Ōgon no Mario Zō is a collectible in BS Super Mario USA. It is a golden statue of Mario that, according to the game's plot, was created as a symbol of peace after Mario and his friends defeated Wart in Super Mario Bros. 2. However, it was stolen and hidden by Mouser as part of the 8 bits' second attempt to take over Subcon. In every episode, there are three Ōgon no Mario Zō hidden in each level, plus one obtainable from the end-of-the-world boss. Finding an Ōgon no Mario Zō gives the player an extra life, fills the Life Meter, and adds 50,000 points to their score. Physical toy statues were also made and given to the first player of each episode's point ranking.[1]
Prior to its appearance in BS Super Mario USA, the statue was used as part of Nintendo store displays in Japan, and at Shoshinkai 1994, it was used as a 3D render in the boot sequence of the Virtual Boy units used to demonstrate the Virtual Boy's stereoscopic 3D feature.[2]
Ten of the statues are on display at the entrance to Super Family Restaurant in the Nintendo Museum.[3]
