History of Toad

From the Super Mario Wiki, the Mario encyclopedia
Jump to navigationJump to search

Toad as an individual character first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2; he has mainly had a role of being a supporting character. He has rarely been the main character of a game, with the exceptions being the video game Wario's Woods and the minigame Do Re Mi Fa Q, but not including Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which stars a different Toad. Toad is playable in some of the spinoff games, where he is commonly paired with Toadette since her debut in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Super Mario franchise[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 2 / Super Mario Advance[edit]

The heroes in Super Mario Advance, depicted in order of run speed

In the prologue, Toad goes on a picnic with Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool.[1] As they head out, the four heroes soon discover a cave that leads to a strange world known as Subcon. They learn that the land and its titular inhabitants had been taken over by Wart and his army, the 8 bits and go on a journey to save the kingdom and its inhabitants. By the ending, the events were revealed to have all been a dream of Mario's.

Toad debuts as a playable character. He is the worst jumper in terms of gameplay, but he is very fast at picking vegetables or digging through soft sand. Toad is the fastest of the four characters and even runs faster while holding an object that would slow the other playable characters otherwise. Toad has the lowest jumps, but he still has the ability to do Power Squat Jumps.

Toad is depicted with red spots in his artwork, but his sprites are blue. This inconsistency is not in Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance, which also make his cap appear more yellowish.

Super Mario Bros. 3 / Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

In the backstory of Super Mario Bros. 3, Toad and the princess both wish luck to Mario and Luigi on their journey into the Mushroom World.[2] However, the associated cutscene in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 shows only the princess, with Toad being seen with the king of Grass Land instead when Larry breaks into the castle during a thunderstorm at night. When the king had been transformed, Toad writes a letter asking for help.[3]

Toad runs the Toad's Houses, where the player character can choose an item from one treasure box,[4] of which there are three in total.[5] Toad also runs Spade Panels, where players have to match scrolling panels of either a Mushroom, a Fire Flower, or a Starman for extra lives. Toad also runs the N-Mark Spade Panels, where players can play a matching card game for various items.

BS Super Mario USA[edit]

Toad returned in BS Super Mario USA with the playable cast of Super Mario Bros. 2. Toad and the other three characters were called back to Subcon by its King. The King informed Toad and the other three that Wart is attempting to take over Subcon again, and that they have also stolen the Golden Mario Statue.

In gameplay, Toad plays exactly the same as he did in Super Mario All-Stars. While the player must start as Mario, a timer would sometimes change a different character into play, including Toad. In the story, this is done by the Super Birdos with their Crystal Balls. Throughout the audio drama, Toad is generally his cheerful self but gets very concerned whenever Princess Peach becomes rageful whenever the Birdos taunt and bully her.

In episode 1, the King's Commander activates a device that allows Toad to use instant Charge Jumps without needing to crouch down. When Toad gets swapped with Peach, he excitedly asks Mario and Luigi if they saw his high jumps, noting he might be able to do a Wall Jump now too, but Mario and Luigi are both too worried about Peach's newest rampage to notice Toad, making him sad. After overhearing one of the Super Birdos' conversations, Toad is the first one of the heroes to learn that there is a secret tunnel that leads to Wart's palace but was unable to learn where exactly the entrance would be. At the end of the episode, when the Bonus Chance is about to end, Toad shows off to Luigi that he won so many coins at the casino.

In episode 2, Toad assists Peach and Mario with organizing the King's warehouse after a Big Phanto destroyed everything inside. Later, when the Quicksand gets inadvertently sped up, the King asks Luigi and Toad for a favor to reset its speed. Luigi attempts to set a trap near the Birdos' base, but the Birdos spot him and use the trap themselves to turn off the lights, making the level nearly completely black for the player. Luigi uses a second unit of the same trap to toggle the lights back on, and after some back and forth between the two camps, the trap that the Birdos have breaks so that the lights remain on. When the Birdos go to make the quicksand even faster, they realize the quicksand machine has gone missing. The heroes then reveal they stole the machine from the Birdos thanks to Toad sneaking over and grabbing it when it was dark and that the whole trap escapade was all part of the King's plan. Later, when Peach is about to become angry at the Birdos again, Toad escorts her to a different room as a prevention method, but Peach manages to escape anyway so that she may throw Giant Vegetables. During this episodes Bonus Chance, on two separate occasions, Toad is close to getting a 7 in all three columns, but he fails the first attempt and he times out on the second.

