Fires[1] (also known as fireballs,[2][3][4] firefoxes,[5] and foxfires[6]) are enemies that debuted in the 100m level of Donkey Kong. In most versions, they are depicted as a slightly larger variant of the Fireball enemy that appears in other levels.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong[edit]

Sprite of a Fire from Donkey Kong (Arcade) Blue Fire

Fires are encountered only in 100 m of Donkey Kong, including the Start level of the Game Boy version and the port of the arcade version in Donkey Kong 64. Fires are slightly larger than the Fireball enemies. Fires can climb ladders in only a single direction. By jumping over a Fire, Mario can earn points. Fires become blue if Mario is holding a hammer, which is the only way to defeat them. Only up to five Fires can appear onscreen at once in the arcade version, lowered to four in the Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System version.

Family BASIC[edit]

Fires are programmable sprites in the Family BASIC accessory to the Family Computer, as well as enemies in the Star Killer minigame of Family BASIC V3.

Super Mario Kodansha manga[edit]

In the Super Mario Kodansha manga, a floating Fire appears in Super Mario: Donkey Kong 2.

In chapter 2, it is seen with the other enemies building the Tower and attacking Mario and friends in chapter 2, until Monchee interveens. In chapter 3 one is seen helping the Kongs fight the Kremling Krew, until DK and Donkey Kong Snr. are knocked out, causing the Kong army to retreat after the defeat of their leaders.

NES Remix series[edit]

Fires appear in Donkey Kong-related challenges in NES Remix, NES Remix Pack, and Ultimate NES Remix.

Mario Kart World[edit]

Fires make a cameo appearance in Mario Kart World on a wall in DK Spaceport.

Fire with cute eyes

The Fire from the GB version of Donkey has a marshmallow-like body and cute eyes. But if you are careless and touch it, you will be burned to a crisp. It is difficult to jump over it, so use a hammer to knock it down.
