topper's speech quirk, which represents a Brooklyn accent.