In episode 3, Toad takes on a mostly passive role. He gets bashful when the Subcon TV crew arrive to record the action and is excited when he gets lunch from them later on. For this Bonus Chance, Toad and Luigi get jealous at Mario getting hot mushroom tea from Princess Peach to warm him up, so the King has the Commander serve them their own blend of "Subcon Tea", and the Commander very reluctantly does so. Toad notes the tea looks gooey, but Luigi nervously tells Toad that they should drink it in one go to get it over with. After they gulp it down, they both exclaim that the tea was terrible, but they get the same restorative effects as Mario due to it being made from fresh vegetables.

In the final episode, Toad, along with Mario and Peach, notes Clawgrip as a new addition to the 8 bits. Mario goes to scout him out, but when too much time passes, Toad and Peach start to get worried. Mario then comes back but is acting very strangely when he says that Clawgrip is too strong and that they should all go home. Peach goes off to ask the King for advice, leaving Toad with Mario, now belly-laughing at Luigi who is currently the player character. Toad starts to get suspicious and asks Mario if he is feeling sick, which prompts the Green Birdo to swap Toad in as the player character. Once Toad comes back, he is informed that "Mario" was actually Clawgrip (who in this story has the ability to transform) and that the real Mario had been captured. Toad and Luigi try to brainstorm on where Mario could be, with Luigi suggesting that Mario might be kept in the secret tunnel to Wart's palace. Toad asks the King for advice, and after some swapping around, Toad also goes to ask Tryclyde (who betrayed the 8 bits in episode 2) for advice but is unable to find him at his new job at the King's factory. Later, Peach discovers how to find Wart and takes Toad and Luigi with her to see the King. The King strangely rejects all of Peach's proposals to combat Wart, but when Tryclyde appears to set the King on fire, it is revealed that this "King" was once again Clawgrip in disguise. The heroes find the real King in a nearby wardrobe, and they all make a renewed promise to take down Wart together. The series ends with Wart's defeat and the heroes all going back home.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Toad is the owner of each of the Toad Houses in New Super Mario Bros. 2.[6] Red Toad Houses have him throw three power-ups to three platforms. They are a Fire Flower, Super Leaf, and Mini Mushroom in most cases but in World 1 they are instead two Fire Flowers and a Super Mushroom. Mario or Luigi can collect any number of them, which further gives them the option to decide which one goes into the item storage. The Green Toad Houses have Toad distributing multiple 1-Up Mushrooms for the player character to collect by knocking them down with a special glove. Most Yellow Toad Houses have Toad throw out a treasure chest that puts a Gold Flower directly into Mario's or Luigi's item storage, but the one in World Star has Toad give them a Star in the same manner.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Red Toad House
Mario and Toad inside a Red Toad House in New Super Mario Bros. U

Toad runs the Toad Houses once more in New Super Mario Bros. U, with an added animation of him either jumping excitedly if they win whilst shaking his head in disappointment if they lose. Besides this, Toad appears if the player ends a level with the last two digits matching on the timer to give the player a power-up. In the second world, Nabbit steals a power-up from Toad, who appears out of his Toad House to inform the player of what had happened before introducing pipe cannons to help access more of the map. When Nabbit is finally caught, Toad rewards the player character with a P-Acorn.

In New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Yellow Toad and Blue Toad are generically renamed "Toad" and share the same character slot.

Artwork of Toad from Super Mario 3D World, demonstrating his prominent running speed (left), and Cat Toad (right)

Toad is a playable character in Super Mario 3D World and its port. He is depicted with blue spots to resemble his sprites in Super Mario Bros. 2, or even the Blue Toad character. Toad is first shown in the opening sequence, where he notices a tilted Clear Pipe in front of himself, Mario, Luigi, and Peach. When the Mario Bros. fix the pipe, the green Sprixie Princess emerges to inform them that the Sprixies are being captured, before Bowser arrives to capture the Sprixie Princess herself. The four characters enter the pipe and begin their journey.

Toad's abilities are similar as in Super Mario Bros. 2, with him being the fastest playable character, having the shortest jumps, and the fastest falling speed. In Small form, his cap is depicted blue with spots. As Fire Toad, he resembles Fire Yellow Toad, but his pants are white.

While Toad is not in Bowser's Fury, one of the kitten's colors is blue, matching Toad's Cat form, just as the other types of kittens are each colored corresponding to one of the other three player characters.

