The Hammer is an inventory item that makes a handful of appearances throughout the Super Mario franchise. Resembling the hammers thrown by Hammer Bros, it is a tool that is used to break certain barricades on the world map, allowing Mario to move past it.
History
Super Mario series
Super Mario Bros. 3
Hammers first appear as an inventory item in Super Mario Bros. 3, typically earned after defeating a Hammer Brother on the world map. They are used to shatter boulders that block the player's path, revealing routes to Mushroom Houses, shortcuts, or mandatory paths to access a part of the map. A Hammer is usable in the upper right corner of Desert Land to open up an area that contains a Toad's House with a Frog Suit, and a Fire Bro battle containing the last Magic Whistle.
Super Mario Run
Hammers can be used in the Kingdom Builder of Super Mario Run, earned from completing a World for the first time in World Tour. They are used to clear away Thwomps; doing so will allow players to place a building on that particular spot.
Nintendo Adventure Books
Hammers appear as equipment items for Mario to carry in the Nintendo Adventure Books series. In Double Trouble, the hammer is one of four items that could be obtained by solving the maze at the end of chapter 17. If Mario has this hammer with him in the maze of mirrors at chapter 52, the reader can skip to chapter 36, allowing Mario to shatter the entire maze with a hammer swing, letting him skip the maze altogether and head straight to Iggy's laboratory.
In Monster Mix-Up, Mario can earn himself a big hammer from a chest after defeating two Hammer Brothers in chapter 15. Mario can use this hammer in chapter 55 when he, Toad and the Mushroom King find themselves situated in an underground room of Chomp-Munchers, with Mario thinking he needs the hammer to escape due to the pictures shown on the wall in chapter 9. If the reader continues to chapter 55, Mario decides to smash the roof so it would drop down on the Chomp-Munchers. When he does so, however, it falls down on Mario instead, resulting in a Game Over.

- Main article: Claw Hammer
A pixel Hammer can be found in the Super Mario Bros. 3 section of the Green Energy Plant. When squeezed, it is added to the collection as the life-sized, mundane-looking Claw Hammer Thing, which effect when used is similar to the inventory hammer in Super Mario Bros. 3. Once the Claw Hammer is used up in battle, the pixel Hammer can be found at its original location.
