Bingo! is an event that can occur in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Though it only happens on occasion,  the event occurs strictly while the player is in battle. The results of the event rely on luck and skill, and the results of the event can vary greatly. Depending on the luck and skill of the player, he or she can receive good effects, bad effects, or absolutely none at all.
A Bingo! is an in-battle event that can occur in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door after successful completion of multiple Action Commands, often (but not always) providing the player with a strong positive boost depending on their luck and skill.

Each time a player successfully executes an Action Command of an attack, a card will appear in the upper right corner of the battle screen. This card will show one of five icons upon it: Mushroom, Flower, Star, Shine Sprite, or Poison Mushroom. The next time an Action Command is done successfully, another card will appear. If the two symbols on the two cards do not match, they will simply disappear and the player will start anew with their next successful Action Command. However, if the two symbols do match, they will stay where they are. Once the player executes a third Action Command successfully, the two symbols will appear in the middle of the screen along with a third symbol. This setup is reminiscent of a slot machine. The first two icons on are still, while the third icon remains spinning at a very fast speed. The player must stop the icon with the A button. If the player can skillfully match the third icon up with the first two, a certain event will occur depending on which 3 icons were lined up.
Each time the player successfully executes an Action Command, a random icon will appear in the upper-right corner of the screen: a Mushroom, Flower, Star, Shine Sprite, or Poison Mushroom. The next time an Action Command is executed (which does not have to be consecutive), a second random icon appears. If the two icons do not match, they disappear and the process restarts. If the two icons do match, they remain there until the player completes a third Action Command. After the third successful move finishes, the two symbols will appear in the middle of the screen with a third symbol rapidly changing, scrolling vertically like a slot machine in a predictable order. The player must stop the third icon with gcn. If the third symbol doesn't match the other two, nothing happens and the entire process restarts. If the three icons match, then an event occurs based on which icon has been lined up:

If the player knows what to look for in the icons, it is fairly easy to stop it on the picture wanted. The eyes of the Flower are far apart, but the eyes of the Shine Sprite are much closer together. Additionally, the colours can be watched to aid timing; for example, the Flower has white petals, and the Poison Shroom is much darker than the other pictures, making it easy to avoid.
*Matching Mushrooms will fully restore the Heart Points of both Mario and his current partner.
*Matching Flowers will fully restore Mario's Flower Points.
*Matching Stars will fully restore Mario's Star Power.
*Matching Shine Sprites will do all three of the above, fully restoring all HP, FP, and Star Power. This icon appears to show up less commonly than the other icons.
*Matching Poison Mushrooms (the word BINGO! does not appear) will reduce Mario's HP, his partner's HP, his FP, and his Star Power by half. If Mario has 1 HP left or has the Double Pain badge equipped with 99 HP or less (since damage is capped at 99 per hit), then Mario will be KO'd instantly. If they have P-Down, D-Up the damage is still reduced.

Effects
Earning a Bingo! also affects the audience and Mario's ability to gain Star Power from them:
*If the three images are all Mushrooms, then the player's Health Points will be fully restored.
*A Mushroom, Flower, or Star Bingo! will fill up the audience by half its capacity (for example, if the capacity is 100, then 50 new members will show up). For the rest of the current turn and the following three turns, the Star Power gained from Action Commands and Stylish moves (but not Appealing) will be doubled.
*If the three images are all Flowers, then the player's Flower Points will be fully restored.
*A Shine Sprite Bingo! will fill the audience to capacity. For the rest of the current turn and the following three turns, the Star Power gained from Action Commands and Stylish moves (but not Appealing) will be tripled.
*If the three images are all Stars, then the player's Star Power will be fully restored.
*A Poison Mushroom Bingo! will cause everyone in the audience to leave. For the rest of the current turn and the following three turns, the Star Power gained from Action Commands and Stylish moves (but not Appealing) will be equaled zero.
*If the three images are all Shine Sprites, all of the player's HP, FP, and Star Power will be fully restored.
Earning a Bingo! does not affect the number of audience members that will be present in the next battle - if the audience is nearly empty, it will still be nearly empty at the start of the next battle even if a positive Bingo! was obtained.
*If the three images are all Poison Mushrooms, the player's HP, FP and Star Power will decrease by half of their current amount. Every Audience member leaves. Obviously, if the icon being matched is a Poison Mushroom, it is wise to deliberately fail the Bingo event.