Super Mario Maker[edit]

In Super Mario Maker, Toad appears along with Princess Peach in the opening cutscene of 10 Mario Challenge and 100 Mario Challenge. He stands next to Peach as two Goombas come in to capture her. Like all characters in the menus and non final cutscenes of 10 Mario Challenge and 100 Mario Challenge, Toad is depicted using sprites from Super Mario Bros., specifically the sprites for Mushroom Retainers. Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS lacks 10 Mario Challenge but gains Super Mario Challenge, which has a similar opening cutscene to the 10 Mario Challenge and 100 Mario Challenge that therefore still features Toad in the same role.

Toad also appears as a Mystery Mushroom costume in Super Mario Maker. It is unlocked by either clearing the 100 Mario Challenge on the Easy setting and above or by scanning the Toad amiibo. Toad resembles his modern design, as opposed to any of his older sprites. When transformed into, Toad exclaims, "Here I go!" Rescuing a Toad while wearing the Toad outfit makes the Toad being rescued use unique dialogue referencing Captain Toad.[7] If Mario becomes Big Mario, Bull's-Eye Bills and red cannonballs become Toad.

Super Mario Run[edit]

Model of Toad from Super Mario Run.

Toad is an unlockable playable character in Super Mario Run. He is obtained by linking the game to the player's Nintendo Account, then accessing My Nintendo to redeem him. This costs zero Platinum Points, essentially serving as an incentive to link data. After version 1.1.0, this reward can be redeemed multiple times, meaning a player who deletes their user data can receive Toad again.

Much like in Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario 3D World, Toad is the fastest of the playable characters; however, his jumps are now on par with Mario's. Toad (as with all playable characters except Mario and Luigi) can only take one hit from an enemy or obstacle before being defeated. This has changed in version 3.4.0, when every character in the game is now able to access the Small form while starting out in their Super forms when starting a stage, with the exception of Mario and Luigi.

Toad substitutes for other characters' NPC roles if they are being played as. If either player uses Toadette in the Toad Rally mode, Toad takes her place as the referee. This also happens if one player is Toadette and the other player is Toad. If Peach or Daisy complete Bowser's Bob-ombing Run, Toad is there to be rescued rather than Peach.

Outside of these roles, Toad is a guide character in Super Mario Run. As the only Toad left in the kingdom after Bowser attacks, he instructs the player on how to use many of the features and elements of the game. He also appears in Remix 10 as a friend to be overtaken as part of that mode's tutorial. Toad is the shopkeeper for the Shop in the Kingdom Builder mode.[8]

A number of buildings and decorations are themed after Toad, including a topiary, a statue, a golden statue, and a Goal Pole. The 1st Anniversary Statue depicts Toad as well. The 8-bit Toad Statue depicts Toad as he appears in Super Mario Bros., using the Mushroom Retainer sprite. This retroactively states Toad to have appeared in Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Artwork of Super Mario Maker 2
Toad and the playable cast in their builder outfits in Super Mario Maker 2

Toad is one of the playable characters in Super Mario Maker 2, besides Toadette, Mario, and Luigi. He is depicted with blue spots, like in Super Mario 3D World, while some of his previous special forms such as Cat Toad also return. He was given unique sprites for Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and especially Super Mario World, where he does not appear at all. Toad's sprite in Super Mario Bros. differs from Super Mario Maker, having blue colors, being wider, and having a darker shade of skin.

Toad gains seven forms: Big Toad, Superball Toad, Raccoon Toad, Frog Toad, Cape Toad, Balloon Toad, and Builder Toad. In the Super Mario 3D World game style, his Fire form has a blue cap rather than the yellow one he has in that game itself.

Toad also has the role of being the job handler in Story Mode under the name Taskmaster, appearing in his usual red-spotted, blue-vested appearance and wearing a gray hard hat. As the Taskmaster, Toad provides Mario with requests in the form of levels that he can complete to earn coins. Toad also appears in two of the stickers that players can post in Course World, with the same appearance: one of them depicts him high-fiving Toadette, and another depicts the two holding hands together.

Two Toad-themed outfits can be unlocked for the player's Maker Mii: the Toad Cap and Toad Outfit, resembling Toad's mushroom cap and clothes, respectively. They are both unlocked by reaching a high score of 100 or more courses in Endless Challenge (Normal).

NES Open Tournament Golf[edit]

In NES Open Tournament Golf, Toad is a non-playable character and appears with a blue flag to inform the player whenever an O.B. occurs.

Super Mario Kart[edit]

Toad is a lightweight playable character in Super Mario Kart. His signature color is blue, matching his vest color. Toad can uniquely throw Poison Mushrooms, but only as a CPU.

