The Shield (also known as a Barrier) from the Sonic the Hedgehog series is a defensive power-up appearing as an item in the Dream Events of the Mario & Sonic games. When used, a protective green bubble is formed around the player, which shields them from a single incoming item or attack before disappearing.

In the DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, the Shield appears in the Dream Race and Dream Long Jump events. It reappears in the DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games in the Ski Shooting event, where it can be used against the Egg Hammer's attacks in the final round, and in the Super Sonic Downhill event, where Shields are collected throughout the course, take effect immediately upon contact, and protect the player from obstacles. In the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Shield appears in the Dream Fencing event, and in the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, it appears in the Duel Event Duel Beach Volleyball.