Additionally, in all cases except the Poison Mushroom, the Audience will be filled; for the first three types, half the capacity of the Audience will be filled, and in the case of the Shine Sprite "Bingo!", the whole Audience will fill up. For the rest of the current turn and the following three turns, Action Commands and Stylish Moves (but not Appealing) will give much more Star Power than usual - double for regular matches and triple for a Shine Sprite one.
Moves used by Star Power do not contribute icons to the Bingo! set, even if their Action Commands are successful. A Bingo! cannot be built across multiple battles; any icons earned are lost when the battle ends. The Bingo! event does not occur if the third successful Action Command ends the battle.

In the fight with the Shadow Queen, she absorbs the souls of every member in the Audience. However, after this and a rather lengthy cutscene, a scripted event will occur in which the player's next three attacks with successful Action Commands automatically end in successfully completing a Shine Sprite Bingo, thus getting the Audience back. For this reason, it is recommended to use expensive moves in the first couple of turns; especially moves using a lot of Star Power, as they do not give the player a card. Finishing off with a move consuming a lot of FP is sensible, as the player's HP, FP and Star Power will be automatically refilled.

There are two events in specific battles where Mario automatically earns Shine Sprite icons for successful Action Commands and is guaranteed a successful Bingo!, even if the player attempts to fail matching the third icon.

Bingo! in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
The Bingo! demonstrated in the tutorial battle by Professor Frankly

A Bingo! is an in-battle event that can occur in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door after successful completion of multiple Action Commands, often (but not always) providing the player with a strong positive boost depending on their luck and skill.

The player must stop the third icon with A Button. If the third symbol doesn't match the other two, nothing happens and the entire process restarts. If the three icons match, then an event occurs based on which icon has been lined up:

 • Matching Mushrooms will fully restore the Heart Points of both Mario and his current partner.
 • Matching Flowers will fully restore Mario's Flower Points.
 • Matching Stars will fully restore Mario's Star Power.
 • Matching Shine Sprites will do all three of the above, fully restoring all HP, FP, and Star Power. This icon appears to show up less commonly than the other icons.
 • Matching Poison Mushrooms (the word BINGO! does not appear) will reduce Mario's HP, his partner's HP, his FP, and his Star Power by half. If Mario has 1 HP left or has the Double Pain badge equipped with 99 HP or less (since damage is capped at 99 per hit), then Mario will be KO'd instantly. If they have P-Down, D-Up the damage is still reduced.

Earning a Bingo! also affects the audience and Mario's ability to gain Star Power from them:[1]

 • A Mushroom, Flower, or Star Bingo! will fill up the audience by half its capacity (for example, if the capacity is 100, then 50 new members will show up). For the rest of the current turn and the following three turns, the Star Power gained from Action Commands and Stylish moves (but not Appealing) will be doubled.
 • A Shine Sprite Bingo! will fill the audience to capacity. For the rest of the current turn and the following three turns, the Star Power gained from Action Commands and Stylish moves (but not Appealing) will be tripled.
 • A Poison Mushroom Bingo! will cause everyone in the audience to leave. For the rest of the current turn and the following three turns, the Star Power gained from Action Commands and Stylish moves (but not Appealing) will be equaled zero.

Earning a Bingo! does not affect the number of audience members that will be present in the next battle - if the audience is nearly empty, it will still be nearly empty at the start of the next battle even if a positive Bingo! was obtained.

Moves used by Star Power do not contribute icons to the Bingo! set, even if their Action Commands are successful. A Bingo! cannot be built across multiple battles; any icons earned are lost when the battle ends. The Bingo! event does not occur if the third successful Action Command ends the battle.

Special cases

There are two events in specific battles where Mario automatically earns Shine Sprite icons for successful Action Commands and is guaranteed a successful Bingo!, even if the player attempts to fail matching the third icon.

 • The tutorial battle with Professor Frankly, where the player is taught about the audience.
 • The beginning of the final phase of the battle against the Shadow Queen. This occurs after a cutscene where the audience's souls are absorbed by the Shadow Queen, rendering the audience empty; earning the Bingo! completely refills it.