Mario Kart 64[edit]

Toad is also playable in Mario Kart 64. His personal course is Toad's Turnpike. Toad is retained as a lightweight character, now sharing the classification with Peach and Yoshi.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit[edit]

Toad reappears in Mario Kart: Super Circuit as one of the two lightest and fastest characters, besides Peach. As usual, his greatest attribute is acceleration, which contributes to his high speed statistic. He ties with Peach for having the best acceleration in the game, but also ties with her for being the lightest racer in the game.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]

Toad is partnered with Toadette for the first time in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, in addition to his first and only appearance in the Mario Kart series as an unlockable character. He is unlocked by completing the Special Cup on 100cc.[9] He and Toadette share the Golden Mushroom as a special item. Toad's personal kart is the Toad Kart. Artwork of Toad from Super Mario Sunshine is visible on a billboard at Peach Beach, and several banners of him are throughout the beginning sector of Yoshi Circuit.

Mario Kart Arcade GP[edit]

Toad is a playable character of the light weight class in Mario Kart Arcade GP. His special items are the Miracle Mushroom, Poison Mushroom, Mushroom Hammer, and Mushroom Powder.

Mario Kart DS[edit]

Toad returns as a lightweight playable character in Mario Kart DS. His three personal karts are the Standard TD, the Mushmellow, and the 4-Wheel Cradle. Toad is the character who has to race Goomboss in Missions mode.[10]

Mario Kart Arcade GP 2[edit]

Toad appears in Mario Kart Arcade GP 2. Toad is featured as one of the three easy control racers (the other two characters under this classification are Ms. PAC-MAN and Mametchi). The special items featured for Toad in this game are the same as the ones he had in the original Mario Kart Arcade GP title.

While he does not have his own racecourse in the game, Toad does receive a few notable cameos within several other courses. In the course Yoshi Park 1, large paper cutout figures of Toad (done in the art style of the Yoshi series) can be spotted throughout the course including in the section depicting cakes and sweets where figures of Toad and Yoshi can be seen to be baking cakes together. In the course Yoshi Park 2, figures of Toad along with Toadette and Toadsworth can be seen in the beginning part of the Trick House area.

Mario Kart Wii[edit]

Toad is a playable character in Mario Kart Wii. He is a small-sized driver. Toad's personal course is Toad's Factory, of which he is also the staff ghost for. Toad is given a good acceleration and drift bonus, which makes vehicles like the Cheep Charger and Bullet Bike accelerate and drift better than normal. Toad uses the same vehicles as the other small characters, but they are available in different colors (Toad's vehicles are either blue, red or yellow). Toad is tied with Peach and Waluigi for having the best drift and acceleration stats in their respective size classes in the game.

Mario Kart 7[edit]

Toad returns again in Mario Kart 7. He is a starter playable character who is Feather-weight and sports high acceleration. Toad has his own personal course, Toad Circuit.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

Artwork of Toad for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass

Toad returns in Mario Kart 8 once again as a default lightweight character, only this time as one of the heavier lightweights. This means that his acceleration, handling, and traction stats are reduced to increase his speed and weight stats. He shares this trait with Koopa Troopa, Shy Guy, Toadette, Lakitu, Larry, Wendy, and Isabelle.

Toad owns two racecourses, which are the new Toad Harbor and returning N64 Toad's Turnpike (the latter being his staff ghost course).

Like in the previous games, Toad uses blue as his main color scheme. This color is used for every color-changing vehicle part and glider that Toad uses, such as the Circuit Special, Super Glider, and Pipe Frame. His secondary color is red, which is used for the Sneeker and Sport Bike. A CPU-controlled Toad sometimes uses the Sneeker.

Toad also appears on posters for the sponsors Galaxy Air and the 1-Up Mushroom Car Insurance Group.

In the port, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Toad now only shares stats stats with Shy Guy and Larry, and Toad is the heaviest of all the five groups of lightweights. Toad has higher top speed and weight compared to the other lightweights, whilst having the lowest acceleration and traction of them.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

Toad (Party Time) in Mario Kart Tour
Toad (Party Time) racing on Toad Circuit

Toad appears in Mario Kart Tour as one of the starting playable characters, with the other two potential starters being Toadette and Peachette. He appears as a Super driver and has the Triple Mushrooms as his special skill. Toad is the sole playable character in the tutorial and when the in-game update data is being downloaded. His Mii costume from Mario Kart 8 was added in the first wave of Mii costumes in the 2022 Mii Tour.

