They first appeared in ''[[Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins]]'', as bosses. [[The Three Little Pigheads]] where three pigs that poked fun at the story of the 3 little pigs. They then appeared in ''[[Paper Mario]]'' as the name of [[Li'l Oink]]s. These pigs are used to get certain items. They then appeared in ''[[Super Mario Sunshine]]'' as [[Poink]]s. These could be used to spray water further.

Pigs appear in the Super Mario franchise as animals that are typically anthropomorphic or capable of speech.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Doopliss turns the citizens of Twilight Town into Pigs with the ring of a bell. When Doopliss is defeated, everyone is turned back. The title of the chapter in which these events take place is called "For Pigs the Bell Tolls", which is a reference to the novel written by Ernest Hemingway called For Whom the Bell Tolls.