A variant of Toad, called Toad (Party Time), was added in the 2020 New Year's Tour. He wears a vest similar to his regular one but with long sleeves and more sparkly, he also wears a bow tie and carries around a mask of Mario's nose and mustache, which he puts on his face during some jump boosts. He is a High-End driver and has the Mushroom Cannon as his special skill. Toad (Party Time) became available in regular tour pipes starting with the Battle Tour.

Another variant, Builder Toad, was added in the 2020 Trick Tour, alongside Builder Mario. He uses his design from Super Mario Maker 2, including having blue spots rather than red, which is reflected in his emblem. He is a High-End driver and has the Bob-omb Cannon as his special skill.

Another variant, Cat Toad, was added in the 2021 Cat Tour, alongside Cat Peach. He uses his design from Super Mario 3D World, including his blue coloration; however, his emblem still has red spots, unlike with Builder Toad. Cat Toad is a High-End driver and has the Super Bell as his special skill.

Another variant, Penguin Toad, was introduced in the Snow Tour. He is a High-End driver and has the Dash Ring special skill. He uses the design of Yellow Toad's Penguin form from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but retains Toad's red emblem.

Another variant, Toad (Astronaut), was introduced in the 2023 Space Tour. He is a High-End driver and has the Boomerang Flower as his special skill. He uses the design of the spectator Toads from Mario Kart 8's Rainbow Road, including blue spots instead of red, which is reflected in his emblem like with Builder Toad.

Another variant, Toad (Tourist), was added in the Spring Tour. He wears a backpack, yellow sunglasses, and a hat with "Toad" written on it, and he carries a camera. He is a High-End driver and has the Giant Banana as his special skill.

Additionally, Toad (Pit Crew) and his six further color variants, as well as Captain Toad, are playable drivers who are considered to be variants of Toad.

Mario Kart World[edit]

Toad returns in Mario Kart World. Like other characters in the game, his design has been slightly tweaked. His face is chubbier, and the red circles on his mushroom cap now have small indents surrounding them rather than being simple red circles. Toad is lightweight, and shares his stats with Shy Guy and Stingby,[11] although the in-game stats screen rounds statistics such that they also match Toadette, Nabbit, Koopa Troopa, Lakitu and Cheep Cheep.

While Toad has no new racecourse, Toad's Factory from Mario Kart Wii returns. Three brands based on Toad appear in this game: "The Adventures of Toad", "Toad Manufactoring", and "Toad's Wharf." Faraway Oasis also features many Toad sponsors, and is also the setting of the billboard for "The Adventures of Toad." Along with his default outfit, Toad has a total of five outfits, all of which match Toadette's outfits.

This is the first game where Toad is voiced by Laila Berzins.

Mario Discovery Series[edit]

Mario is Missing![edit]

Toad sprite from Mario is Missing! CD-ROM Deluxe

Toad may appear as a Curator in Mario is Missing! CD-ROM Deluxe, replacing the human ones from the MS-DOS release. Luigi can either ask questions to Toad or return the artifact, but in the latter case, Toad provides two questions to Luigi to prove that the item he is holding is authentic. If Luigi answers correctly, he receives money from Toad, who gives it as a token of appreciation.

Mario's Tennis[edit]

Toad is a playable character in Mario's Tennis. He plays similarly to Yoshi, being fast with a small racket area and trying to play close to the net. When played against, Toad's background features various small houses among trees. A pair of Para-Beetles occasionally flies by.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Toad is an adviser to the Chancellor of Mushroom Kingdom. He appears throughout the game to offer Mario tutorials on how to accomplish certain tasks.

Prior to the events of the game, he was sent by the Chancellor to pick up Princess Peach, who was visiting Mario at his house. However, when Toad arrives, no one is to be found. Soon, an object appears in the sky and crashes into Mario's house. The object is none other than Mario, who was just ejected from Bowser's Keep by the giant sword, Exor. Toad asks Mario to return to the castle to rescue the Princess. However, when Mario arrives, Exor destroys the bridge to the castle, preventing any access to the keep.

As such, Mario returns to his pad and tells Toad the bad news. Toad decides the pair will have to journey to Mushroom Kingdom to inform the Chancellor about Bowser's Keep and Princess Toadstool. As they are leaving, Toad accidentally bumps into Mario and does one HP worth of damage. Toad quickly apologizes and then teaches Mario about items and Timed Hits. Additionally, Toad gives Mario four Mushrooms before they journey into the Goomba-infested Mushroom Way. As soon as Toad enters Mushroom Way, he is captured by a group of Goombas. However, Mario promptly rescues him and he quickly rewards Mario with some Honey Syrup. However, when Toad enters the next area of the passageway, he is quickly kidnapped by a Paratroopa. Once again, Mario saves Toad and, once again, Mario is rewarded (this time, he gets a Flower Tab). Right before the exit to Mushroom Kingdom, Toad is captured by the Hammer Bros blocking the way. Ultimately, Mario defeats the Hammer Bros., frees Toad, and accompanies Toad to Mushroom Kingdom.

Upon reaching the Mushroom Castle, Toad leads Mario to the room where the Chancellor and the other five mushroom retainers were holding a meeting. Upon talking to the Chancellor, Mario provides an animated speech of how the Princess was kidnapped using various impersonations of the characters he met during the kidnapping. Toad also aids Mario in the speech by playing along after Mario introduces the part of the tale where Toad comes in. After the Chancellor gives instructions to Mario of his next steps in his journey, Toad is left to remain at the castle and await Mario's return.

Later, during the invasion of Mushroom Kingdom by Claymorton and the Shymores, Toad hides, very frightened, in Peach's Room in the castle.

When Mario is taking a nap at the Rose Town inn, Toad visits him to deliver a Flower Tab. If Mario chooses to sleep with the Dream Cushion at the Inn in Nimbus Land, he would sometimes dream of Toad revealing himself to be a Greaper (described as just "a monster"). Mario initially becomes frightened of Toad when he comes to visit, but the fear is gone once Toad gives him a Red Essence.

Later, in the Factory, Toad, having through unknown means traveled to and through Bowser's Keep and the rest of the Factory, appears to support Mario and sell him useful items, giving him two Rock Candies for free the first time he shops. Additionally, despite being at the Factory, the player can return to Mushroom Kingdom and still find him in the castle's throne room with the Chancellor.

In the Nintendo Switch remake Toad is now the only Toad in the game to wear a blue vest; the others that did in the original now wear red. The remake also adds a Gauge Move called Toad Assist, in which Toad summons a treasure chest that produces a random item for the player. Its description reads, "Toad comes running to support you. Who knows what you might get?"

Satella-Q[edit]

Toad
The title screen of Satella-Q featuring Toad

Toad is the starring and primary character of Satella-Q, a series of quiz game events for the Satellaview (an add-on for the Super Famicom). Toad's role in these game events is to guide the players through a series of quizzes and minigames throughout the Satella-Q episodes. Occasionally, the players interact with him through the events of the minigames such as moving him around certain areas and stages. Toad also cheers on the player at various points of the game (especially whenever the player claims victory over a certain minigame). The game also features several minigames which often make references to Toad and his own character such as the featuring of titles such as "Do Re Mi Fa Q", whenever Toad is seen performing in a musical concert in one of the minigames.

Mario Teaches Typing[edit]

Toad makes a small appearance on the title screen in Mario Teaches Typing, where the artwork that depicted him, Luigi, and Peach was taken from the group artwork of the three from Super Mario Bros. 3.

Game & Watch Gallery series[edit]

Throughout the Game & Watch Gallery series, Toad has been featured in nearly all of the installments. In the Modern versions of most of the games, he is a non-playable character. He usually cries when something bad happens to him that causes the player to get a miss.

In Game & Watch Gallery, Toad appears in the Modern versions of two games. In Manhole, Toad is one of the pedestrians that Yoshi must prevent from falling into the water. In Fire, Toad is one of the characters that the Mario Bros. must rescue from Princess Peach's burning castle.

In Game & Watch Gallery 2, Toad appears in the Modern versions of two games. In Parachute, Toad is one of the characters that Mario must catch. Toad opens his parachute right after jumping from the flying ship. In Helmet, at 500 and 1,000 points, Toad appears at the right door's entrance to invite the player to the next area.

Turtle Bridge (Modern) from Game & Watch Gallery 3
Toad in the Modern version of Turtle Bridge

In Game & Watch Gallery 3, Toad is the protagonist of his own game, Turtle Bridge (which is based on the original Turtle Bridge game from the original Game & Watch). This game involves Toad delivering packages from Mario to Princess Peach (who both stand on opposite sides of a castle) while crossing a bridge full of Goonies. The game is played by having Toad deliver the various items (from left to right) while jumping on the various Goonies that appear in the sky, and he must also avoid falling while in the air.

In Game & Watch Gallery 4, Toad appears in the Modern vers
